28 Orchid Wedding Centerpieces [Photos]

Orchid wedding centerpieces add romance and beauty to any wedding celebration. Ask any gardener and they will tell you that it takes patience (and love) to grow an orchid.

Orchids are renowned for their beauty, but we also love them for their perseverance. Not only can these stunning flowers live up to 100 years, but they are also one of the oldest blooms in existence. Talk about longevity.

No doubt about it, we cannot think of a more perfect flower to grace a wedding celebration. Orchids come in a variety of shapes and colors, making them an ideal choice — regardless of the theme or style of your celebration.

Whether you are looking for an orchid wedding that’s simple and elegant or lavish and luxurious, the right designer and florist can transform your wedding venue into a dreamscape of love and beauty.

These 28 orchid wedding centerpieces are only a small sample of the world of wedding inspiration awaiting you on PartySlate. Check out our larger idea gallery of wedding centerpieces for even more inspiring ideas and suggestions.

12 Small Wedding Ideas [That Make a Big Impact]

Small, intimate weddings are more popular than ever. For many couples, an intimate wedding means more quality time spent with friends and family — and most importantly, each other. Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean a quick trip to the courtroom and few streamers in the backyard. These days, small wedding ideas are big on style.

So how do you make a small wedding feel special? Good question.

Planning a small, intimate wedding — much like any large-scale celebration — starts with a few good ideas and a talented team of event professionals. With a smaller guest list, a top-notch wedding caterer can go above and beyond to create super-customized menus and creative wine pairings. Floral and décor teams can transform a hotel rooftop, a garden patio, or even a backyard (see our feature on Small Backyard Weddings) into a romantic, wow-worthy setting. Finally, an expert wedding planner can turn any idea into a dream celebration.

Meaningful and fun ideas for a small wedding include everything from focusing on personalized details to creating unique and interactive experiences. Whether you opt to exchange vows on a yacht (with a moving backdrop of your choosing) or go for a hot air balloon ride above the clouds, there are plenty of ways you can make your intimate wedding an unforgettable affair.

Read on to discover 12 small wedding ideas that make a big impact. From beautiful tablescapes and sumptuous dinners to unique venues and show-stopping entertainment, we know all the ways to make your wedding dreams come true.

1. Opt for an Unusual Venue

Think outside the box (or the venue) and look for a unique space that captures the spirit of your celebration. When it comes to selecting the right venue, a small guest list allows for more flexibility. Head to a secluded spot in nature, or have your intimate wedding on-the-go with a luxurious yacht. PartySlate can help you narrow down your search with our “Find a Venue” directory. Search through restaurants, ballrooms, museums, and more. When it comes to finding the perfect venue, the sky’s the limit.

6. Give Guests the Individual Treatment With These Small Wedding Ideas

With a smaller guest list, there’s no need to “work the room.” You can linger over a cup of coffee with your best friend or take a few extra turns on the dance floor with a parent. A more intimate guest list also offers a greater opportunity to make each guest feel special. Add floral décor to each place setting; or dazzle guests with individual wedding cakes. A little extra love goes a long way in making your family and friends feel cherished.

Meaningful and fun ideas for a small wedding include everything from focusing on personalized details to creating unique and interactive experiences.”

7. Focus on the Details With These Small Wedding Ideas

Without a doubt, small weddings can still be big on details. Regardless of the size of your wedding ceremony and reception, curate each individual element for a wow-worthy experience. Many overlooked details — such as dinner menus and ceremony seating — can set the tone of your wedding and dramatically contribute to the overall aesthetic. Use PartySlate’s Idea Slates to save pictures of your favorite small wedding ideas and elements (and later share your slates with your wedding event planner).

8. Make it a Meal to Remember

You see, nothing brings people together like an intimate dining experience. Gather your guests around the table for a delicious meal (followed by dessert, of course). Many couples choose to forgo some of the more traditional large-scale wedding experiences, such as dancing or a pre-dinner cocktail hour. This leaves more time for a relaxed sit-down dinner and plenty of intimate conversation. PartySlate can connect you with top wedding caterers in your city. You can also find inspiration for your wedding menu by browsing through thousands of photos of food and drink ideas.

