When COVID-19 hit, the future of upcoming graduations, proms, birthdays, baby showers, bridal showers, weddings, and more milestones were uncertain — that is, until people’s creativity and urge to gather for special events paved the way for countless safe celebration solutions.
There are many ways to minimize risks at events on top of implementing social-distancing. The experts from YSD Events recommend “bringing in a concierge medical team to test guests as they arrive…Set up a testing ‘arrival lounge’ where guests are greeted by medical professionals and they are given a cocktail and a rapid test.” Regardless of what you’re able to bring to your event in terms of safety precautions, Brad and Justin from YSD believe “everyone should do what makes them most comfortable.”
Coming together while staying apart isn’t as difficult as you may think. These 34 social distancing parties, for birthdays, weddings, showers, and more prove nothing is impossible — and that following the CDC guidelines can result in the most creative, meaningful moments.

When this mom-to-be’s traditional baby shower was halted by COVID-19, she found a way to safely celebrate without cutting down her guest list. This is the most classy drive-by party we’ve seen included live music — and live animals — plus, a gorgeous pastel balloon arch to top it all off. This celebration proves that social distancing baby showers can be safe and chic.

An Event to Tie-Dye For
Harrison, New York
The year 2020 has been full of both the re-emergence of tie-dye and the brand-new practice of social distancing — and that’s exactly what inspired this backyard gender reveal. We’re loving every detail from the provided tie-dye masks to the gorgeous blue and pink cake with a special surprise inside.
Friends and family of this mom-to-be briefly parked, posed for photos, then drove off to leave room for the next group of guests at her safety-first social distancing baby shower. The fiesta-inspired occasion incorporated vibrant colors and on-theme décor to add to the front yard fun — plus, we can’t help but highlight the adorable avocado balloon enhancing the festive photo op.

Guests of this birthday boy had the chance to pose with him while maintaining social distance, thanks to his paper cutout doppelganger. Attendees also loved the party’s bar on wheels, personalized cookies, and comfy boho-inspired lounge area.
An ordinary garage door got an upgrade with a crescent-moon balloon installation, glittering gold banner, and greenery-lined dessert table. Individually-wrapped party favors were the perfect addition to this 50th social distancing birthday party — as was the sunny, Southern California climate.
Small in size, grand in detail — this garden-inspired social distancing birthday party put a pastel spin on an organic theme. Intricate butterfly table details and textured sky blue linens added to the calming, yet festive, atmosphere. Birthday candles lined the center table — rather than the cake itself — to ensure no germs were spread onto the dessert in the making of the birthday girl’s wish.
This birthday’s small guest list — and we’re not referring to the adorable tiny attendees — offered the perfect way to celebrate at home during quarantine. A chalk art-covered driveway, funky balloon installations, and rainbow paper flower wall ensured the birthday girl felt special as she entered double digits.
Passed appetizers have never looked so elegant — or perfect for social distancing. Guests enjoyed gourmet cuisine with the most gorgeous, germ-free presentations at this intimate backyard birthday party — while also admiring a picture-perfect, sunflower-lined tablescape.
Guests were greeted by a brightly-hued balloon installation and clever, colorful insulated cups at this backyard birthday. Guests were delighted by live music, individually-boxed sushi, personal cakes, and incredible social distancing party seating and details.
This boho summer party has us ready to celebrate. With spaced-out seating, an oversized outdoor tent, and a breezy waterfront location, the soirée took CDC gathering recommendations — and made them look chic.
This cheeky poolside party transformed the birthday girl’s backyard into an outdoor — and socially distanced — club. Perfectly groomed turf allowed lots of room for distanced dancing — and a place to admire the event’s floating balloon installation among other décor. A hot pink LED-lit DJ booth pumped up the party, while individually-portioned indulgences from popcorn cups to plated fries and ketchup kept guests overly satisfied at this social distancing birthday party.
This guest of honor brought the Amalfi Coast to Chicago’s Gold Coast when COVID-19 prevented a planned 50th birthday trip to Italy. Gorgeous Sahara, orange, and blush rose bouquets were complimented by corresponding floral-patterned linens and rustic-chic sanitation stations.
This birthday girl’s love for the Hamptons was brought to the Midwest with a bright pink and green palette, boxwood mocktail bars, and of course, an East Coast-chic photo op. While the backyard offered plated food and pool floats, the front yard’s garage was transformed into a spacious dance floor with glistening globe lights and swoon-worthy ceiling décor.
When quarantine ended, this intimate party celebrated each family member’s missed milestone — including a teenage birthday, Mother’s Day, Easter, and more. Oversized board games such as Connect Four and Jenga offered al fresco lawn fun for the small guest list.

Showered With Love — and Boho Balloons
Southlake, Texas
This at-home event is inspiring all of our future pandemic parties to come. Individual charcuterie boards replaced grazing tables, salad bars were swapped for veggie-filled mason jars, and only three seats to every table allowed this bridal bash to offer safe solutions for fun festivities. The chic — and spacious — outdoor lounge area was designed with the bride’s favorite retail store in mind, Anthropologie, adding an even more personal touch to such a special celebration. This is one of our favorite social distancing parties of all time.

There’s No Place Like Home — For an Epic Bat Mitzvah
Sophia’s Bat Mitzvah plans were turned upside down when COVID-19 rocked the world — but that didn’t stop her from finally celebrating her coming of age. A Bat Mitzvah service Zoom was followed by a family-only dinner in their gorgeously decorated Los Angeles backyard. After dining, Sophia’s friends and relatives joined the fun with a professionally DJed dance party in the blocked off neighborhood street.
This event would have been one of our favorite graduation celebrations, with or without CDC requirements. An epic front yard balloon installation, a one-of-a-kind photo op — we’re talking blown up headshots of the guest of honor — and completely-custom desserts made this party one for the yearbooks.

