Thanks to TikTok and Instagram, coquette style — a blend of vintage and romantic flair — has surged in popularity. This kid’s party took the feminine aesthetic and paired it with the birthday girl’s favorite movie: Harry Potter. The outcome? An incredibly unique and reimagined version of a classic kids party theme, featuring owl-topped Lambeth cakes, pink bow-wearing toads, and blushing London telephone booths.

“A trip around the sun” is a birthday party theme as cheery as it sounds. Each detail of this party shined bright, from the yellow palette to a sun-shaped balloon entrance, woven rays backdrop, and saturated, picnic-inspired tables. We love how this special celebration added bohemian elements to the design, from rope vases to wood chargers — but the theme itself can truly pair with any family’s distinct style.

It’s no surprise mini Swifties are opting for Taylor Swift-themed parties, and this 5th birthday left no blank space. Each corner of the party was dedicated to one of Taylor’s 11 albums — from a purple Speak Now piano corner to a Midnights ball pit, Fearless guitar stage, and a Lover dessert bar. Creativity is Taylor’s specialty — and an absolute must when it comes to a Taylor Swift-themed party.

A whole new world — in your backyard. This birthday party transformed a lucky 8-year-old’s home into a video game-inspired world made up of Minecraft-influenced blocks and décor. Replicating the game’s different features, the party boasted a “survival mode” photo op, “adventure mode” bounce house, and “creative mode” crafts. Parents stayed in “spectator mode,” of course, enjoying freshly catered pasta salad, fruit bowls, and more.

Wild West moments are going coast-to-coast in 2025 — and this 4th birthday party proves why. Succulent centerpieces, desert-inspired place settings, and a mirage of suspended cowgirl hats impressed even the adult guests in attendance. While kids enjoyed cactus cupcakes and cotton candy animals, parents sipped on monogrammed lattes and cowboy boot-adorned cocktails. It’s safe to say this kids’ party theme is anything but dry for all ages.

This kid’s party theme is our jam. The “berry first” birthday left a sweet impression from its strawberry colander towers, berry-colored floral baskets, and fruit-frosted cakes. Parents had their choice of fresh berry-infused cocktails, including spiked strawberry lemonades and strawberry mojitos (yes, please), while their little ones played blissfully with berry blocks and a berry-hued ball pit. We can’t get enough of this fruitful kids party inspiration.

Add lobster bake to the list of clever kids’ party themes you’ve never seen before — but would love to take a crack at. This summer birthday brought a backyard beach club lobster bake to life with custom lounge chairs, towels, pool floats, and more. As for the tables, playful lobster “claws” accentuated centerpieces alongside fishernet runners and nautical rope vases. The parents’ menu included lobster, of course, along with fresh oysters and coconut cocktails.

Fancy Nancy is all about a girl who has extravagant taste, a sophisticated vocabulary, and a love for lavish tea parties. Needless to say, a Fancy Nancy-themed birthday party is feminine, fabulous, and floral-filled. This themed birthday was just that, featuring an accessory wall for young guests to dress to the nines (think hot pink feather boas, butterfly wings, tiaras, and plastic kitten heels). Kid-friendly china, intricate linen, and pastel floral centerpieces created a stunning tea party for the birthday girl and her friends to sip and savor.
This is Halloween — for October birthdays. Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas inspired this 2nd birthday party, with a black and white palette and details that would make Jack Skellington proud. Spooky style never looked so good, with black marble tables, smokey ghost chairs, matte black balloons, and perfectly drawn up backdrops. We are particularly infatuated with the ghost-shaped cotton candy station and main character pop tarts.

Bring your little one’s favorite fictional town to life with a Ponyville-themed birthday party. This magical celebration looked straight out of a cheerful coloring book — from the saturated backdrops all the way down to the pastel burger buns. Little ones meandered from a “sugarcube corner” filled with cake to a rainbow bounce house, paint-your-own-trophy table, air brush truck, “pretty pony” parlor, and more. We give this celebration first place for creativity.
Childhood goes by in a blink of an eye. For parents, kids’ birthday parties are an opportunity to slow down and savor the magical moments. It’s a chance to gather with loved ones and celebrate love, laughter, and another trip around the sun.

This year, we’re excited to don our detective hats, once again, and predict the most exciting trends to take over kids’ birthday parties.
Keep reading to discover 15 kids’ birthday party trends that will surprise and delight guests. You’ll find everything from the best sips and bites to our favorite fads for entertainment and décor. Of course, you’ll also find the best cake trends to make your little one’s wishes come true. Growing up has never been so much fun — or Instagrammable.
But First, See If You Can Guess the 2024 Kids’ Birthday Trend in the Video…

Ask any kid, and they’ll tell you: One of the best parts of a birthday party is the cake. Bakery and dessert companies only get more creative as the years go by. This year, that creativity is resulting in colorful cakes with bubble icing. The best part? You can match your cake to your balloon décor for a seamless aesthetic.
MICHELLE FLORES PHOTOGRAPHY captures every detail from this Encanto-themed birthday party, including a delicious birthday bubble cake with sweet pastel hues.