There are no set rules when it comes to planning your small wedding. Remember: The goal is to create a meaningful (and fun) celebration for you and partner.

11. Make Time For Meaningful Moments With These Small Wedding Ideas

There’s no doubt about it: Large-scale weddings often require a rigid schedule of meticulously-planned moments. In between the traditional activities — first dance, champagne toasts, reception dinner — the couple often goes from table to table to greet and thank their guests. Small weddings allow for more flexibility and a relaxed schedule. Therefore, intimate weddings are the perfect opportunity to create meaningful moments — whether they are traditional or more out-of-the-box wedding experiences.

Whether you opt to exchange vows on a yacht (with the entire city as your backdrop) or go for a hot air balloon ride above the clouds, there’s plenty of ways you can make your intimate wedding an unforgettable affair. “

12. Spend Extra Time With Your Photographer

Don’t forget: Hire a talented wedding photographer to capture the heartfelt moments of your intimate wedding ceremony and reception. A more flexible time schedule means that you can spend extra time with your photographer. Head out and visit some of your favorite spots in the city; or stop for a quick picnic in the park. Just make sure to invite your photographer along so you can cherish your photos for years to come.

This Fairytale Wedding Twisted Tradition with Cannabis-Studded Florals, Custom Velvet Sneakers, & Vodka That Transformed Into Gin

Once Upon a Time in Las Vegas

Every love story has a beginning. For Sarah and Brent, it began almost 13 years ago in Las Vegas — a fantastical city built on glamour and imagination. It didn’t take long for the two to develop a strong connection. Sarah, a successful Las Vegas business woman known as “the Sorceress,” possessed a unique ability to help friends find insight into their true beings. As the owner of Coterie, the clothing boutique at the center of Zappos CEO Tony Hsieh’s “Downtown Project,” she knew Brent was destined for big things. She gave Brent the initial seed money to start his career as a cannabis entrepreneur. With the help of his brother Barry, Brent formed Tradecraft Farms, a family-owned cultivator and purveyor of cannabis and cannabis products.

For the next 12 years, Brent’s cannabis-based business continued to grow throughout Oklahoma, Los Angeles, and Vista, California — with products sold nationwide via retailers. At the same time, the two fell deeper and deeper in love. In addition to having two beautiful children with Sarah (and another on the way), Brent has long been a father to Sarah’s son from her first marriage. While pregnant with Ivy, the couple decided it was finally time to tie the knot. Having already once walked down the aisle, Sarah knew that she wanted a wedding that portrayed the magic of her life with Brent. With a focus on throwing a great party (with a wedding ceremony thrown into the mix), they began to plan their wedding day.

A Vision is Born

From the beginning, Sarah knew that she wanted to host her wedding at The Houdini Estate in Laurel Canyon — she had visited the venue early in her pregnancy with Ivy and booked it on the spot. She envisioned something “magical and unexpected.” Eschewing traditional summer-wedding color palettes and décor, Sarah imagined a scene that was both theatrical and sumptuous. With a vision forming in her mind, she knew it was time to find her wedding planner.

Bespoke wedding planner David Pressman of David Pressman Events received a message on his website from Sarah. She explained how she hoped “to create an evening of magic under a full moon” and make her guests “feel that they stepped into another realm.” The planner and bride-to-be met, and after four hours of talking and developing a close bond, Sarah knew that David could transform her dreams into reality.

By the time they met with Wanda Wen of Soolip to decide on Save-the-Dates, Sarah and David had decided on the “look” of the celebration. As David shares, that meant “a deep, moody color palette with unexpected floral specimens.” Dried flowers and cornucopias of fresh fruits would go hand-in-hand with natural mosses, hanging vines, and green amaranthus.

The Not-So-Secret Ingredient

They also knew that the wedding celebration would pay homage to the thriving cannabis market across California — with floral designs and consumable products grown at Tradecraft Farms. To safely incorporate cannabis into the celebration, David understood that communication with guests had to start from the very beginning. For Sarah and Brent, that began with their save-the-date cards and invitation suites.