Guests dined al fresco under chic bistro lights at this intimate graduation party. Vibrant floral arrangements, balloon installations, and rainbow lantern-lined walkways made this the fiesta of the year — not to mention the live mariachi band performance. The backyard celebration was made safe with spread out dining chairs so attendees could safely enjoy their meal when the masks came off.

Add a Degree of Surprise
Redmond, Washington
This high school graduate was surprised by her family and friends with a drive-by parade to celebrate her accomplishments. Distanced yearbook signings and favor grabbings were followed by a family-only dinner on sparkling black table linens, complemented by chic black and white balloon installations and of course, 2020 tassel-adorned menus. Playful signage and confetti cannons left plenty of opportunities for fun photos at this intimate event.
One of the first social-distanced event ideas to hit PartySlate after COVID-19 was this graduation’s total driveway transformation. The Los Angeles event took guests to the circus with a sophisticated-chic, black and white party palette. Live music, gorgeous matte balloon installations, baby’s breath-adorned photo ops, clever signage, and 2020 marquee lights were just a few of the elements that made us want to throw our own driveway celebration.
photo courtesy of & planner: Eventure/Debbie Tucker | décor: Epic Events | venue: Union League Club of Chicago | invitations: I Made This! | entertainment: Clowning Around
This Chicago graduation celebration doubled as a watch party for the first Cubs game of the season. Safety protocols from mask wearing to sanitizing allowed for the guest of honor and her friends to gather at an elegant indoor-outdoor venue. A leather bracelet-making station added to the fun as guests enjoyed each other’s company.
COVID-19 cancelled many milestones, but this family wasn’t going to let their daughter’s senior prom be one of them. Intimate, translucent tents allowed couples to dine safely and separately, while still enjoying “A Night Under the Stars.” We can’t help but wish our prom was this thoughtful and romantic.
Strike a pose — this balloon-backed marquee signage would serve as an epic photo op under any circumstance. We love how the driveway party allowed one couple to enjoy their prom night despite nationwide cancellations. Live music, an adorable slow dance, and the support of socially-distanced neighbors helped keep the tradition alive for these high school sweethearts — in the safest possible way.
Sweeping hilltop views, spaced out ceremony seating, and a warm fall day made this Southern California wedding pure magic. Social-distancing precautions were maintained throughout the night, with dome-covered cocktail bites (one of our favorite party catering trends for 2021), spacious al fresco dining, and a small — but very special — guest list.
This couple said goodbye to 2020 and hello to married life with a tropical-glam wedding. The event’s safety precautions included on-site COVID-19 testing, a breezy backyard setting, and a scaled-down guest list. The edgy celebration introduced us to the chicest use of tropical palms, vibrant greenery, and dazzling al fresco lighting.
This glam indoor wedding followed the rules with intimate dining tables spaced 6+ feet apart, as well as custom masks and an incredibly spacious venue. The bride and groom achieved their dream wedding with the help of bold pink uplighting, vibrant floral arrangements, and energizing music.
Like so many couples, these brides had their summer wedding postponed due to the pandemic. With the help of their event team, they hosted a drive-in ceremony, where loved ones could witness an exchange of vows from their respective vehicles. The summer soirée was made better by hand-dipped ice cream, which guests could hop out of their cars to retrieve.
These grooms decided to have an intimate, in-person wedding day, while allowing their grander guest list to witness virtually. With a screen projecting the faces of those tuned in, and an absolutely stunning floral-filled backdrop, they said “I Do” in the most special love-filled setting.

Sanitize & Smile for This Frontline Worker
New Haven, Connecticut
This bride was a frontline worker battling COVID-19 daily. When the pandemic first struck, she thought she would have to call off her 200-person wedding, which was nearly two years in the making. Enter celebrity event planner David Tutera and the team at PartySlate, who stepped in to bring a backyard ceremony to life with her nearest and dearest. Read more about this deserving duo’s day here.
Nothing was going to stop this bride and groom’s loved ones from attending their summer nuptials. The picturesque, residential wedding allowed guests to keep their distance on a grand, manicured lawn — all while enjoying unobstructed, sparkling lake views.
We could toast to all aspects of this New Year’s Eve wedding (and not just because it helped ring in 2021). The Beverly Hills-based couple celebrated with their closest friends and family in a secret garden-inspired setting. Guests sat at social-distanced tables as the bride walked down the aisle, and remained in their spaced-out spots for a post-ceremony boxed meal, virtual toasts, and more.
Some of our favorite wedding trends — eclectic wedding aisle rugs and luxe outdoor lounges, to be exact — were brought to life at this small, rooftop wedding. Guests stayed 6-feet apart from the comfort of their sleek velvet coaches as the bride and groom exchanged their vows.

No Sunday Scaries at This Celebration
Rancho Cucamonga, California
This bride and groom romantically exchanged vows in private, “and desperately wanted to find a way to safely celebrate with their closest friends and family.” They decided on a Sunday-chic BBQ, for which the team at For Your Party were able to “integrate our customized disposable face masks into the equation to ensure that instead of germs, only love and smiles were spread.”
This couple managed to make their small-scale wedding over-the-top. With a stunning suspended floral installation, dramatic lighting, and professional streaming, they said “I Do” in front of both an in-person and virtual guest list. Their ceremony was followed by a reception at which guests near and far could toast the bride and groom through Zoom.

