At PartySlate, we are always looking for creative ways to take events to the next level. We watch new event ideas come and go every year, and this year we are spotting the hottest catering trends that are to come in 2023. One of our favorite approaches to catering is an increased focus on sustainability and supporting local businesses. From growing all of their own vegetables in an on-site greenhouse to sourcing ingredients solely from local suppliers, you’ll find the best caterers with the freshest produce — and ideas.

BTWC Co. Culinary Concepts elaborates by saying, “Party hosts, and guests, are becoming more health-conscious and want to hire a caterer they can trust to serve clean food that will make them feel good. The party doesn’t necessarily end at the end of the night. When you wake up in the morning, you can feel the difference in eating clean food.”

1. Sustainably-Sourced Is Best

PartySlate is proud to endorse caterers that practice and promote sustainability. Leaving this world a better place than we found it is a mission near and dear to these caterers’ hearts. Read on to find their insight on catering trends that are making a difference.

Delivering Experiences notes, “Food should be dynamic, creative, and inspiring. Sustainability is a very important trend in our industry that will continue in 2023. Using locally-sourced ingredients, reducing food waste, and moving to a greener service are ways to inspire guests through food.”

Deborah Miller Catering & Events comments on this topic, saying, “Clients want to see sustainability through every step of their event. Guests want to know that each ingredient in a dish is sustainable, that there is a focus on sustainability in a company’s culture, and that the dishes they’ve come to love can be made without undue impact on the environment. A focus on local producers for every step of the catering process is pivotal in achieving this trend, as well.”

2. Support Local Every Chance You Get

In addition to sustainable ingredients, locally-sourced ingredients are just as important to hosts and guests alike. Wine Meats Cheese says, “Post-shutdown, our clients have taken a keen interest in where their beverages come from as well as the stories behind the wineries, breweries, and distilleries that we purvey. We see this support as providing more and more artisans the opportunity to share their craft with us and the events we serve.”

4. Open-Fire Cooking Is All the Rage

Party hosts are wanting to create an immersive environment for their guests. Open-fire cooking is the perfect way to accomplish this. This preparation style not only draws intrigue from passerby, it showcases the chefs’ talents and hard work. Find a few of our favorite examples from top caterers below.

A New Twist on an “Open-Concept Kitchen”

Unique Culinary Collective told us about a recent corporate event they catered, saying, “The client wanted their food and beverage experience to be the entertainment for the evening. Our operations and culinary team accepted the challenge and built a full guest-facing kitchen behind an 18-foot-station display.

“Featuring wood fire grills and ovens, charcoal spit, and more, freshly made gyros, kibbeh, and hummus were plated right in front of the guests. A feast of the eyes and senses allowed guests to interact with our chefs, learning about the craft. This unexpected approach to catering peels back the veil and gives guests the opportunity to see the inner-workings of the culinary team.”

5. Sweet Treats Go Vegan

Considering your guests dietary needs and choices is a way of taking care of them; it shows them that they are important to you. Catering by Design offers insight into this trend by saying, “its all about an increase in dietary, vegetarian, and vegan-focused options.”

They go on to say, “It’s no secret that we as a society have begun to reduce meat consumption in the past few years. We have seen a huge increase in requests for vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free, and other less-traditional menu options. Clients want full menus, food stations, and desserts that can accommodate a variety of dietary and allergy needs. Using fresh, local ingredients, we are able to create unforgettable menus that hit every dietary need.”

6. Childhood Classics Are Here to Stay

We have seen childhood treats come back in style in many elegant ways. Marcia Selden Catering & Events compares catering trends to fashion trends, saying, “Much like fashion, trends come back in and out of style. We have begun embracing the nostalgia of comfort food with a twist, elevating the fan favorites with fun and clever presentations.”

Kuma’s Corner notes, “Comfort food reminds clients of happy moments from home and their childhood. With so much constant change, we’re all holding on to a bit of the past. Choosing food that is associated with good memories of childhood and incorporating those flavors into your wedding is one way to do that.”