Beige envelopes made from Kraft paper evoked the dime bags of the 70s, while maple leaves gave a subtle nod to cannabis leaves. Other beautiful details included custom wax seals (with an elegant horse imprint) and velvet-wrapped metal cards — a foreshadowing of the animal motifs and velvet Curry-colored linen with gold-silk Shantung napkins by La Tavola Fine Linen that would be featured throughout the wedding reception.

Perfectly-Hued Cannabis Florals

While most people think of Cannabis as a product, it is also a lavish plant — beautiful in its own right. David found subtle ways to incorporate cannabis into the wedding décor, starting with bouquets and boutonnieres that featured a mix of cannabis flowers and buds in a hue grown specifically for the celebration. Sarah chose a particular strain to produce the desired color palette. Sarah also showed David how to trim the flowers and remove the stalks from each plant. A few days before the wedding, David met with the grower to gather fresh cannabis plants from Tradecraft Farms and deliver them straight to the florist — eschewing the need for any refrigeration that would affect the fragrance.

In addition to the beautiful floral arrangements featured throughout the ceremony and dinner reception, Owner of Lilla Bello Toby Kassoy also designed bouquet and boutonnieres that fused cannabis with traditional blooms. The toss bouquet showcased dried cannabis and dried roses, creating a combination of soft and moody tones. Brent’s boutonniere — switched mid-day for freshness — boasted black Scabiosa buds, seeded eucalyptus, and rubicon spray rose bud.

A Kid-Friendly Celebration

When it came to integrating consumable cannabis products into the celebration, David used the same degree of sensitivity that he uses for tackling any wedding matter. “A lack of clear, unambiguous communication with guests,” he says, “can turn any wedding celebration into a disaster — with or without cannabis products.” From the beginning, Sarah and David decided to “kid-proof” the celebration by not mixing cannabis with any other food items. David shares, “That meant cake or anything that might catch the eye of a child who would have no reason not to eat something that looked tasty.”

A Magical Concoction

To create the cocktail menu, David reached out to CEO and Chief Liquidizer Claudine Kielson of Scarlette Bartending, home to Laboratory by Scarlette. In the end, Sarah chose to feature a specialty “Apple Bong Sour” cocktail, as well as a full-spectrum of CBD-infused tinctures. Guests also had the option of indulging in THC elixirs, crafted from Tradecraft Farm products — as well as visiting an experiential station that transformed vodka into gin with the help of Japanese coffee siphons. Cannabis herbs and a CBD-infused “Butterfly Pea Pod Tea Tincture” were available upon request.

Thoughtful Planning & an Imaginative Dining Experience

As guests arrived at The Houdini Estate for a pre-ceremony cocktail hour, with tray-passed hors d’oeuvres and custom cocktails, Fifth Avenue Gospel Choir performed against a backdrop of luxuriant summer foliage. Staff made sure that no one was given an infused drink without their knowledge and that all finished cocktail glasses were immediately cleared. This vigilance continued with the post-ceremony cocktail hour and sit-down dinner crafted by Jennifer Naylor Catering and Special Events and inspired by the fantastical dining scene in “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”

The Clock Strikes Midnight

As soon as dinner ended, guests received a take-away gift of 2oz infusion gift bottles called “The Last Word” — with custom-designed labels signed by Sarah and Brent. Guests were then whisked away in Uber SUVs to Kimpton La Peer Hotel for a rooftop dance party. Midnight approached, and the fairytale continued with an adult-only afterparty in the Courtyard Bar until 2AM, where guests had the option of enjoying stick.e.vape pens in a designated vape-friendly smoking area.

A Planner With a Few Surprises

Of course, as David reminds us, “Whether it’s a cannabis wedding or not, it’s the personalized details and thoughtful planning that distinguish a bespoke celebration.” For David, that meant going the extra mile from the moment that he began planning the wedding. David’s intuition and knack for understanding his clients means he was able to find the perfect event partners for Sarah and Brent on the first try.

Knowing that a motif of horses and snakes would be present throughout the celebration, David began collecting on-theme napkin rings — then secretly ordered uniform rings from China as a surprise for Sarah. Additionally, he surprised Sarah by having the Fifth Avenue Gospel Choir learn a beloved song for her recessional. Other special details included finding the perfect pair of new Varvatos suede boots from David’s own closet and having custom-velvet sneakers with embroidered monograms designed for Brent and his two brothers. As David confides, “Now, more than ever, it’s important to have fun with people.”