Virtual events aren’t new; anyone who has spent the last eight months meeting via Zoom, ClickMeeting, Google Hangouts, and more (which is everyone) can tell you that gathering virtually has become a necessity. Health and safety concerns surrounding travel and large gatherings has created the need for seamless and engaging virtual experiences.
We’re not talking about your Tuesday morning team meeting, but rather gatherings and celebrations that create novel opportunities for interaction and that leverage technology to foster relationships — whether between a corporation and its key stakeholders, a couple and their wedding guests, a milestone birthday celebrant or a Bar or Bat Mitzvah child and his or her family and friends.
Times like these call for creative solutions; we spoke with top event experts who are pioneering new ways to connect from a distance. They gave us their advice and virtual event ideas that your attendees will remember long after.
When planning a virtual event, ask yourself, “What do you want to get out of this event? What do you want your attendees, guests, partners, sponsors, donors, staff to walk away with?” says Becca Bloom, Owner and Event Producer at BB Events in San Francisco. “These questions are important when developing the program and content so that you can make thoughtful, purposeful decisions on the elements that you want to incorporate.”
Adam McCarthy, Managing Director of BlackOak Technical Productions in Chicago, adds to those questions: “What can you as a host do better for your audience than anyone else? Why would anyone choose to attend this and stay engaged for the whole time? If you have a lot of great answers, then you have a really strong event proposition.”
McCarthy notes the competition for engagement at virtual events is much greater than at live events — with family interruptions, outside noise, phones ringing, dogs barking, and so on. He suggests that you ask these questions early on in the planning process to ensure that you’ll capture and keep your attendees’ attention.
Of course, your responses will vary if depending on the type of gathering you’re planning, whether it’s a social celebration (a wedding, shower, anniversary, birthday, and more), a fundraiser, or a corporate event. The goal for your event migh vary from “have fun and connect with loved ones” or “create awareness for a worthy cause” to “introduce a new product” or “create team cohesiveness.”
Whatever your reason for gathering, let it guide you during the following steps and virtual event ideas.
First, a note about language: When we talk about virtual events, often the terms shift from “guests” to “audience.” Traditionally, virtual events have often been one-way communication — information delivered from one group to another.
Today’s virtual gatherings are much wider in scope with unprecedented opportunities for interaction and engagement. We will use “guests” here to signal the current shift in thinking toward more inclusivity of attendees and support the concept that you are an event host.
When it comes to creating the guest list, Bloom from BB Events asks, “Who will be attending the event and where will they be tuning in from? What are their expectations? It’s important to understand…so you can craft a program and an experience that caters to your guests’ needs and expectations.”
For example, are you hoping to create an opportunity for large group interactions, as well as more intimate connections? Principal and Creative Director at Atelier Events, LLC in Washington D.C., Deborah Lesser, says, “Be prepared to segment if individuals will be invited to different (sub)events.”
A large corporate group meeting might evolve into smaller breakout discussions. Whereas for a social event, there might be an opportunity for like groups to gather as they naturally would at tables at a live celebration.
Priyan Chandraratna, Creative Director for Alfred House Productions in Los Angeles, recently shared the story of a 400-person, multi-day Indian wedding; the celebration shifted to a 10-person intimate Hindu ceremony that was live-streamed. The planner says, “The reception was an elegant dinner for the couple and their parents with a virtual component in the form of breakout rooms to allow the couple to visit with smaller cohesive groups across time zones like they would have made table visits.”
Before you can line up the perfect event team, you’ll need to fully understand your vision for your event. “Draft a plan for your virtual event by walking through the event experience…what format will it be? Will guests participate or just listen and watch?” asks Bloom from BB Events. She urges hosts to consider what guests will see and experience before forging ahead with their virtual event ideas.
Your virtual event vision and plan for guest interaction will guide you in choosing your partner team, including your virtual event planner. Bloom from BB Events says, “Many of the same roles you would have for in-person events will apply here. For example, event producer, stage manager, speaker manager, guest manager, sponsorship manager, marketing/branding manager. But the main difference will be a boost in technical and web support.”
For a social celebration, consider a planner to coordinate all of the roles, plus décor options, potential entertainment, and catering, in addition to a tech support team. A corporate gathering might necessitate the need for a studio appropriate for live broadcasting (more on that topic below).

JOWY Productions, event planner based in Los Angeles, specializes in international full-service event design for in-person and virtual events that include social media engagement, themed décor, branded gift bags, digital invitations, and a “sense of solidarity” during these challenging times.
Atelier Events, LLC, event planner based in Washington, D.C., is pioneering ideas for hybrid celebrations that feature small in-person gatherings with larger groups of virtual attendees, “hub-and-spoke” events where smaller live elements happen simultaneously in different locations, and virtual social and nonprofit gatherings.
Kis(cubed) Events, event planner based in Atlanta, is hyper-focused on creative ways to tell a story utilizing visual elements — which is a natural partner for virtual events where you need to anchor attendees’ attention and engage their minds and senses.
Alfred House Productions, event planner based in Los Angeles, has been producing seamless “socially-distanced soirées” that feature food and beverage components (like high-tea bento boxes and specialty cocktails), fun virtual hosts (think drag queens, comedians, and singers), and engaging activities (including fun quizzes, trivia, cake decorating, and family feud).
Ivy Hill Entertainment, entertainment company based in Oakland, California, has pioneered a “Be There” program for virtual weddings that allows you to broadcast your vows from any venue, livestream your entire celebration, dance together with a virtual DJ, and have your entire affair emceed by a professional host; your virtual guests will love party perks like custom cocktail recipes, virtual photo booths, virtual dinner tables, and more.
Mindy Weiss Party Consultants, event planner based in Los Angeles, is taking her years of experience creating buzzed-about celebrations for celebrities and tastemakers and applying it to the realm of virtual events for creative and fun celebrations (that remain Instagram-worthy).
Lesser from Atelier Events urges hosts to “think carefully about the quality and interactive/production experience; the type of platform that you might use for personal interactions and business meetings (i.e., Zoom) may not be best suited for the needs of your virtual event.” McCarthy from BlackOak concurs, saying, “One of the keys in talking about platform selection is to view the process as similar to venue selection for an in-person event. Even the same client doing the same event each year, might choose a different venue. There are countless platforms out there; considering only one platform for every type of event is the same as saying one venue is perfect for every type of event.”
When it comes to choosing between A/V and production services, Bloom from BB Events suggests, “There are many types of platforms that each offer something different, so it will depend on the type of event and experience you are looking to deliver. Take the format and your event concept…and get various quotes from A/V companies to see who is the best fit. Understand their services and capabilities and don’t be afraid to ask questions. Be sure you are each on the same page with what you’ll be managing.” She also notes that it’s important to keep in mind how you want guests to participate.
McCarthy explains the range of platform possibilities: “At one end, we have the option of the host broadcasting to guests (think network television), then next we have live-streaming platforms with simple engagement — like Q&A, polls and maybe an attendee list (Vimeo and Zoom might fall here) — then next we will see virtual meeting and conference solutions — more advanced ways to interact and engage, like the ability to network and engage attendee to attendee not just attendee to host. You can also get social media interaction, e-commerce interaction (i.e., a brand selling a product). Then maybe we start looking at different forms, richer ways to engage attendees with third-party forms and add-ons and this takes us to the most exciting sphere of virtual platforms: fully custom.”
Bloom also suggests potentially upgrading the experience by shifting funds planned for elements of live events like lighting, rentals, and more. She also notes that “the A/V company should be able to provide professional equipment like microphones and cameras should presenters need them.” You will need a top-notch team to turn your virtual event ideas into reality.