7. Mocktail Shooters & Shots Are In

We have seen mocktails rise to the top of bar menus in recent years. This year, we are predicting mocktail shooters and shots as a fun twist on this trend. With our focus turned to health and wellness, guests and hosts are opting for a non-alcoholic option.

Contemporary Catering and Event Production believes, “Exciting nonalcoholic beverages will have a big impact on events this coming year.” They go on to note, “There has certainly been a big push for promoting health and wellness. This is unique as it allows people to focus on human connection — the reason we party in the first place.”

8. Walls of Fame Get a Moment to Shine

We all know party-goers love a unique serving station. Footers Catering speaks of this trend, saying, “Vertical food stations are an unexpected and fun way catch your guests’ attention. They are fully customizable and add depth and height to a display. They can be interactive between Chef and guests, allowing for a more personal dining experience. Unique vessels elevate the presentation and allow guests to enjoy delicious food and conversation at the same time.”

Gaurav Anand says, “The majority of clients and guests are attracted by the presentation and appearance of food displays more than the taste — one eats with the eyes first.”

9. Tea Gets Boozy

Last year, we predicted tea stations as one of the hottest catering trends of 2022. This year, we are loving tea in a different form. Bubbles & Brews Massachusetts speaks of a trend being served up at their restaurant, Mecha Noodle Bar, located in Brookline, Massachusetts. Come partake in this tasty Boozy Boba trend that you won’t find anywhere other than their establishments, they say.

Deborah Miller Catering & Events also comments on this hot new trend, saying, “Boozy Boba is a new drink trend that is borrowing on the popularity of the Espresso Martini, but taking it in a new direction. Clients are increasingly seeking something less sweet and more complex that blends everyday life, yet the excitement of a cocktail.”

11. Move Over Champagne, Non-Traditional Towers Are In

We all love a classic Champagne tower, but top caterers are predicting a shift. “While Champagne towers were all the rage this summer, 2023 party hosts are going to look for something a bit more personal. Espresso Martini towers are going to be the new go-to, for brides, grooms, and party hosts alike,” says Dolce & Gelato Catering Inc.

Craft Cartel Cocktail Catering notes that with cocktail towers, “The emphasis is being focused on elements that provide a creative spin on the classics and areas that make the experience more fun and entertaining.”

Not Your Typical Tower

12. Napkins & Menus Become One in the Same

This is one of the sleekest catering trends that we have seen. Printing your menu on guests’ napkins not only saves space on the table, but saves paper as well. Try graceful calligraphy, as pictured below, or any menu style that fits your event’s theme.

13. Give Guests a Cultural Culinary Experience

At PartySlate, we are honored to showcase age-old traditions of all cultures — be it cultural wedding ceremonies, receptions, or celebrations of other milestones. My House Events comments, saying, “I think something unique is that people are really wanting to highlight the cultures they are from, and focus on specific foods that represent their backgrounds. Customization is key. A lot of people share Latino heritage and are excited to provide guests with nostalgic food that reminds them of what made them.”

Food First Events & Catering Co. says, “We get asked all the time to create unique fusion menus that incorporate our couples’ multicultural backgrounds into their wedding or party menus. We love when we are asked to create fusion menus with bold flavors because it allows us to show off our chefs’ true talents of developing delicious and unique flavors that make guests and couples feel like they are getting a true culinary experience at their event. Our goal is to hear, ‘This is the best wedding food we have ever had.'”

How can I make my event stand out from others?

The best part of any party is the cuisine. Find a top caterer near you who can incorporate some of the latest trends in catering that your friends haven’t seen (or tasted) yet. There are some classic catering elements that never go out of style, and some that evolve into something even better.

For example, the Champagne tower has been a beloved trend at weddings and special events for years. Now, caterers and hosts are moving towards alternative towers. Rosé, espresso martinis, and Aperol Spritz towers are all the rage these days. You’re sure to excite your guests with an alternative tower filled with your cocktail of choice.

Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli Serves Up a Spectacular Showcase of the Newly-Renovated Crystal Plaza

Livingston, New Jersey’s Crystal Plaza — a venue with over a century of events under its belt — recently completed a series of stunning renovations. To celebrate the new and improved space, Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli created “Passport to Romance,” an unforgettable venue launch with mouthwatering cuisine from around the world. Thanks to the gorgeous backdrop, the expertise of JoAnn Gregoli, and an outstanding team of vendors, attendees were left with a night — and menu — that they’ll never forget.