Sarah wears a beautiful Magnolia gown by Galia Lahav, shoes by Christian Loubtoutin, along with “The Pale Empress” — a double crown with a matching “Gold Birdcage” veil by Viktoria Novak.

Material from Sarah’s customized gown was transformed into a chic dress for daughter Ivy — while sons Jack and Noah wore whimsical floral-print suits.

All three brothers sport tuxedos from the John Varvatos Collection, while Brent dons a stylish bowtie from Turnbull & Asser in London.

Prior to the ceremony, Sarah enjoys a few moments with officiant and dear friend Charles Ressler, along with her bridesmaids who are artfully decked out in Galia Lahav and Ralph Lauren.

5 Couples With Postponed Weddings Get Virtual Surprise from Their Wedding Band

For couples forced to postpone their wedding due to COVID-19, it is a time of uncertainty and disappointment. Having worked closely so many couples, Ken Arlen of Arlen Music Productions knew his clients were watching their meticulous plans disintegrate with heavy hearts. He faced many tough conversations with couples and their families as dates were postponed and then postponed again — with weddings now being pushed back to as far this time next year.

“When we meet with people, we really bond and get to know each other,” Ken shares, as couples meet with their band for detailed planning sessions many months before the actual wedding date. “It’s an intimate thing to plan the soundtrack for special moments,” he tells us. “To have that connection, and then something so crazy happens — you can’t help but want to honor it in some way. Music is a powerful thing.”

Wanting to alleviate some of the heartbreak facing couples, Arlen Music Productions and musicians from their various bands began performing online musical tributes for their clients. Each video was posted on the day that the wedding was supposed to occur — both to honor that date and let the couple know that their band was thinking of them. In one dedication, Lloyd Snyder of Evolution Orchestra creates a special version of “Fields of Gold” by Sting. In another video, Heidie Malnassy of Velocity sends her love to all of Arlen Music Productions’ clients with a moving tribute that “has first dance written all over it.”

For Arlen Music Productions, it’s about spreading the love and easing some of the heartache that comes with watching your wedding date come and go. Knowing the immense disappointment that couples are experiencing, Ken hopes to shine a light in this “uncertain darkness.” Here are five heartwarming performances from five incredible bands. Celebrations may be postponed, but love — and beautiful music — will get us through this trying time. And when weddings are back in full swing, we plan to have our dance moves ready.

Ria and Trent’s wedding may be postponed until November, but they can enjoy a sneak peak of music for their first dance. Sonya Major of the band Indigo performs “Love You for a Long Time” by Maggie Rogers.

While Jennifer and Rick await their new wedding date, they can still listen to music from what will be their first dance. David Sherman from Front of House performs “This Is It” by Scotty McCreery.

Evolution Orchestra cannot wait to celebrate with Carrie and Greg on their wedding day. In the meantime, Lloyd Snyder performs “Fields of Gold” by Sting.

Carly and Jeff saw that Arlen Music Productions had been posting online musical tributes, so they reached out to Entourage bandleader Leslie Hunt for a rendition of their first-dance song. Their original wedding date of May 9th arrived, and the couple lovingly danced to “Roll with Me” by Davie, as performed by Leslie Hunt & Jerome Matthews Jr.

In honor of all the Arlen Music Production couples who have had to postpone their wedding, Heidie Malnassy of Velocity performs “Golden Hour” by Kacey Musgraves.

COVID-19 Canceled the Wedding of This “Warrior in Scrubs” — Until David Tutera & PartySlate Stepped In

Couples all over the country — and the world — are asking themselves tough questions about their impending weddings. Should we postpone? Should we marry now and celebrate later? Should we host a more intimate wedding celebration now? And on and on. The options and combinations are endless, from couples booking multiple future dates well into 2022 (their backup plans have backup plans) to couples saying “I do” in hastily-arranged, but heartfelt, affairs.