BlackOak Technical Productions in Chicago is able to create a custom virtual experience from scratch. This “design-focused, human-friendly” tech production company manages the full-scope strategy, build, and delivery for an event that is capable of creating those organic, serendipitous connections that in-person gatherings foster.
Moonlight Studios in Chicago features a live broadcasting studio through their partnership with Sound Investments. The two event powerhouses have collaborated to create a facility that features an LED-wall set that can be transformed to resemble anything from a newsroom to the Taj Mahal; the studio also allows presenters to easily engage with their at-home guests.
Blueprint Studios, based in San Francisco with showrooms in Los Angeles and Las Vegas, offers experienced designers applying their in-person event know-how to create custom interactive virtual environments that keep attendees fully engaged (through a virtual event platform solution or their 360° virtual exploration space).
LEVY|NYC in New York is a lighting and A/V company that is offering use of their studio for corporate, non-profit, and other events to elevate streaming. They’re also offering consultation services to guide clients as to which equipment they could use at home to enhance video productio
Engagement between the hosts and guests, plus guests with each other, is key to making the experience memorable. Lesser from Atelier Events says, “Think about the before and after, as well as the event itself.”
She suggests engaging guests in the moments leading up to an event with, for example, a short teaser video or the delivery of a welcome kit and adds, “Make it easy for guests to engage and respond leading up to, during, and after the event.”
Arielle Dukofsky, Content Marketing Specialist for Interactive Entertainment Group, says that having all guests present on video are keys to keeping guests engaged. Another way this team increases engagement is with a high level of customization.
“We can host a trivia game with custom questions or a ‘Night at the Races’ with prominent branding and sponsor placement,” says Dukofsky. She also notes that some games, like bingo or jeopardy, allow participants to vote and interact right from their phones or other smart devices in addition to being engaged via video. “We also encourage our clients to offer prizes as a fun incentive that ultimately increases engagement,” Dukofsky adds.
Co-Founder and Owner of JOWY Productions in Los Angeles, Sarah Lowy, reminds us not to forget about the details. “Special touches will make any event stand apart from the rest. Capitalize on what’s most personal [about the client or experience] and build from there. Conversation and engagement will follow. You want guests saying, ‘That was so them.’”

When hosting in-person events, entertainment is always a core consideration, and virtual events are no exception. In fact, since (as noted above) virtual events are vying with more distractions than traditional celebrations, entertainment may be even more vital.
Ken Arlen of Arlen Music Productions in Chicago has really enjoyed jumping into the virtual entertainment world over the past year. “For our virtual galas and special events, I recommend opening with a very high energy and fun performance and ending with a customized and heartfelt inspirational performance to galvanize your message. Any virtual event experience will be enhanced 100% with music or entertainment!”
Lowy from JOWY Productions says, “Surprise entertainment on Zoom calls have been fun — whether it’s your child’s favorite musical act or your best friend’s celebrity crush, many talents…are available and accessible. Talent agencies are also offering musical acts to perform virtually which can be a big treat for everyone to enjoy ‘together.’”
Meanwhile, Alfred House Productions has been planning virtual milestone celebrations with a drag queen hostess who keeps guests engaged, laughing, and dancing — like at a recent disco-themed virtual 60th birthday, changing personas (and clothes and makeup) to perform as luminaries like Donna Summer and Abba.
Harlan Ellis, Senior Event Producer with Hank Lane Music, says, “We’ve been evolving our services to incorporate more virtual entertainment options to engage guests.” For example, after hiring Hank Lane Music to perform at their wedding, one couple asked them to entertain for their one-year-old’s virtual birthday. “The same bandleader and singer from their wedding ‘Zoomed’ into their home and performed a few songs.” The team is also working on a Hamptons virtual charity event that will combine live performances with DJ-created playlists.
We love all of these clever virtual event ideas that offer options that wouldn’t be affordable or potentially feasible for live gatherings.