We sat down with JoAnn Gregoli of Elegant Occasions to discuss details of the dazzling evening.

Tell us how Passport to Romance came to be. What was the inspiration and overall goal, and who were the attendees?

“Passport to Romance” was a launch to help celebrate the newly-renovated Crystal Plaza. This family-owned business has been in the Janoff family for over 105 years and is currently operated by the fourth generation of owners. We wanted to celebrate the partnership between Elegant Occasions and Crystal Plaza to help engage New Jersey event industry professionals — who were also able to learn about how PartySlate can help them gain exposure for their businesses.

The inspiration behind the “Passport to Romance” concept was that weddings are back, and they’re bigger and better than ever. I love to infuse the couple’s heritage into the celebration, and food is often the perfect way to accomplish that. We provided a gastronomic journey inspired by my travels around the world.

Who were your key partners, and what were their roles in making this a successful gathering?

We had so many wonderful partners that joined our village:

  • Of course, The Crystal Plaza took the entire vision to another level
  • Nada from Wedded Events literally took my concept and gave it life with her designs which paid homage to the countries that inspired the cuisine we served
  • Jordan Kahn Music Company was our entertainment partner who sparked an energy that only Jordan can bring to a party
  • Total Entertainment provided fun, interactive components and allowed guests to walk away with some wonderful gifts
  • Max and Maiden Inc. took my vision and created the printed visuals for the dance floor wrap provided by SHOUT!
  • André Maier Photography, our photo partner, captured every detail of the aesthetic that we brought to life
  • Geo Events Design decked the room with luxurious, all-black drapery to achieve a sexy vibe
  • We had to have Dolce & Gelato Catering Inc. serving their amazing gelato and espresso martinis in our Italy-inspired room
  • Balloon Design Studio created the most amazing balloon arch with a unique beauty that only they can accomplish
  • Fancy Cakes provided our delicious French patisserie
  • The highlight was The Cup Bearer who served wonderful drinks with flair

I cannot thank my team of partners enough. They were incredible to work with. I always say it takes a village to make an event a success, and I had an absolutely amazing village.

What’s one moment or experience that stood out to you about Passport To Romance?

So many things stood out about this amazing night. One truly special moment was an attendee’s comment about how New Jersey event professionals never expected an opportunity to attend an event of this level. So many people told me they thought it would be another boring networking gathering, but this was entirely different. From the minute they arrived to the minute they left, they were in awe.

I have never received so many emails and calls from event industry pros thanking me for making this happen. It makes my heart feel completely full. Now they all want me to do another one here in my home state of New York, and I have to think of ways to top myself.

Which vendors do I need for private dining in Los Angeles?

Before you begin to assemble your vendor list, you need to know which services your private dining venue will provide. Many restaurants will have an onsite events team to help facilitate your event.

Next steps? We always recommend hiring an event planner. Smaller celebrations like rehearsal dinners, baby showers, milestone birthday parties, and other celebrations with lower guest counts can still benefit from an experienced event planner. Hiring an event planner takes a huge part of the planning process (as well as day-of coordination) off your shoulders. This way, you can actually be present and enjoy your celebration.

While your needs may vary depending on the size of your event, we always recommend enlisting the services of the following vendors for an unforgettable celebration:

To take your event to the next level, we also suggest hiring an entertainment company. While you might not need a 12-piece band, your guests will appreciate engaging acts such as DJs, photo booths, immersive activities, and more. Lastly, consider hiring a videographer to capture the most important moments of your celebration. You’ll be happy to have video footage in addition to a beautiful event album.

Your Venue, Your Way: Montage Kapalua Bay

When choosing your event venue, it can be hard to envision the details of your dream event in that space. PartySlate is here to help. Read on to find real events held at Montage Kapalua Bay, a stunning Hawaiian resort venue. You’ll gain inspiration and begin to visualize how your event could look in this beautiful space.