The key to hosting a stress-free kid’s birthday party lies in two steps. First, hire a kid’s birthday party planner. Second, make sure there’s plenty of coffee on hand. What vendors should I hire for my kid’s birthday party?
They say it takes a village to raise a child. You could say that the same is true for throwing a kid’s birthday party. Leave the party planning to the professionals so you can actually soak up every moment of your child’s celebration. The last thing you want to do is climb a ladder to hang up streamers or worry over whether it’s safe to take the cake out of the oven.
We always recommend hiring a birthday party planner as your first step in the planning process. Your planner will save you time, money, and countless headaches. From there, you’ll want to make sure you cover your bases with a talented vendor team. Click on the links below to reach out to some of the top vendors near you.

As our Editor Jessi says, “Every kid’s birthday party is a milestone celebration — regardless of the year.” You don’t need to wait for a traditional milestone to celebrate your little one. Throw a trendy celebration for them, incorporating our predictions for the biggest kids’ birthday party trends of the new year.
We’ve rounded up 12 kids’ birthday party trends for an unforgettable bash in 2023. From balloon décor like you’ve never seen to elaborate mocktails for the kids, these trends are here to stay.
1. Balloon Installations Go Wild (Animals)
Balloon installations are always one of the most exciting décor elements at a kid’s birthday party. This year, we are expecting to see these formations get creative in fun animal shapes.
Adding a personal touch to your party doesn’t have to be extravagant. Customize sweet details that will make a big impact. You can personalize some of your kid’s favorite snacks with their name or or portrait on the packaging. Scroll down to see some of our favorite examples of this birthday party trend.
photographer: Diana Feil | planner: Party Crush Events
Tate’s sports-themed birthday party included a concessions stand filled with his very own personalized snacks (he’s lucky his name is already a brand!).
Keep kids entertained with hands-on art projects. What kid doesn’t love finger painting, face painting, or any creative outlet that allows them to get a little messy? While this fun activity will keep your child and their friends entertained, their finished art projects will double as fun party favors to take home.
Get kids excited by letting them choose their favorite face paint character. This circus-themed party featured a multitude of perfectly on-theme activities.
4. Live Entertainment That Gets Kids on Their Feet
Kids’ entertainment is more than than turning on the television or a music playlist. Live party entertainment, like musicians, gets kids on their feet and dancing. Expect your little one to be ready for a nap by the time the party is over.
Find and book the perfect entertainment for your kid’s birthday party.
Aloha Islanders Hawaiian Entertainment Inc. was the main attraction at this Moana-themed birthday party. They brought in Hula dancers and fire dancers to wow guests and get the kids dancing.
When a good pun presents itself, it’s hard to not lean into it. Whether on signage or invites, make sure your clever play on words makes an impact. Check out some of our favorite examples below, and find even more of the best party themes on PartySlate.

The days of primary-colored bounce houses for kids’ birthday parties are gone. If you’re going to go with a bounce house, make it pop. 10. Barbiecore Is More Than a Trend for the Adults
Barbiecore is one of our favorite themes here at PartySlate and we are ecstatic to see it trickle into kids’ birthday parties this year. The ultra-feminine, signature Barbie-pink, coupled with silhouettes of her portrait, is the theme of your little one’s dreams. Our favorite thing about this trend is that it has come full-circle. It began with kids, then became a glamorous adult trend, and is now back as an elevated style for kids.
11. Disco Balls Make Their Way to Kids’ Birthday Parties
Another trend moving from adult parties to kids is disco balls. Disco balls as décor definitely had their moment in 2022, but in 2023, we are going to see disco balls filling kids birthday parties. The best thing about this décor element is that it works with so many themes. You don’t have to commit to a full 70s-themed party to indulge in disco décor.
photographer: Isabella Alex Photo | planner: The Collective Creative Co.
| floral: Something Pretty Floral
In 2023, the style and design of the invitations is just as important as the rest of the décor at the event. Storybook-inspired, or interactive invites, get kids and parents excited for the birthday party to come. They will also paint a picture of the party and sometimes tell the story of the celebrant. There’s no better way to get your little guests excited than with an interactive invite.

How can I make my kid’s birthday party more creative?
PartySlate is your go-to website for everything event planning. From weddings to birthday parties, we offer inspiration for all types of events — as well as curated directories to help you find venues and vendors that will make your event come to life. Head to partyslate.com to start planning your kid’s birthday party now.
The best party themes for your kid’s birthday should reflect their personality. And if your child is creative, carefree, and adventurous, a boho birthday might be for them. A boho birthday party takes the cake as our current favorite kids birthday party theme.
Whether it’s your child’s name or a nod to the theme, signage is a chic and customized way to provide a focal point (and photo moment) for your child’s birthday party.
Leveraging pastels for a boho-inspired party color palette feels relatively straightforward, but consider playing with color combinations or prioritizing a single pastel hue.