Arlen Music Productions, entertainment company based in Chicago, offers a wide range of customized virtual entertainment experiences — from inspirational and uplifting performances for galas to high energy and fun acts for any special event. Consider their customized cameo mini performances with one or two musicians up to full orchestra and choirs or their “zoom with celebrities” that will have guests talking.
Curated Entertainment, entertainment company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, are corporate entertainers and emcees for virtual, hybrid, and in-person events. This performing duo will don any kind of costume and persona to engage your guests in meaningful and memorable activities like magic, singing, mysteries, and more.
Hank Lane Music, entertainment company based in New York, has been actively engaging with virtual entertainment solutions (providing technical expertise as well) — from creating playlists for virtual events and staging live performances to staging interactive game shows and compiling video messages for guests to enjoy from their homes.
EastCoast Entertainment, entertainment company based in Palm Beach, has been producing a variety of virtual events with entertainers ranging from emcees and auctioneers to live music and comedians.
Rachel Dalton, entertainment company based in New York, has been getting requests for virtual activities (and fulfilling dream experiences) like dance lessons with entertainer JLo, cooking classes with chef Bobby Flay, and private dinners catered by celebrities and top chefs.
There’s something wonderful about sharing a meal with friends, old and new, and that doesn’t need to be lost in the transition to a virtual medium. Lowy from JOWY Productions urges hosts to “consider a delivery for everyone to share together…a beautiful, thoughtful meal and/or a drink kit and pre-dinner spread.” For example, Lowy suggests a delicious delivery of lox and bagels to all guests of a virtual Bar Mitzvah celebration to serve as a Kiddush luncheon or meal.
Lesser from Atelier Events notes that caterers are getting very creative and that many are now offering pickup and delivery, with interesting packaging that makes for a “special experience” for guests. She says that offering individual catering for a virtual event has different logistical considerations and that hosts and planners should work closely with their caterer to anticipate possible complications and solutions.
Resources
CxRA, caterer in New York, has begun offering individual deliveries for full meals as well as beverage pairings and cocktail offerings. Additionally, they are able to provide virtual culinary classes with delivery of ingredients before walking guests through fun preparation in real time.
Marcia Selden Catering & Events, caterer in New York, has been offering innovative menus for virtual gatherings — including larger-scale galas — with customized boxes of elevated snacks (like spiced nuts and truffled popcorn), individual servings of Champagne, and options for full three-course meals.
Just like you create back-up plans for in-person gatherings (for example, a tent or second location for a potentially rained-out garden wedding), you should spell out alternatives for your virtual event. “Determine steps you will take if things go wrong — and who will manage these steps,” says Bloom from BB Events. She offers examples like poor sound or video, attendees with how-to questions, inappropriate comments/questions from attendees, cybersecurity, and more.
It’s important to line up a knowledgeable team to produce a fun and flawless gathering. Part of that preparation should include rehearsals for large events. Especially when there’s technology involved, it’s important to ensure that all presenters, entertainers, and attendees have the knowledge and skills needed to join and interact. A script and run-of-show outline are helpful here.
Bloom suggests, “Walk through the entire event with your team, speakers, and any other key players as if it were live to ensure that everyone understands their roles, transitions, cues, and the technicalities of the platform.” She also advises establishing a communication platform on the back-end (think texts, chats, or other quick and easy methods) for the team and the A/V company, speakers, or entertainers.
An advantage of a virtual event is having the electronic means to stay engaged with guests after the gathering has ended. Don’t miss the opportunity to send out thank-you emails, an event recap, or other materials that guests might enjoy and appreciate.
Ask for a physical address for an even more inspired and memorable touch. Lesser from Atelier Events suggests a “take-away gift” delivered afterwards.

Eating delicious cuisine just got a whole lot easier. While parties and milestone events slowly return, six of Los Angeles’s top caterers are continuing to reinvent the notion of at-home fine dining with their exclusive catering menus for pickup or delivery.
Without a doubt, COVID-19 forced caterers to think outside the box and reimagine their offerings. As 24 Carrots Catering and Events shared in the early stages of the pandemic, “In a time like this, we find the best in us, and the best in each other . . . How we do it is a little different for now, but with the help of amazing clients and wonderful community, we’re still delivering what 24 Carrots is known for – phenomenal food and exceptional service.”
In addition to providing an online market place, Good Gracious! Events met the times by providing over 5,000 meals per week to the Children’s Hospital of LA. As they shared on their website, “Our culinary team has come together to make this happen curating delicious, healthy, and freshly prepared lunch and dinner for the hospital staff, doctors, and nurses.”
Sourced Craft Cocktails brought the work-time happy hour back by hosting a streamed experience where employees could order the cocktails of their choice and have them delivered to their homes. Sourced Craft Cocktails shared, “This program benefits local bartenders by putting them to work delivering your cocktails across NYC, Austin, Dallas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles, and 5% of each order goes to the US Bartenders Guild relief fund to help support bartenders on a national scale.”
Those words still ring true today, even as we are evolving past lockdown. And while we are happy that we aren’t in the same restrictive position we were then, we are still loving all of the at-home fine dining options still available to us.
So whether you put on a cocktail dress for a virtual Zoom dinner party with friends — or don a pair of comfy pajamas for a gourmet-take on the traditional TV dinner — check out these six LA catering companies. It’s not every day that you get to eat like you’re at a Black-Tie event.

Eating delicious cuisine just got a whole lot easier. While parties and milestone events slowly return (and outdoor dining remains a blustery affair), 8 of New York City’s top caterers are offering their exclusive catering menus for pickup or delivery.
Staring in April, Wafels & Dinges began adapting to the ‘new normal’ by offering normally-catered meals to families. Shaivi, Director of Sukhadia Caterers, told us, “The recent situation has pushed us to come up with creative ideas. We are doing all of this by staying safe, keeping our staff safe, and exercising as much caution as possible.” Meanwhile, President Andrea Correale of Elegant Affairs discovered new ways to assist the community with a Stay-At-Home Market offering the finest quality groceries.
Some catering companies even found ways to bring their meals to those one front lines. Kayla Castellano, Senior Events Sales Manager of CxRA, told us how their chefs are busy preparing meals for city healthcare workers. As one nurse said, “I am obsessed with everything you’ve given us . . . Food is so important and I am SO grateful for all of the vegetables and nutrition you are giving us, especially at a time when we’re all trying to stay healthy.” Those words still ring true today, even as we are evolving past lockdown.
While we are happy that we aren’t in the same restrictive position we were then, eating at home still holds appeal as the temperatures are still low in most of the country and the vaccine rollout is still in its early stages.
So whether you put on a cocktail dress for a virtual Zoom dinner party with friends — or don a pair of comfy pajamas for a gourmet-take on the traditional TV dinner — check out these 8 New York catering companies. It’s not every day that you get to eat like you’re at a Black-Tie event.