We talked to the team at Montage Kapalua Bay to get insight into the flexible and customizable nature of this stunning Hawaiian venue. One of our favorite aspects of an event venue, especially if your locale is particularly beautiful, is an outdoor space – with weather-safe options of course. Lehua Swezey, Meetings & Events Manager at Montage Kapalua Bay, explains, “The best part about all of our outdoor spaces is that each event can be reimagined.”

She goes on to paint a visual of the stunning resort by saying, “Montage Kapalua Bay is located on the Island of Maui, perched on a cliff overlooking the crescent shaped Kapalua Bay. Comfortably spread across 24 acres, this oceanfront resort offers expansive views of the Pacific Ocean, the Islands of Lana’i, and Moloka’i.”

Montage Kapalua Bay Event Spaces

“Outdoor spaces at Montage Kapalua Bay include The Point Lawn and Namalu Lawn,” Swezey explains.

She adds, “The most unique and desired space is The Cliff House, a historic building perched on top of a cliff face that boasts 180-degree views of the Pacific with unforgettable sunsets. The Cliff House is the ideal locale for celebrations and events. The service is impeccable, with genuine care and a luxury touch that embody the ‘Aloha Spirit.’

“The Serenity Pool is also a favorite outdoor destination for our guests and is where our Sunset Luau is performed throughout the week.”

This venue is perfect for outdoor events, as Swezey notes, “The entire Point Lawn can be used for your wedding ceremony, reception, dance, and photoshoot.”

Style #1: Enchanting

This stunning and delicate event style takes the beauty of the venue’s natural surroundings and infuses it into every aspect of the event. From pastel-hued florals filling the tables to the clear-top tent covering the outdoor reception space, this event honored the venue’s beauty in every way. For a dreamy look after the sunset, string lights illuminated the ceiling of the wedding tent for a starry night feel.

Swezey notes that “all event spaces can accommodate any family gathering.” From weddings to destination birthday celebrations, Montage Kapalua Bay is a dream destination for your event.

photographer: The Grovers | planner: LVL Weddings & Events | venue: Montage Kapalua Bay

She continues, “All accommodations at Montage Kapalua Bay are residential-style, with multi-bedroom suites and grand layouts. Each room naturally connects guests attending the wedding. Guests are able to reserve a private luau in their residence or join our weekly public Sunset Luau.”

Style #2: Island-Inspired

This muted bohemian event style took elements such as floral crowns, woven lanterns, and wildflower centerpieces and blended them into an understated, yet breathtaking motif. The waves crashing behind the colorful floral arch helped set the serene tone for this wedding.

photographer: Wendy Laurel | planner: Unveiled Hawaii | venue: Montage Kapalua Bay

Swezey describes the luxe experience that you and your guests will have while staying onsite: “The resort showcases the island lifestyle with a multi-tiered lagoon pool which cascades down the center of the resort – four restaurants and bars, over 50,000-square-feet of outdoor event space, and an intimate room for indoor meetings and functions.

“The 40,000-square-foot Spa Montage harnesses the essence of Hawaii with an exceptional palette of spa therapies, beauty treatments, and wellness offerings inspired by the tropical surroundings.”

Style #3: Tropical Elegance

This tropical event style infused a boho style with tropical elements to create the perfect affair filled with palm fronds and pops of bright color. This stylish wedding, held on the breathtaking Point Lawn, featured one of our favorite examples of unique place cards.

photographer: Matias Ezcurra Photography | planner: Unveiled Hawaii | venue: Montage Kapalua Bay

Your guests will love their resort stay (and the wow-worthy fare) as well. “Dining venues range from the upscale Cane & Canoe, to the casual dinner setting at The Hideaway, to the grab-and-go Mahana Market,” explains Swezey. Also enjoy “the full-service Spa Montage, historic Cliff House, neighboring two championship golf courses, tennis courts, and zip-lines.

“A cultural ambassador will guide you through the rich history of the islands through arts and crafts, music, dance and talk story sessions. Enhance the day with daily rituals such as koi fish feeding, hikes, fitness classes, children’s programs and more. Enjoy a series of special events in the area throughout the year, including Kapalua Wine & Food Festival, the PGA Sentry Tournament of Champions, and Champagne Hale at Cliff House.”