When it comes to wicker, baskets are just the beginning. Infuse your tablescape, seating, and overall party décor with casual and comfortable, yet chic wicker.
photographer: Audra Wrisley Photography | CG & Co Events
It’s unavoidable: your kids are going to want a bounce house. But you can work with a decor partner, florist, or balloon artist to elevate your bounce house to be a beautiful focal point.
Photo ops can blend seamlessly with the rest of your party décor. Customized backdrops, decked-out seating areas, and creative installations are a few of our favorite approaches.
It wouldn’t be a kid’s birthday party without dessert. Cakes and take-home confections offer the perfect opportunity to carry your boho theme through to the very end of your event.
A boho style birthday party is all about pastel colors, vibrant flowers, and creating a free-spirited atmosphere. Décor pieces like rainbows, flower crowns, pampas grass, and matte balloons are perfectly on theme. Details such as themed signage, wicker accents, photo-ops, and decorated pastries will make your boho party even better.
How do you throw a boho birthday party?
First, hire an event planner that can help develop your vision for this special celebration. Then, hire your design team and any other vendors you need to create and execute the boho party of your child’s dreams. Don’t forget to secure a photographer to capture sweet pictures of your little one that you will cherish for years to come.

Your kid’s birthday party only happens once a year. Sadly, if you were like many parents, you may have had to make the difficult decision to cancel last year’s celebration. Now, after so many months of social-distancing, celebrations have never felt more important. While the pandemic is far from over, there is finally a light on the horizon. Kids’ birthdays are back — in both new and creative ways.
Last year, we predicted kids’ birthday party trends would include individually-packaged meals, take-home desserts, and on-theme face masks. While some of these trends will inevitably continue, birthday vendors are dreaming up even bigger ways to celebrate your little one.
Get ready for sophisticated setups — inspired by some of the hottest wedding trends. You’ll also find unique tablescape ideas that might even convince your kid to sit down and eat a vegetable or two.
From wow-worthy décor to imaginative photo ops, these kids’ birthday party trends have us excited for 2022. Get ready for the best year yet — where birthday wishes really do come true.
Kids’ Birthday Party Themes for Outdoor Enthusiasts
We’ve all gained a greater appreciation for the great outdoors over the last couple of years. With on-and-off social-distancing mandates — where even holidays and major life milestones were often celebrated over Zoom — the outdoors has come to represent a place of freedom and connection. In fact, backyard birthdays and weddings have never been more popular.
Consequently, we’re not surprised that nature-themed kids’ parties are gaining traction. Plant, animal, mineral — you name it. The natural world is worth celebrating, along with your little one.
As it turns out, a slice of watermelon is all you need for the ultimate birthday inspiration. With a bright pink and green color palette, this kid’s birthday party wows with on-theme food, immersive activities, and plenty of photo ops. Discover everything from melon mojitos (for the adults, of course) to a hot pink bouncy house.
How do we love this birthday party? Let us count the ways. Towering daisy sculptures, daisy place settings, and daisy-style cupcakes are just a few of our favorite details. Make sure to see other photo-worthy elements such as a daisy covered porch swing and floral crown station.
Animal sounds are some of the first “words” babies learn. It seems like kids never outgrow their love for animals, and with good reason. They make the best party themes, after all. This year we’re shining a spotlight on the small but mighty butterfly. We love how this birthday party soars to new heights with a pastel color palette and wings for all the younger guests.
It’s par-tee time, indeed. Kids and parents alike will love a golf-themed party — especially when there’s a round of miniature golf involved. Other adorable details from this tented birthday party include a golf-ball decked photo op and golf ball-like cake pops. Oh, and did we mention the white bouncy house with a cascade of balloons?
Parents know the difficulty of keeping little ones in their seats — especially at dinner time. Fear not. With creative seating arrangements, kids will be eager to settle into their chairs (and maybe even eat their vegetables).
After the birthday cake, party rentals are a number one priority for your kids’ birthday party. Make sure to check out PartySlate’s curated directory to find top local and national rental companies. It’s time to sit down and celebrate in style.
Did someone say, “Boho-glam?” These miniature rattan thrones are guaranteed to have younger guests rushing to their seats. As adults, we can honestly say, we wish we were small enough to join in the festivities. Sigh. Make sure to see other photos from this adorable celebration. You’ll even find another 2022 trend: See if you can guess what it is.
Floor pillows turn any meal into an adventure. We love how an eclectic mix of cushions (from boho wicker to funky tassels) create an instant party vibe. Moreover, check out how the curated details from this gorgeous tablescape elevate the look — turning pure fun into a glamorous experience.
At PartySlate, we always have our eyes on the latest wedding trends. Over the last few years, some of our favorite trends have ranged from tie-dyed florals to ultra adorable mini charcuterie boards.
As Picasso famously said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” We 100% approve of kids’ parties taking their cues from some of the most glamorous wedding celebrations. See how wedding ideas are the gift that keeps on giving.
Is there anything more unique than teal palm leaves or cotton candy-hued foliage? Dyed floral centerpieces took over wedding centerpieces last year — and are now making their mark on the most photo-worthy kids’ tablescapes. Make sure to see how an overarching balloon installation kept the color theme going at this whimsical birthday celebration.
Pampas grass routinely made an appearance in some of PartySlate’s top events of the last few years. In fact, it seems like pampas grass will always be trending. Even the Death Star and planets like Tatooine can benefit from this ultra-chic foliage. We are obsessed with how Star Wars gets a new (and elevated look) with the help of pampas décor. Of course, that’s just the tip of the asteroid. Discover even more picture-perfect details below.