We love a bingeable pop culture moment — and TV shows have never been hotter. Thanks to a rise in streaming services and more time spent on the couch, it’s easier than ever to get lost in a great series. But the A-list faces we’re used to seeing on the big screen aren’t the only aspects of our new favorite shows that look familiar.
The latest hit series of 2020 and 2021 hold a close resemblance to some of our favorite event themes, designs, and photos from parties past. From an all too familiar sweetheart setup at La Quinta Resort & Spa (hello, The Bachelorette), to a chess-inspired Miami Bar Mitzvah party that would make Beth Harmon of The Queen’s Gambit proud, were sharing party themes that were ahead of their time — and are here to stay. There’s a show (and a theme) for every taste below.
Netflix, we officially forgive you for dumping our Friends after this one. Shondaland did it again with the Bridgerton series, which broke the streaming giant’s viewing records — and had us glued to our screens for two days straight. The storyline takes us back to 19th-century Britain; but in this 1813 society, sovereignty doesn’t discriminate between races. Women, however, are far from equal in a world where suffocating corsets and empire waist gowns rule the ballroom.
Ruffles, bows, feathers, and bright billowing fabric filled small screens across the country — and topped tables at this historic baby shower. Luscious lavenders, bubblegum pink, and eye-catching teals filled the royally charged room — alongside sparkling chandeliers, luxe curtain framed windows, and feather-topped florals. The dressed-up celebration (inspired by Marie Antonette) has had our team head over fabric-covered heels ever since it was added to PartySlate in 2018 — and now we’re re-assured why.

We’ll never forget the day in the office when a party with a Gucci claw machine was added to PartySlate. Yes, you read that right — and after Bling Empire was released on Netflix (over a year later), it all made sense. The reality TV show follows 10 wealthy Asian and Asian-American socialites around Los Angeles, taking us inside their extravagant parties and milestone celebrations.
Christine Chiu, a Taiwaneese businesswoman-turned-influencer is known for her role in the show as a popular “frenemy,” magnificent party host, and mother to the infamous Baby G. Click into this event and you’ll find all the photos from Baby G’s over-the-top first birthday party, including floral-filled carousels, bite-sized faces (you’ll understand soon), and a customizable surf shop. But don’t worry, Baby G and his parents gave back, donating an entire wing to the museum venue, along with free admission for less fortunate children.
The Mandalorian encompases the adventure of a warrior on a mission to return “The Child” (a Baby Yoda look alike) back to his kind. As they jump from planet to planet on the outskirts of the galaxy, we witness night skies, bright stars, and bold characters. From glowing Star Wars-inspired weddings to lightsaber ceilings at Jedi-themed Bar and Bat Mitzvahs, it’s safe to say our team has seen all things galactic glamour. But when watching the latest piece of the ever growing Star Wars franchise puzzle, our minds were taken to one party in particular.
Enter the 50th-birthday celebration set under a starry night sky. With sputnik light installations hovering above an elongated, black linen covered table, it’s no wonder this Los Angeles-based party resulted in one of our most-liked Instagrams of 2020. The small gathering featured an array of Star Wars-inspired décor (ranging from subtle to prominent), including an army of figurine place cards and beams of metallic gold and black balloons.

Ever since he TikToked into our lives in March of 2020, Matt James has had our full and undivided attention. He’s come a long way since then, making well overdue history as the first ever Black Bachelor, with one of the most representative casts in the franchise’s history. Stealing hearts on and off screen, he’s proven to be one of the most genuine and adored leads the show has ever seen.
Matt James has made it clear that he’s not just looking for love, he’s looking for a wife. And as the season plays out, we hope that the man who wears his heart on his sleeve gets a fairytale ending like this one (with a floral heart installation to match). In true Bachelor style, this romantic proposal was filled with hundreds of red roses and a dramatic carpet entrance. However, the bouquet on display was far from the final rose thanks to red flower-topped cupcakes and more elements from the celebration that followed.

I May Destroy You reminds us of the power of television. The British storyline merges dark comedy and intense drama to cover an incredibly sensitive topic — while also spreading awareness, evoking emotion, and sending important messages to global audiences along the way.
This “shop and sip’s” bright florals and cheery photo ops may not perfectly resemble the intense life events of Arabella, but the London-based charity event brought friends together to raise awareness (and funds) for the healthcare of someone in need. Inspired events (like inspired television), inspire people — and while attending parties and binging new shows may be fun, entertainment is at its most meaningful with stories like these.

Yes, we have endless Parisian-themed parties on PartySlate, but Emily in Paris is more than just French-inspired. The new Netflix series — that we’d describe as a mash up between Sex and the City and Lizzie McGuire — tells the story of a social media marketer who’s relocated to her firm’s Paris-based office. She’s been sent to offer an (unrequested) “American” point of view and documents her journey on social media throughout (title drop: her handle is @emilyinparis).
There are plenty of reasons this Bat Mitzvah party is giving us all the Emily Cooper vibes — aside from the fact that her vibrant fashion choices resemble this party’s bright pink and purple palette. With Instagrammable components at every turn (we’re talking pink sushi rolls and a make-your-own jean jacket station), this Gen Z celebration reminds us of the trendy product launches, new brand marketing methods, and modern social media use seen in the show. Thinking outside-the-box seems to be Emily’s best asset, and this party is anything but ordinary.