Andrea and Ethan were facing the same set of agonizing choices with their long-planned wedding date of June 27, 2020 rapidly approaching. The couple met in October of 2014 and became engaged four years later in 2018, so to say they had been eagerly anticipating their wedding day is an understatement. In addition to the couple’s wedding considerations, Andrea — like millions of frontline workers across the US — harbored an additional concern about having her wedding: potentially endangering her loved ones’ health. As a Connecticut physician’s assistant, she has devoted her every waking moment in recent months to helping others and to being by her patients’ sides when their families are unable.

Andrea’s mother, Wanda, decided to take action on behalf of her daughter and penned a letter to celebrity event planner and entertaining expert, David Tutera, asking for help. Wanda shared that Andrea “gets up every morning at 4:30…and does not return home until after 7:30 pm” from treating COVID-19 patients, calling her daughter “a warrior in scrubs.” Wanda wrote, “My daughter’s spirit is broken — not because she is now postponing her wedding, but because her wedding seems trivial compared to what is happening around her.” She describes Andrea’s compassion and shares that her daughter treats her patients and their families with dignity and grace, “especially in these most desperate times.”

Touched by this heartfelt message from a loving mother, Tutera decided to surprise Andrea and her groom-to-be, Ethan, with their dream wedding. From planning and execution to providing all of the elements the couple needed, Tutera and his team at David Tutera Planning and Design partnered with event inspiration and planning resource, PartySlate — as well as a team of amazing wedding vendors — to ensure that this special couple got the wedding ceremony of their dreams on the exact date of their original wedding: June 27, 2020.

In virtual planning sessions, the grateful couple met with Tutera’s team and members of PartySlate to refine their wedding vision utilizing an inspirational Idea Slate — PartySlate’s digital vision board tool that allows event hosts to save and organize ideas as well as link back to the full event albums and the event professionals who worked on those celebrations. Andrea and Ethan’s wedding design took shape with hues of peach and cream with touches of rich navy blue, a plan for a riot of texture and color to fill Andrea and Ethan’s backyard. Planning sessions included non-traditional — very of-these-times — discussions about backyard Wi-Fi, cameras, and angles for live streaming.

In one planning session, Ethan shared, “For our original wedding, we didn’t have anyone planning; Andrea did it all. Perhaps the biggest challenge for her will be giving up that control.” Andrea laughed and added, “I work in healthcare, so I’m very Type A, so it’s very weird for me to be hands-off.” Tutera reassured her by affirming the strength of his team and the clarity of their plan in concert with PartySlate.

When discussing potential rain plans Tutera suggested fun peach and ivory umbrellas and chic, color-coordinated rain boots, saying that the backup plan announces, “This bride has been on the front lines and has been ready for anything that comes her way, and she’s not going to let a little rain stop her from marrying the person she loves.” Ultimately, the wedding became a tented celebration, protecting the couple and their family from the elements as well as adding a chic touch.

Bride Andrea expressed, “My bachelorette party was postponed and my wedding was postponed — all of the things I was looking forward to, I no longer have which is sad because that’s what usually gets me through the long days at work, and I especially need them during this time.” David Tutera and PartySlate are so proud and happy to have given Andrea and Ethan a version of their dream wedding. As Tutera said as he welcomed virtual guests to the couple’s wedding, “We are creating something we’ve never done before — and the most important thing is to create something memorable, not just for the two of them as a couple, but also for their family and friends.”

For guests, the anticipation began with beautifully-designed print and virtual invitations from Dogwood Blossom Stationery, who also provided printed programs, a sign-in book, and more for in-person guests. Virtual event technology allowed Tutera to welcome virtual guests before the ceremony began.

On June 27, Andrea and Ethan’s beautiful nuptials unfolded, combining gorgeous in-person design and inclusive virtual elements. The ceremony and intimate reception were attended in-person by a small number of family and friends, via Zoom for those unable to be present because of COVID-19 restrictions, and on Facebook Live for those who followed their story and wanted to share their joy (which numbered over a thousand of “guests” from around the world).