Swezey speaks of the essence of the resort by saying, “Here, you will feel embraced by genuine island hospitality and culture. It is truly the perfect setting for multi-generational family vacations, secluded getaways, executive retreats, weddings, or any special occasion celebration.”

MaryAnn Blanchard, Director of Meetings & Events at Montage Kapalua Bay states, “This property is a beautiful canvas for the wedding or event of your dreams. We partner with an extensive list of expert planners and vendors who work hard to understand and execute the vision of each of our clients. Additionally, our talented team of chefs will go beyond your expectations to create an exceptional culinary experience for you and your guests. An event here is truly extraordinary.”

From seaside outdoor spaces to bright and lively indoor spaces, your Montage Kapalua Bay event will be everything you dreamed, and more.

17 Stylish Baby Shower Venues in Houston to Impress Guests

Planning a baby shower in Houston starts with finding the right venue. We reached out to Courtney Paddock, Founder and Creative Director of Little Coterie, to learn more about some of Houston’s best baby shower hot spots. As an experienced Houston event planner, Paddock knows what to prioritize in a venue space.

“When I think of the best baby shower venues, rooms with large windows are a must,” she tells us. “Regardless of the baby’s gender, the color palette is usually pastel, which is perfectly complemented by tons of natural light.” She goes on to say, “The experience should feel airy, delicate, and joyful for the parent-to-be and guests. Keep the food and drinks light to match the feel. When in doubt, keep it light!”

19 Thanksgiving Ideas You’ll Thank Us For

We all have Thanksgiving traditions, whether it’s a dish that everyone looks forward to all year long or Grandpa’s speech that kicks off the meal. When it comes to a holiday so steeped in custom, friends and family know exactly what to expect when they arrive on your doorstep. That’s comforting — if a bit boring.

Why not add some new traditions to surprise and delight your guests? We’ve got 19 Thanksgiving ideas that will make your guests give thanks that they’re at your holiday gathering. From creative table layouts to making your loved ones feel good, we’ve found the best ideas from real Thanksgiving (and Friendsgiving) gatherings. Read on to find some new ways to host this age-old celebration.

San Francisco, CA

Grand entrances aren’t just for weddings. This Friendsgiving celebration warmly welcomed — through a floral-flanked entrance — 50 women for networking and support during the hectic holiday season. We love how a beautiful entryway sets the tone for an even more beautiful gathering.

Paradise Valley, AZ

Thanksgiving happens on the fourth Thursday of each November — that we can count on. Far less predictable is the weather, which can range from sunny and crisp to overcast and soggy. We love a solid bad weather backup plan that’s also beautiful, and this clear tent protects guests while making magic with string lights and rustic wood chandeliers.

Home isn’t the only place that the heart is — the love is wherever you and your friends and family are. Consider hosting your warm and welcoming Thanksgiving at a special spot, like a hotel, restaurant, or other spot that holds meaning. Bonus: let the professionals make the meal and serve it so you can really relax and enjoy the holiday.

Even if you’re celebrating in a warmer climate, you can infuse your Thanksgiving décor with traditional fall hues. We adore how this gathering brought in colorful foliage with autumn trees and branches to both the backyard and indoor settings.

Instead of separate tables, consider having all guests face each other by arranging seating more creatively. We adore how this rustic-chic Thanksgiving dinner keeps the centerpieces low and the conversation flowing.

Consider your guests: Who hasn’t seen each other in a while? Who might have something in common? Create interesting conversation with assigned seats — and do it beautifully with creative place cards. We love how these place cards remind guests they are loved, while also creating a sensory experience with dried herbs and orange slices.

We love the idea of seating guests with words of gratefulness. The sweet signage at this Thanksgiving soirée reminds friends and family (in clever fashion) that the host is happy to be spending the holidays with them.

Velvet manages to be both glamorous and cozy, the perfect mix for a fall celebration. We adore how this Thanksgiving gathering brought velvet to the tabletops in multiple vibrant hues on mini pumpkins and as wraps for the terra cotta pots. We also appreciate the sustainability of utilizing plants as décor — you can even allow guests to take them home afterwards.