Wedding planners have been reinventing the color wheel with monochromatic-themed celebrations that range from all the traditional all-white to the zanier all-yellow. Birthday hosts, take note: Monochrome has never been hotter. See how this Minions-inspired birthday party has us swooning over everything yellow — from golden roses to banana peel cutouts.
Geode cakes add instant glamour to any celebration — be it a luxe ballroom wedding or dinosaur-themed kid’s birthday party. We especially love how two golden dinosaurs replicate the traditional wedding topper — minus the dino part, of course. Discover other incredible elements from this fun-filled celebration. We’ll give you a hint: There’s life-size dinosaur fossils on the scene.
The pandemic had caterers scrambling to rethink serving stations at weddings. Lo and behold, the mini charcuterie board was born. We hope this trend is here to say, and we are happy to see it appearing at kids’ birthday parties. After all, kids also deserve to indulge in the finer things in life — and stay safe while doing so. Click to see other personalized dining ideas like individually-served desserts. Talk about yum.
While we are overjoyed that life is beginning to return to normal (at least the new normal), we are glad to see event planners continuing to stretch their imaginations. As far as we’re concerned, these pandemic party trends can stick around for another year or two.
With social-distancing mandates, outdoor dining with heated igloos became the next big thing. We love how this backyard birthday party features a branded superhero pod where kids could don the costume of their choice and transform into their favorite superhero. We’d say that’s even better than a Michelin-star meal.
Salads in a jar have long been a staple of the PartySlate office lunch. After all, they’re so convenient (and Instagrammable). We love how this concept has shifted to desserts. With individually-served mini birthday cakes becoming increasingly popular due to COVID-19, we expect this trend to stick around. Our stomachs (and Instagram accounts) approve.
Food buffets all but disappeared throughout the pandemic. In their place, individual servings of pre-packaged snacks kept guests satiated — and safer. We especially love how packaging became the perfect blank canvas for branding and party themes. These “tackle box” snack packs are just one of many picture-perfect details at this fishing-themed party. Discover everything from fishing bobber cake pops to “live bait” fruit cups.
Ask any chef. Food can rise to the levels of fine art. While molecular gastronomy has been reinventing restaurants (and even corporate events) for years, kids’ catering is finding its own ways to shine. Caterers are thinking outside the box (and the traditional birthday cake) with new presentations and flavors. Sometimes, wishes really do come true.
Who said kids aren’t allowed to play with their food? These custom-made breakable chocolate hearts — designed to match the pastel tablescape — turned dessert into an immersive activity. Click to see other trending details from this backyard celebration. You’ll find dyed floral centerpieces, cushion seating, and so much more.
Last year, we predicted popcorn would be a top food trend for 2021. We’re going a step further this year. Expect to find popcorn paired with sweet desserts — like this luxury birthday cake accented by white chocolate popcorn. Discover other mouthwatering desserts from this Twinchella-themed first-birthday party. We especially love the ice cream cones topped with — you guessed it — popcorn.
We’ve all been there: The dessert menu comes, and it’s impossible to decide on just one option. This carnival-themed birthday party gave guests the best of both worlds with two-desserts-in-one. From ice cream sundaes topped with donuts to cupcakes crowned with cotton candy, dessert just got a whole lot sweeter.
We’ve said it before: Party vendors have been forced to think outside the box over the last couple years. Luckily for us, the sphere was born.
Spherical birthday party décor is transforming backyards and venues alike. More than just party decorations, circles and orbs are creating everything from the perfect photo op to immersive activities. We have to give a round of applause.
Not all that glitters is gold. Matte color schemes are taking over everything from manicured nails to living room walls. Best of all, matte is making its mark on kids’ birthday balloon décor. Click to see how matte balloons created one photo op after another at this golf-themed birthday party. We especially love how the tablescape backdrop evokes a golf course and bright blue skies.
You don’t need a beach for beach ball décor. We love how beach balls are taking over everything from backyards to party venues. Other vibrant details from this backyard birthday bash include custom blocks, neon tables, and colorful desserts.
As COVID-19 cases begin to drop, and social gatherings return in full-swing, a favorite activity makes a reappearance. That’s right: Ball pits are back. We especially love how this ball pit features a slide as well as color-coordinated balls. As you can imagine, no kid wanted to leave this daisy-themed birthday party without going down the slide one last time.
Even the greatest kids’ birthday party must come to an end. Luckily, photographs last forever. In addition to hiring a skilled photographer to capture your little one’s big day, we suggest creating the perfect photo op. While your kids may not be on Instagram, they will certainly appreciate an opportunity to pose for the camera.
Photo cardboard cutouts aren’t just for fairs. We are obsessed with this custom cardboard golf cart framed by pastel matte balloons. Other photo-worthy spots at this adorable birthday party included an elaborate dessert cart and white bouncy house decorated in balloon décor.
This Baby Shark second-birthday party wows at every angle. We love how the entire private residence becomes a photo op with two-story length streamers and balloon installations. Other incredible photos ops at this creative birthday bash include an on-theme lounge area and Baby Shark greeters.
After finding your favorite ideas and inspiration on PartySlate, we recommend assembling a talented team of event vendors. Use PartySlate’s curated directory to find top local and national vendors. Some top kids’ birthday vendors to consider include:
We also recommend hiring an event planner to take the stress out of the planning process. Make sure you’re enjoying your child’s milestone, not running around fixing falling streamers or tracking down missing cupcakes. Moreover, an event planner is more than just a logistics expert. Ask your event planner for vendor recommendations and additional ideas and inspiration.