Selling Sunset is exactly what it sounds like. The reality show features some of Los Angeles’ hottest real estate agents and the gorgeous mansions they have on the market (plus, some coworking drama — it’s reality TV after all). The series is filled with astounding homes, sweeping views of the rolling Hollywood hills, and some very luxe weddings and events (check out Christine Quinn’s goth wedding cake for a taste).
Located in the penthouse suite of the Sunset Tower Hotel (which happens to be located in the heart of the Sunset strip), just about everything from this glam 50th-birthday party says “The Oppenheim Group.” Skyline views of downtown Los Angeles, a “Champagne and diamonds” theme, and an installed gold mirrored floor are just a few reasons we’re sold on this event album.

We can practically hear the opening piano notes as we look at this photo of our favorite TV family. If you haven’t watched Schitt’s Creek, you simply must for unrivaled character development, hilarious, personality-packed punches, and a storyline that you’ve never heard (or seen) before. Although the Rose family’s reimagined living situation isn’t ideal — cue Alexis’ “Eww, David” — Schitt’s Creek has reminded us of motels’ vintage charm (and spoiler alert: they come around to their new home).
This Austin-based travel spot was the perfect venue for a 90s-inspired 30th-birthday party. Chunky pool floats, neon cake toppers, and retro décor made a splash in the rented out space (as did the fun-loving guest list). In the Southern summer heat, we can’t think of a better way to cool off (and celebrate) than this playful pool party.

Long live the Queen, aka, Beth Harmon. Set in the 1950s, an orphan-turned-chess prodigy sets new standards for women in yet another Netflix hit. Forget the knight and shining armour (unless you’re referring to the board pieces), this is a love story between player and game.
A chess-inspired party design is hard to come by — especially because Chess only recently became “cool.” (Chess boards everywhere sold out after The Queen’s Gambit was released). Blown-up Knights stood behind bars, oversized Rooks hovered over couches, and playable, life-sized boards were at guests’ disposal at this one-of-a-kind party — although we have a feeling more chess-themed celebrations will pop up in the future.

Consider us royally-obsessed with The Crown (in real life and on screen). The realistic portrayals of Britain’s House of Windsor unveils the evolution of Queen Elizabeth II and her family as they navigate their royal duties — and life — as some of the most famous faces in the United Kingdom and beyond. Although The Crown is not entirely accurate (how could they depict exactly how things went down behind closed doors?), the show does give us a glimpse of history — down to the outfits that were worn at major milestone events.
This London-based party does the same, taking a young Queen Victoria’s private sketchbook, which was filled with dreams of magical worlds and fantastic characters, and brings it to life through the lens of an artistic eye. The event took place at none other than Kensington Palace, and the photos will blow you away from ceilings dripping in colorful florals to animated entertainment that will take you back in time.

It’s not news that Indian weddings are magnificent, color-filled, lively, dazzling — and the list goes on. Our team was ecstatic to learn of Netflix’s new release: The Big Day, which documents six Indian couples on a journey to — you guessed it — their wedding day. The 13 part series sheds light on the beauty of Indian wedding traditions around the world.

How can you describe the absurdity that is Tiger King in just a few sentences? We won’t even try — just search “Carol Baskin” and Google will do the rest. While Tiger King was the biggest craze to hit quarantine in March of 2020, this jungle-themed Bar Mitzvah party was one of our favorites to hit PartySlate in 2019.
The roaring dance floor is far from the only mesmerizing detail, as the rest of the party depicts jungle scenes that include lush greenery, ivy covered signage, and more. The party’s untamed décor set the tone for a wild night, and tells us that while tigers may belong to the jungle, guests belonged on that mesmerizing dance floor.

The “most dramatic season” of The Bachelorette began with Claire Crowley (who became the first lead in show history to take off before the journey was over) and ended with Tayshia — who not only saved the season, but became a Bachelor Nation fan favorite.
Like the first travel-less season of The Bachelorette, the entirety of this wedding took place at La Quinta Resort & Club in Southern California — and the bride and groom’s camera-facing sweetheart table looks all too familiar. With eye-catching floral arrangements, ethereal drapery, and a romantic spotlight setup, this wedding framework reminds us of Tayshia’s one-on-one dinner dates at the resort (minus the untouched dinners, of course).

If you love a functional space, clean cabinet, organized closet, and A-list celebrities, then The Home Editon Netflix is a must-watch. From Reese Witherspoon’s memorabilia closet makeover to Khloe Kardashian’s garage transformation, every episode is both relaxing and satisfying.
This product launch’s shelving says “maximize your storage space” — and it’s safe to say The Home Edit’s Clea and Joanna would approve. Notorious for their color-coded techniques, we thought of the duo as soon as we saw the skincare displays divided by hue and sorted by product. We’re sharing 12 more satisfyingly sleek events here.

Oh how we love a drama-filled reality show (from the comfort of our couch, that is) — and Bravo’s Summer House combines our favorite season with our favorite form of entertainment. Think MTV’s Jersey Shore — but with a preppy Bravo twist and a house in the Hamptons.
Speaking of the East Coast, we can’t think of better celebration inspiration for Summer House than this Hamptons-themed party. Seafood snacks, Moscow Mules, a beachy palette, clever signage, peppy patterns, and mini adirondack chairs are just some of the many reasons you need to click into this event album (and recreate it come summer).