The couple chose a rectangular wedding arch adorned with blooms from Butterfly Floral & Event Design to frame them as they recited their moving vows. The intimate collection of in-person guests were socially-distanced under the tent and seated at tables for two during the ceremony and the reception. The tables were decked in peach linen and adorned with gold chargers, custom menus, and beautiful summer florals. ONEHOPE Vineyards — with their mission to support worthwhile causes to create a worldwide impact — donated wine and bubbly for Andrea and Ethan’s happy day.

Lace masks in the couple’s peach color story and sleek black masks were provided to guests for additional safety. In addition, SoBelle Favors sent everyone home with gorgeous custom chocolate favors. Meanwhile, the talented photographers from With Love and Embers captured Andrea and Ethan’s special day and the video team from Impressive Creations Wedding Cinematography is hard at work on a beautiful video keepsake for the couple.

Weddings amid a pandemic aren’t easy to plan and execute, but they affirm that love must continue. In his welcome to virtual guests, Tutera said, “The importance of celebrating life and love is something we cannot stop.”

Bride Andrea said after her wedding, “The greatest surprise to come out of this whole experience was realizing that I did not need to have 200 people surrounding me to have the wedding of my dreams. With the help of David, we were able to transform our backyard into a magical fairytale venue, and with just our immediate family we were able to have the best day ever. I also loved, loved, loved that people who would not have originally been included in the guest list due to number restrictions, were still able to participate virtually and witness the best day of my life. When the pandemic had canceled our original plans I was devastated, it was amazing how with the help of some flowers and a few cameras I was able to get that magic back.”

The Small Wedding Movement & How You Can Host Meaningful Nuptials in a Post-COVID-19 World

The idea of hosting an intimate wedding isn’t new, but in light of pandemic-related restrictions on gatherings, it’s a concept that’s seeing a strong renewed interest. In fact, there’s a small weddings movement afoot, with a growing number of event professionals invested in finding new ways to make petite-sized nuptials more accessible and turnkey — while preserving what is most special about weddings: gathering to celebrate the union of two special people.

We spoke with Beth Bernstein, Owner and Event Director of Chicago’s SQN Events, to learn more about the small wedding movement and her recent launch of Essential I Dos — which aims to make intimate celebrations as easy, stress-free, and affordable as possible. Additionally, Bernstein is a founding member of the national Small Wedding Society, a group dedicated to helping couples find a meaningful way to honor each other and the beauty of their wedding moment with those who matter most. Her co-founders hail from cities around the nation and have launched similar concepts in their hometowns: Minimal Matrimony from Sapphire Events in New Orleans, Tiny Weddings Dallas by Birds of a Feather Events, Minne Weddings from Rocket Science Events in Minneapolis, and Intimate I Dos by Amy Nichols Special Events in San Francisco.

While it may be some time before gatherings as we know them return to “normal,” these teams are conceiving of elegant ways to celebrate now. Read on to learn more from Bernstein about the types of small weddings she’s seeing and what couples can expect with this new way to wed and find joy in the moments that matter most.

What are you seeing and hearing about the trend toward smaller weddings?

It’s extremely important to me that couples never lose sight of the “why”. The most significant thing at the end of the day is to be married. I tell couples, “All you need to get married are each other, a marriage license, and an ordained officiant.” The rest is the proverbial icing on the cake.

For the foreseeable future, weddings will be smaller. The weddings I have planned in the past have averaged 150 to 200 guests but those numbers will inevitably shrink as the current situation evolves. I’m guiding my couples through the process of choosing whether to postpone their entire already-scheduled weddings or to have their ceremonies now and larger celebrations later. Love is not cancelled. Celebrations are not cancelled. I’m telling them, “Marry now, party later.”

In fact, the Small Wedding Society’s mantra is “people over things”. Focus on your nearest and dearest instead of the perfect napkin fold (though I do so love a beautiful napkin fold!).

How do you define a “small wedding”?

We use “small wedding” as an umbrella term. There are three types, in order of size: 1) Mini Wedding; 2) Micro Wedding; and 3) Elopement.