Where to Celebrate a Kid’s Birthday Party?
While backyard birthday parties are increasingly popular, an event venue offers many perks. Venues often come with in-house vendors and rentals. Additionally, venues often provide limited planning services that help facilitate a smoother planning process.
Use PartySlate to find an available kids’ birthday party venue that meets your needs. Make sure to use the filters to narrow your search by amenities, location, guest count, and more.

Kids’ Birthday Party Food Ideas for 2021
1. Individually-Packaged Meal Boxes
What’s better than party food? Party food neatly packaged in perfectly on-theme boxes — boxes perfect for each guest to enjoy. No more elbowing each other in a buffet line or eating chips that other guests’ hands have rifled through — individually-packaged meal boxes are ushering in a new era of personalization and safety. This is one of the kids’ birthday party food that ideas that we can really get behind.
This “Donut Grow Up” themed birthday party incorporated donuts everywhere from décor on each chair and personalized juice boxes to the must-see cake. We long to open the lunch boxes and see what treats await pint-sized guests.
We love how pop-up parties are a surprise to the celebrant and guests alike. This pop-up birthday celebrated the the best-selling video game of all time, Minecraft — and one lucky birthday boy — with a green-hued balloon arch and an awesome, on-theme cake. Guest enjoyed individually-packed lunch boxes before getting their game on in a mobile game truck.

Sure, a themed cake has become de rigueur for kids’ birthday parties, but we’re especially excited to see how dessert tables are including more sweets than ever. Not only are dessert tables boasting memorable backdrops, but they are also featuring elaborately-themed cookies. These iced confections are often individually-wrapped and perfect for pandemic-era parties (and as take-home treats).
Usually “Under the Sea” themed parties are awash in blues and ocean creatures, but this little girl’s celebration took a more feminine approach with an ombré of pink and coral (of course!) hues. Guest enjoyed a picture-perfect photo spot, and we especially love the reef-themed cookies. They’re almost too pretty to eat. What’s not to like about coral-hued, coral-themed treats?

This first-birthday party hit it out of the park with its baseball theme. The little “Rookie of the Year” received a game ball signed by all his friends and wore a uniform inspired by his family “team” name. Pint-sized guests caught baseball mitt cookies that held frosted baseballs sporting signature red-stitching.
We know, cake pops aren’t new (in fact, the sweet fad has been going strong since blogger Bakerella invented them in 2008). But we’re inspired by the new ways that these confections are cleverly expressing themes at kids’ birthday parties. It turns out that those little magic orbs of cake crumbles and frosting are a single-serve creative-themed party favor and treat all-in-one.
This sweet safari gave guests glimpses of cheetahs, zebras, and giraffes, oh my — all on the cake pops, no less. Click through to see the three-tiered cake and its wild prints and even wilder backdrop with Mount Kilimanjaro prominently placed.
This first birthday party, perfectly set in a luxurious setting at Walt Disney World, evoked all that is whimsical about being young. A chic black-and-white personal patisserie backdrop created the perfect space for a sweets-forward celebration. Don’t miss other trends being set at this party, like the incredible themed cookies.
This first-birthday party evoked fall with an ombré of chic pink pumpkin details. We love this gathering’s elegant photo moment with its muted rose-hued floral and greenery surround — as well as its oh-so-sweet pumpkin-shaped cake pops. Don’t miss the elaborate cake backdrop.
Is a cake pop still a cake pop if it looks like an ice cream cone? Yes. And it’s every bit as delicious. This lucky two year old celebrated her birthday in a pastel paradise with a heaping scoop of delectable theming that included the world’s cutest ice cream cake — not a cake made of ice cream, but marzipan art of an ice cream truck décor and dancing cones.

4. Picture-Perfect Photo Spots
People have been “doin’ it for the ‘gram” for years. As such, curated photo spots have become standard issue at events from weddings and milestone-birthday parties to anniversaries and corporate gatherings. We love seeing the creative ways that event designers express themes and personality in carefully-curated photo spots — and now their design energy is benefitting the tiniest of clients.
Back in 2018, BizBash trend-spotted “floral installations in cars.” Now we’re excited to share a new trend: those chic displays writ small. In fact, we’ve never loved florals in cars more than in this picture-perfect scene at a Beyoncé-inspired photo spot. Two adorable little girls, plus one perky dog, posed atop a cheetah-printed car spilling red roses for a special fourth-birthday celebration.

This #10forthewin NBA-draft-themed tenth-birthday party merged gold and basketball for glamorous results. We adore the gold basketballs and, frankly, can never get enough neon in this photo spot. Don’t miss the hip glowing neon lounge area and an NBA star visit that made this swanky celebration a winner.