Whether it’s your tablecloth, runner, or napkins, table linen offers the perfect opportunity to infuse interesting patterns into your Thanksgiving décor. We like how this black-and-white checked table runner brings a modern touch to vintage pink florals and greenery.

There’s no need to ensure you have enough matching plates, napkins, and more for guests. In fact, place settings are much more interesting when mixed and matched. We love how this Thanksgiving tablescape varies florals, linen texture and hues, as well as the napkin holders and even the dishes to stunningly gorgeous effect.

After looking at thousands of celebratory photos, one thing is clear — glasses don’t need to be, well, clear. We adore how hued glassware can coordinate with table décor for a cohesive vibe. The smoky wine goblets at this Thanksgiving gathering made a modern statement.

We’ve talked about how every element on your table creates an impact — from glassware and dishes to linen and florals. But we want to remind you that candles can do more than add a dreamy vibe; they can bring vibrant color, as well. We love how these hobnail glass votives infuse jewel tones into the tablescape.

Sure, you can spend the afternoon and evening keeping your guests’ goblets full, but what a treat for you and your friends and family to be pampered by expertly-mixed sips. Setting up a bar and a mixologist not only frees your time, but make a Thanksgiving dinner feel extra special. While you’re at it, offer a signature cocktail—something with cranberries, maybe?

A descriptive menu allows guests to eagerly anticipate the delectable meal to come. While you’re at it, why not get creative with your menu and place it in an unexpected place? We like the cleverness of this menu printed on the bread sleeve, meaning guests are greeted with their roll and highlights of the meal to come at the same time.

Gluten-free? Vegan? Lactose-intolerant? Cool chalkboard-like signage keeps guests safe while they graze on your holiday fare. The menu for this Thanksgiving gathering — including roasted root vegetables, marinated Kalamata olives, and warm New England-style seafood chowder — makes us wish we were invited.

Turkey represents tradition, sure, but you can impress guests with additional offerings that wow. We appreciate the extensive menu at this beautiful backyard Thanksgiving gathering, as it includes crab legs and tuna tartare, lobster, and morebringing a coastal vibe to the fall table.

If you focus your fare on seasonally-available produce, you’ll quite naturally “taste the rainbow” (thanks, Skittles). Consider how your Thanksgiving menu items will complement each other on the plate to engage the senses — remember we also “eat” with our eyes.

This autumn take on Tic-Tac-Toe has us oohing and aahing. What a clever take on an outdoor activity from organic, seasonal materials. We imagine kids and adults alike rearranging these pumpkins into winning order.

Of course, guests will naturally gather around the table for good food and conversation; but a great host ensures there are additional communal areas. We like how this Canadian Thanksgiving offers groupings of couches and chairs on the lawn (ah, LA in November) for friends and family to mix and mingle.

People Also Ask…

What are some Thanksgiving day traditions?

Some popular Thanksgiving traditions include: having everyone share what they’re grateful for, breaking the wishbone for luck, watching a parade and/or football, participating in a run (or “turkey trot”), and more.

We also appreciate love when hosts coordinate a holiday giveback — whether that means donating to a food bank, inviting lone neighbors to join your festivities, or serving at a soup kitchen.

How can I start planning my Thanksgiving gathering?

There’s no question that hosting a large group — even comprised of your most beloved friends and family — can be stressful. We always suggest choosing the tasks you find most intimidating or challenging and outsourcing them to professionals.

Hire an event planner to coordinate the guests, timeline, and other vendors. Choose a décor and floral company to create a beautiful entrance and tablescape. Find rentals in your area for additional tables, dishes, coordinating chairs, lounge areas, and linen. Hire a photographer to not only capture the day, but for posed portraits while your loved ones are all together.

And, of course, one of the bigger jobs of the day, feeding your brood, can be given to a top caterer. A skilled catering team will work with you to plan a menu of fare that wows while accommodating all of the dietary preferences and restrictions of the group, allowing you to relax and enjoy the holiday.