The Good Place is one of those “who thought of this and how did they make it so good?” types of series. The plot: Eleanor has reached her afterlife and ends up in “The Good Place” — but only by mistake. She does her best to ride out the error and avoid being sent to the alternative of “The Good Place” (you can infer that one).
This good and evil-themed wedding covers the concept of The Good Place perfectly; plus, it made our list of the most creative party themes to duplicate this year. It’s not often you find an over-the-top wedding reception with such a unique design. Click through to see the magical photos which include an absolutely incredible bar backdrop, astounding light projections, living walls with budding roses, and more.

No matter where you land on the “who’s the best to ever play the game” debate, there’s no denying that Michael Jordan is in the conversation. When ESPN released The Last Dance, fans of all ages got a brand new look at, and appreciation for, Jordan’s story with never-before-seen footage. The docuseries takes a close look at MJ’s career, and how he changed basketball (and sneaker culture) forever.
Michael Jordan’s passion, unrivaled drive, and competitive nature continues to inspire kids around the world with dreams of making it to the NBA — or simply a love for the game. We’ve seen countless basketball-themed Bar and Bat Mitzvah parties on PartySlate (and even Air Jordan-themed parties). It’s clear kids still want to be “like Mike,” and we’re loving all the creative décor, unique elements, and sports-fueled themes that they’re bringing to the table (like this hoop-inspired centerpiece).

You can always count on HBO for dark and twisted plot lines — and The Flight Attendant is just that (with some humor on the side). The show’s premise: Your life can change in one night — which is what happened to flight attendant Cassandra, who wakes up in a hotel room in Bangkok with no memory of the night prior (we’ll let you uncover the rest).
Although this milestone birthday isn’t based on a dark tale, it did transport guests from the Windy City to a tropical climate. Friends and family of the guest of honor were able to celebrate and enjoy life on their travel-filled night out (after all, it can all change in a night). The party began in an airport setting with flight projections, a TSA check-in, and a first class lounge. As the night progressed, attendees found themselves in the warmth of Hawaii with surfboard ceilings, volleyball courts, tropical palms, and so much more.

The times are feeling a bit apocalyptic. As I write this, last night’s Chicago snowfall has eclipsed the furniture in my backyard; my car is but a memory; my driveway never existed. The topography of my neighborhood is flat and blindingly white. It doesn’t matter — we weren’t going anywhere anyway.
I cannot believe that it’s been almost a full year since COVID-19 entered our vocabulary. In preparation for writing this, I looked back at my last “Letter from the Editor” which happened to be in April of 2020. I was filled with hope — as I still am now. But, I was also filled with naiveté.
As a company, PartySlate was launching our #CelebrateSoon campaign, a reminder that our global situation was temporary. My letter’s short-sightedness wasn’t in the messaging, because I believe it as firmly today as I did then: people still want to celebrate the most important moments in their lives with the most important people in their lives. But, I misread the timeline.
Ten months later, we’re still social distancing. We’re still wearing masks when we leave the house. We’re still wearing a nice shirt on top paired with pajamas on the bottom for Zoom meetings. But I was also naive about the events industry. Over the past year, I have been wowed.
Albert Einstein famously said, “The measure of intelligence is the ability to change.” To that I say, Sir, the events industry is filled with geniuses. I have witnessed adaptation at lightning speed. Groups mobilized into coalitions to advocate for the events industry at state and national levels, requesting funding, but also clear safety standards for events.
Closer to home, PartySlate immediately began offering a free digital education series focused on topics that our self-described “tech-geek” co-founder Julie Roth Novack is well-versed in. We were working to help a temporarily-halted industry persevere.
In the meantime, the industry’s most creative and nimble minds turned to virtual events. Event planners learned about technology; caterers turned to home delivery for virtual events and expanded their offerings to include online cooking instruction for virtual engagement; entertainment companies took their talent online and some hosted concerts on social media to lift everyone’s spirits.
In the absence of guidelines for in-person gatherings, event planners, venues, caterers, and more worked together to define their own. They devised plans for safe event check-in, spaced-out seating, comfortable food service, and so on. They teamed up with medical professionals to offer services for on-site COVID-19 testing at events. And designers, with an eye for beauty, stepped in to create custom masks for safe celebrations that were still chic (see a fun example here).
As events have gradually reopened to smaller groups, we’ve seen the rise of terms like “hybrid” to describe events that combine in-person celebrants with those joining remotely. “Micro wedding” is the rising term for nuptials with fewer than 50 attendees, and “minimony” describes 10 or fewer guest gatherings. In short, the industry has innovated.
Here’s how I know events will be back — and even bigger than before. Last Friday night, four friends and I waded through snow and sat outside (chairs 6-feet apart and in 4-degree weather) to celebrate “Galentine’s Day” together. It is not a tradition; in fact, I’ve never before celebrated this made-up holiday. But our need to gather was so strong that we ignored the silly play-on-words and fabricated nature of the “holiday,” donned boot and glove warmers, swaddled in blankets, and celebrated. We agreed to an hour-long timeframe to avoid hypothermia, but ended up breaking open new packages of warmers and stayed nearly three hours, trading stories serious and hysterical until we couldn’t feel our toes. We luxuriated in just being together.
While #CelebrateSoon last April might have been too optimistic, our hope wasn’t misplaced. With so many clever and safe ways to gather and a vaccination rollout plan underway, “soon” is closer than ever.
New year, new events. We’re officially one month into 2021 — and it’s been jam packed already. January brought us a new Bachelor(hello, Matt James); it brought Tom Brady to his 10th Super Bowl (🐐); it brought us our first ever woman and Black Vice President. We have a lot to celebrate.
So it makes sense that January brought us an influx of incredible new events. Below you’ll find 10 of the most popular parties added to PartySlate in January of 2021. From social-distanced Bar Mitzvahs (because a coming of age doesn’t wait), to micro weddings, scaled-down birthdays, and more, we are happy to see that people are still finding ways to celebrate — together.