This glorious rubber ducky-themed first birthday party boast creative details galore — including bright yellow ducks constructed from balloons, a wow-worthy “splish-splash” birthday cake, and more. We also can’t get enough of the bathtub floating florals and balloons as not only the best backdrop, but the perfect photo op. Say bubbles!
This birthday party was inspired by Beyoncé’s musical film and visual album “Black is King“. Two scenes delighted guests: a tea party and a cheetah-filled, gold-hued extravaganza. Add four cakes, interactive installations, and toddler-friendly activities — and you have one very lucky birthday girl. Pandemic-safe additions included personal hand sanitizers and individually-boxed pizzas.
The family also enjoyed a styled shoot that would’ve made the Queen B herself envious. We adore the strong, positive messaging in this inspiring and beautiful theme.

This “Time Flies” themed party celebrated a child’s birthday (when it’s adults who can fully appreciate how quickly time goes). This party makes us long for more hours to explore every perfect detail.
The “In-Flight Meals” were a major upgrade over airplane fare, as were the seats — chic ghost chairs personalized with each “passenger’s” name. Don’t miss other perfectly themed moments like the passport photo spot and “baggage claim” with take-home treats.
Forbes declared “glamping” (a combo of glamorous and camping) “2020’s Hottest Travel Trend,” so why shouldn’t it be the hottest party theme too?
We love how every chic detail appeals to a kid’s sense of adventure and an adult’s sense of style. Furry pillows, tents filled with balloons, a greenery wall, and (of course) tabletop s’mores make for an elevated experience in an elegant all-white space.

We never tire of the rainbow. It’s always there with its predictable, ordered colors, reassuring us that there’s something good at its end. Rainbows have been filling the skies of kids’ drawings ever since the invention of crayons.
But Crayola’s starter set hasn’t quite prepared us for the ROYGBIV of 2021. The new rainbow adorning kids’ parties boasts a more muted palette of chic pastels. New year, new hues.
Rainbows are generally vibrant affairs. As we head into 2021, we’re seeing ROYGBIV in a more muted palette — an explosion of orderly pastels that’s making us smile.
This first-birthday party expresses the theme with a perfectly-pastel menu, balloon installation, cake, welcome sign, and more. Even the menu followed suit with “rainbow grilled cheese” and “rainbow Jell-O.”
What’s whimsical and modern, yet traditional? This little girl’s Korean Dohl (first-birthday celebration). We love how this team used the colors of the rainbow (in proper order, of course) in the hand-painted acrylic elements, which included the career representations the birthday girl chose from to indicate her potential future interests, as is traditional at Dohl gatherings.
Balloons have drifted down to tabletops, offering a colorful option for centerpiece décor. We’re thrilled to see this balloons-as-décor trend still going strong.
We’ve seen them flood ceilings like clouds, adorn arched entrances, and create happy photo ops. Now, we’re seeing them lining the center of tables — the centerpieces of our brightly-hued dreams.
This baby shower celebrating the impending arrival of twins took its inspiration from the tropics. We adore tropical-themed parties and this one just jumped to the head of our list.
Pops of colorful balloons (pun intended) were mixed with fern and monstera leaves to create a chic centerpiece that flowed off the table ends. Click to see floral flamingos and a perfectly-posable photo spot.
This first birthday party took wee guests on safari — under balloon trees wearing mini pith helmets. We can’t get enough of the clever theming and especially love the mix of greenery (real and in balloon form) that evokes the natural world. Don’t miss the unique ceiling installation and its slithering surprise.
Carnivals are a perfect solution for parties during a pandemic. They offer games that can be spaced out in a backyard and fun theming for the dessert table. Plus, the red-and-white palette evokes nostalgia during a time when we all could use a little feelgood return to days past.

“Video games” and “active” are terms not often found in the same sentence. Ever since the first home gaming system debuted in 1972, couches have been dented courtesy of video games.
Now that the American Ninja Warrior craze and X Games have taken obstacle courses to the next level and the video game devotee numbers are rising, we’re seeing a new kind of party — and we are all for this amalgam of theme and activity.
This Call of Duty-themed party took the concept to the most fun extremes. The video game influenced everything from the menu to the boot camp challenge which tested kids’ real-life skills on a high-energy obstacle course. Don’t miss the camo décor and chocolate grenades.
Scavenger hunts are age-old party fun, so how can they suddenly be a trend? Well, we can attribute their resurgence (the same as carnival games) to their relative safety during a pandemic — as well as nostalgia.
We know we’re talking about kids’ parties here, but solving clues and running around to gather prizes sounds like a pretty fun time for adults as well. Can someone host an adult scavenger hunt, please? (Oh wait — that’s geocaching!)
This Paw Patrol-themed party featured the cute characters everywhere from the photo spot to the adorable cake. But our favorite appearance is on the scavenger hunt clues which led kids on an active adventure of their own.
Kids’ Birthday Party Ideas for Keeping it Safe in 2021
10. Birthday Boxes for All
We already mentioned the trend of meal boxes at kids’ parties — but that’s not the beginning and end of the birthday box story. Birthday boxes filled with activities (and often snacks) are like a gift for your guests. Plus, they keep activities separate and safe.
Graceful. Beautiful. Thoughtful. These adjectives aptly describe this sweet swan-themed first-birthday party. The swans brought the grace, the birthday girl and her party’s décor provided the beauty, and the thoughtfulness came courtesy of clear birthday boxes pre-filled with activities and snacks for partygoers.