A mini wedding is just a smaller version of a typical wedding celebration with 50 or fewer guests. The couple has their ceremony, followed by a reception with a meal and dancing, and all of the bells and whistles of what we usually think of when we imagine a wedding. A micro wedding is paired-down to the essentials of a wedding day with a short and sweet ceremony, followed by champagne, a slice of cake, perhaps a few special dances, and portrait time with a photographer. Generally this type of celebration will include 30 or fewer close family and friends. An elopement is exactly what you envision — two people jetting off to get married, often without notice and without others knowing or accompanying them. The term “minimony” is also gaining traction. Think of it as an enhanced elopement, with up to 10 guests but still focused on the ceremony only.

Tell me about Essential I Dos.

Essential I Dos is a service designed for couples who want to have a micro wedding and prefer not to spend a lot of time planning on their own. It’s a completely seamless and turn-key process; I curate a team of the very best vendors for our micro weddings. By partnering with one photographer, one venue, and one décor team, I can offer couples economies of scale. My team secures the venue for the full day, adorned with stunning décor, and commissions an award-winning photographer for couples to capture their nuptials in a 90-minute window. Four couples will celebrate on the same day, with options to start their private ceremonies and receptions at noon, 2pm, 4pm, or 6pm. Our couples will have exclusive use of the venue during their time slot, ensuring their wedding is truly theirs and theirs alone.

We even provide the officiant and a ceremony template that can be personalized with readings. The couple may choose one attendant for each side and wed in a beautiful ceremony space with gorgeous florals. Following the ceremony, the couple and their guests will enjoy a short reception with a champagne toast and cake. The couple will then enjoy a personal photo shoot with the photographer.

Which parts of these micro weddings are customizable?

Couples will have their choice of bouquet and boutonniere styles, cake flavors, and music selection. They can further personalize their event by adding enhancements like live musicians, a videographer (including the ability to livestream the festivities), a “getaway” car, and more. We can also offer recommendations for hair and makeup, invitations, hotel suites, and more. (We even have a relationship with a premier bridal salon offering our brides 20% off their dress!). The couple will also have the opportunity to set up an engagement shoot, order a wedding album and prints, and more directly from the photographer. Additionally, couples who choose the last slot of the day may extend their time and transition into a mini wedding with a meal, dancing, and other traditions.

Lastly, if couples opt to do a micro wedding now and later decide they’d like to do a larger celebration when larger events are allowed in Illinois, we will happily apply a portion of what they spend with Essential I Dos to full event planning services with SQN Events.

When will the first Essential I Dos take place?

The first date is set for September 20, 2020. This, of course, is dependent upon our governor’s direction and CDC guidelines. The event will take place at the beautiful and elegant Revel Motor Row, one of Chicago’s historic landmarks. The venue also has a stunning courtyard which we plan to use if the weather cooperates. Nicole Zenner of Zen Events will perform the ceremony, the skilled team at Revel Decor, an innovative event design and production agency, will provide floral and décor elements, while Amanda Megan Miller Photography will capture the couple and every beautiful detail. Limelight Catering will provide the champagne and ECGB Cake Studio will create a delicious and stunning cake. We also have secured October 18th, again at Revel Motor Row, and will be releasing additional dates and venues soon.

What COVID-19-specific considerations will you need to make for the safety of each wedding?

We will follow every single Center for Disease Control (CDC) mandate as well as state guidelines. We purposely selected an experienced, spacious venue, which will allow us to space out guests according to safety protocol. We are not building this in a typical way for a small wedding in a small space; instead we have the flexibility to accommodate any distancing restrictions we might have to follow. We will also deep-clean and sanitize the space between events to ensure host and guest safety.

Do you believe that the small wedding trend will continue after the COVID-19 threat has passed?

While this movement has picked up steam due to the restrictions of COVID-19, I do think it will last. There have always been couples who would prefer to do something smaller, or even elope, but their parents plead their case for something bigger, mentioning that they’ve always pictured walking them down the aisle or making a toast at their wedding. Couples often want to appease their families with these experiences and “photo ops.” Small — especially micro — weddings, offer an attractive solution that meets both needs.

These smaller weddings will also provide a valuable service to those who want a destination wedding but know that many of their loved ones won’t be able to attend. They can host a micro celebration locally then proceed with their destination plans.

Note: Essential I Dos will be making a donation in honor of every couple (and in their name) to Project HOPE.