Pandemic parties necessarily involve extraordinary efforts to keep everyone safe. Masks have become the go-to way to minimize the virus’ spread. We are delighted to see this essential element upgraded with customizations that include matching a party’s hue, theme, and/or prints.
This Fish Camp-themed birthday party was a safety — and fun — trend-setter (hint: you’ll see it again on this list). The custom watercolor theming created a cohesive celebration with the chic design carried through to the face masks and the cozy blankets given to each guest.
The décor color story picked up the blues and greens of the beautiful art with balloon installations and an amazing cake featuring a bear holding a colorful trout (click to explore every rich detail of this party).
The Family That Parties Together, Stays Together at Kids’ Birthday Parties in 2021
12. Keep it “All in the Family” with Tents
Thank heavens for “glamping” — the magical combo of camping and glamour that has us willing to consider going into the woods. Kids need no such prompting; they delight in exploring the natural world. This trend offers us the best of both worlds: luxe family tents.
This solution to social distancing while still celebrating keeps families who’ve been sheltering together intact while also folding them into the larger group. We adore the creativity that pandemic circumstances have given rise to.
See, we didn’t keep you away from the perfection of the Fish Camp-themed party for too long. We’re revisiting the celebration to ooh and aah over the clever pandemic solution to party-while-social-distancing: family tents.
Each family invited to this gathering was provided their own glamorous tent. Each mini campsite boasted bean bag chairs, plush blankets, a fully-stocked cooler, perfectly themed tackle boxes filled with appetizers — and a view of the movie screen. We would actually go camping if it looked even a little like this dreamy scene.
13. Shared Parties Celebrate Multiple Family Members at Once
Sharing is caring. Especially when it multiplies the joy by celebrating multiple occasions at once. We adore this trend that brings families together for a myriad of good reasons.
We just adore this elegant princess party. The mother-and-daughter birthday celebration boasted gorgeous florals in geometric gold vessels on the adult tables and glittering gold crowns and castles on the kids’ tables for a cohesive vibe.
A chic greenery-filled ceiling installation and askew shelves filled with succulents (that we adore) brought nature in for this lovely joint affair.
This Mother’s Day brunch celebrated moms — and their little ones. It was a party with the mammoth task of making mothers feel pampered while engaging their little ones. The pink palette provided a perfect backdrop to the outdoor soirée.
Sweets included rose gelatin, parfaits, pastries, and a donut charcuterie (yeah, you read that right) — sugar high all around. In an inspired touch, each child had their own personalized mini cake at their seat where they were able to dive in and “cake smash” to their hearts content.

When it comes to over-the-top, gorgeous first birthday parties, there’s no first birthday party venue in the New York area that’s as busy as Waterside Events. Boasting absolutely stunning views of the NYC skyline from towering windows at the water’s edge, the space plays host to beautiful, elegant celebrations.
Waterside Events sits directly across the river from New York’s iconic skyline, yet is easily accessible for suburb-dwellers in its North Bergen, New Jersey locale. From the views to the fare, the space is the perfect first birthday party venue (and it also happens to be a great spot for wedding showers, communion celebrations, brunch, and gorgeous evening weddings against a sparkling city backdrop).
In fact, we saw so many creative and unique first birthday parties on Waterside’s PartySlate profile — including a few amazing Korean Dols or Doljanchis, a Korean first birthday tradition to bless the child — that we reached out to ask for advice for anyone planning a child’s milestone celebration.
We spoke with Lesley Lovett, banquet manager and seasoned event planner at Waterside Events. She gave us the lowdown on everything from how far out you should book a first birthday party venue to menu items that both kids and adults love.

Read on to discover how many guests you should plan to have as well as the most creative first birthday party themes this experienced team has seen.
1. How early should parents book a first birthday party venue?
I would say around 6 months out or so. We book up daytimes quickly, so afternoons can get taken quickly.
2. What menu items are a hit with kids and adults at first birthday parties?
Kids and younger children love clean pasta (plain with red sauce or butter), chicken fingers, grilled cheese, sliders, fries, mini-pretzels — kid stuff. For adults, hosts often choose a prix-fixe menu, like a brunch buffet, lunch buffet or sit-down lunch. For adults, prix fixe sitdown lunch is often four-courses offer the choice between three entrees with orders taken at the table.
Of course, we also offer vegetarian options and can accommodate any kind of allergy or food preference. With every event, we ask about severe allergies. In fact, We don’t cook with anything that includes peanuts or other typical allergens just to be on the safe side. Our menus also handily note GF and other specialty items to guide guests.
3. What other event professionals do you suggest working with for hosting a unique, themed birthday party?
Once you’ve chosen a first birthday party venue, whether or not to use a planner depends on your budget and type of celebration. I notice that if the parents do hire a planner for a beautiful theme and décor, they often hire a photographer to capture the day. Parents often hire a planner/designer hybrid.
We do have a limited number of planners that we can recommend who know our location very well. It’s definitely an advantage to hire a planner who knows the dimensions of the space and load-in details. We build relationships with planners and having worked as a team before helps events become seamless and come together beautifully. For larger gatherings we have seen hosts bring in live kid-friendly entertainment, like clowns, magicians, balloons, face painters, etc.
4. What size guest list do you recommend for first birthday parties?
I find that when you decide to have a first birthday party at a catering venue, it’s often more of an adult party than a kids party. Your house would be less formal, but a party at a beautiful venue tends to be more for the adults. For some parties we will have 10 kids coming and others will have 40, it really just depends on the family and friends and what they choose. However, when there are more kids, it’s a good idea to provide some kind of entertainment.
5. What activities have you seen work well at first birthday party celebrations?
In addition to the entertainment options I’ve mentioned, if younger guests are between 3 and 6 years old, a little craft table or coloring area keeps them engaged — but definitely steer clear of glitter!
There’s also a meaningful activity for Korean first birthday parties (Korean Dols) that has the birthday child choose items that will predict his or her future.
PartySlate note: The idea behind the Doljabi custom that Lesley mentions above is to predict possible future careers and activities for the one-year-old being celebrated. Specifically, 5-8 items are placed in front of the child that represent different professions — like a computer mouse to indicate technology, a gavel for a judge, a stethoscope for a doctor, and so on.
Whichever item the child gravitates to and picks up first indicates their interest. Learn more about Korean first birthday parties and Doljabi customs at Wikipedia, Kid World Citizen or The Soul of Seoul.
6. What is unique about your venue that has attracted so many beautiful birthday celebrations?
First, of course, the view alone is our biggest selling point. The atmosphere is really bright and open — it’s definitely not like an enclosed banquet room. And our location offers a real wow-factor for out-of-towners. We’re right on the Hudson River, which also makes us a great midway point for families from NY and NJ to meet to celebrate.
Our food is also incredible. Our head chef (who is also one of the owners) is CIA-trained [referring to the highly-revered Culinary Institute of America]. I’m really proud of our food and service. We are a Greek-owned space, and the family has been in the restaurant catering business for many years. We have really flexible chefs who can customize menus based on preferences or nationality and are very open to special requests. Your grandmother wants to bring cookies in? That’s okay, we allow something special like a dessert. We really want to incorporate your customs into the party.

9-4-8-1: B’Day. If you’re a dedicated fan (like myself), or just keep up with important dates in pop culture, you know the significance of September 4th: the birth date of our Queen Bey, Beyoncé Giselle Knowles-Carter. Every year around this time, we see a renewed interest in bee themed party ideas by virtue of Beyoncés association with the black-and-yellow honey-producer.
From inspiring themed merchandise to influencing the name of her fan club, “the BeyHive,” the bee has emerged as as the symbol for the multi-talented Queen of Pop — and the party theme of our dreams. To wish a very happy birthday to Beyoncé — and impress any and all divas in your life, we’ve rounded up our 7 favorite bee themed party ideas.
Now we’re talking invitations that are sure to get your guests into formation, flawless décor that incorporates chic black and yellow color combos, and catering menus that infuse sweet honey into the bites and sips. We’ve got suggestions that will have your guests abuzz.
Look. The honeycomb details and vibrant colors of these invitations will have guests counting down the days until your buzzy soirée. We love how the hexagons within the honeycomb design boast their own luxurious patterns and also how the bee trailing onto the RSVP card adds a fun pop of yellow. Perfect for any bee-themed party!
Make like the bees and take your celebration outside. This beautiful dinner party defines the term ‘beehive-to-table’ — taking honey straight from the source and incorporating it at every delectable stage of this alfresco farm experience.
Create comfy lounge areas — like this one at an experiential activation for the brand Bumble in Aspen — that incorporate the unmistakable yellow, black & white hues of our bee muse. Don’t forget to include hexagonal-shaped accents that mimic honeycombs to tie everything together, and opt for a mix of textures to add even more visual interest to your décor.
You simply cannot have a Bey-inspired party without lemonade. Now we’re talking: bee-shaped, woodcut cocktail menus at this Dallas luncheon feature a refreshing, honey lemonade aperitif for guests to sip on while they mingle. You could also serve the aptly-named “stinger” cocktail at your bee-themed party.
There’s more! Give your guests individual jars of local honey, with a custom label, as an easy and delicious take-away. We adore how this urban farm in Chicago not only served as the venue for this chic baby shower and fully catered the celebration with organic produce grown on site, but also packaged honey from their very own hives as a sweet treat.
For this bee-themed party, not only is the menu shaped like a honeycomb, honey is infused into every delicious catered course. House-made biscuits with whipped honey butter, spinach salad with cracked pepper honey vinaigrette, and creme brûlée with real honeycomb. Your guests will be dangerously in love with this menu!
Dripping honey and style, this unique baby shower cake not only incorporates bees, but the hive as well — and we love the added layers and texture of the blue honeycombs. This special gathering, which honored parents who had been spending day and night in the NICU, reminds us that celebrations bring people together to share the most special of life’s milestones.

Make sure to find a creative bakery for your bee-themed party. These cute cake pops with tiny bees on them are the perfect sweet treat for your dessert table. Add tiny crowns to the bees for an extra Bey-upgrade.
We’re not through. This bee-themed Bat Mitzvah in NYC sent guests home with fun snaps in front of a lush backdrop featuring artfully hovering bee décor. Check out the rest of the celebration to see more details we love like a honeycomb-inspired cake and custom swag.
