A Popular First Birthday Party Venue Answers Your 7 Biggest Planning Questions

When it comes to over-the-top, gorgeous first birthday parties, there’s no first birthday party venue in the New York area that’s as busy as Waterside Events. Boasting absolutely stunning views of the NYC skyline from towering windows at the water’s edge, the space plays host to beautiful, elegant celebrations.

Waterside Events sits directly across the river from New York’s iconic skyline, yet is easily accessible for suburb-dwellers in its North Bergen, New Jersey locale. From the views to the fare, the space is the perfect first birthday party venue (and it also happens to be a great spot for wedding showers, communion celebrations, brunch, and gorgeous evening weddings against a sparkling city backdrop).

In fact, we saw so many creative and unique first birthday parties on Waterside’s PartySlate profile — including a few amazing Korean Dols or Doljanchis, a Korean first birthday tradition to bless the child — that we reached out to ask for advice for anyone planning a child’s milestone celebration.

We spoke with Lesley Lovett, banquet manager and seasoned event planner at Waterside Events. She gave us the lowdown on everything from how far out you should book a first birthday party venue to menu items that both kids and adults love.

Create a “First Birthday Party Idea Slate” to share your theme ideas with your event planner and chosen venue so they can work together to produce the perfect celebration for your child’s milestone first birthday.

Read on to discover how many guests you should plan to have as well as the most creative first birthday party themes this experienced team has seen.

1. How early should parents book a first birthday party venue?

I would say around 6 months out or so. We book up daytimes quickly, so afternoons can get taken quickly.

2. What menu items are a hit with kids and adults at first birthday parties?

Kids and younger children love clean pasta (plain with red sauce or butter), chicken fingers, grilled cheese, sliders, fries, mini-pretzels — kid stuff. For adults, hosts often choose a prix-fixe menu, like a brunch buffet, lunch buffet or sit-down lunch. For adults, prix fixe sitdown lunch is often four-courses offer the choice between three entrees with orders taken at the table.

Of course, we also offer vegetarian options and can accommodate any kind of allergy or food preference. With every event, we ask about severe allergies. In fact, We don’t cook with anything that includes peanuts or other typical allergens just to be on the safe side. Our menus also handily note GF and other specialty items to guide guests.

3. What other event professionals do you suggest working with for hosting a unique, themed birthday party?

Once you’ve chosen a first birthday party venue, whether or not to use a planner depends on your budget and type of celebration. I notice that if the parents do hire a planner for a beautiful theme and décor, they often hire a photographer to capture the day. Parents often hire a planner/designer hybrid.

We do have a limited number of planners that we can recommend who know our location very well. It’s definitely an advantage to hire a planner who knows the dimensions of the space and load-in details. We build relationships with planners and having worked as a team before helps events become seamless and come together beautifully. For larger gatherings we have seen hosts bring in live kid-friendly entertainment, like clowns, magicians, balloons, face painters, etc.

4. What size guest list do you recommend for first birthday parties?

I find that when you decide to have a first birthday party at a catering venue, it’s often more of an adult party than a kids party. Your house would be less formal, but a party at a beautiful venue tends to be more for the adults. For some parties we will have 10 kids coming and others will have 40, it really just depends on the family and friends and what they choose. However, when there are more kids, it’s a good idea to provide some kind of entertainment.

IMAGE CREDITS | photographer: Eroula Dimitriou Photography | event planner: Angi & Co | venue: Waterside Events

5. What activities have you seen work well at first birthday party celebrations?

In addition to the entertainment options I’ve mentioned, if younger guests are between 3 and 6 years old, a little craft table or coloring area keeps them engaged — but definitely steer clear of glitter!

There’s also a meaningful activity for Korean first birthday parties (Korean Dols) that has the birthday child choose items that will predict his or her future.

PartySlate note: The idea behind the Doljabi custom that Lesley mentions above is to predict possible future careers and activities for the one-year-old being celebrated. Specifically, 5-8 items are placed in front of the child that represent different professions — like a computer mouse to indicate technology, a gavel for a judge, a stethoscope for a doctor, and so on.

Whichever item the child gravitates to and picks up first indicates their interest. Learn more about Korean first birthday parties and Doljabi customs at Wikipedia, Kid World Citizen or The Soul of Seoul

6. What is unique about your venue that has attracted so many beautiful birthday celebrations?

First, of course, the view alone is our biggest selling point. The atmosphere is really bright and open — it’s definitely not like an enclosed banquet room. And our location offers a real wow-factor for out-of-towners. We’re right on the Hudson River, which also makes us a great midway point for families from NY and NJ to meet to celebrate.

Our food is also incredible. Our head chef (who is also one of the owners) is CIA-trained [referring to the highly-revered Culinary Institute of America]. I’m really proud of our food and service. We are a Greek-owned space, and the family has been in the restaurant catering business for many years. We have really flexible chefs who can customize menus based on preferences or nationality and are very open to special requests. Your grandmother wants to bring cookies in? That’s okay, we allow something special like a dessert. We really want to incorporate your customs into the party.

7. What are the most creative first birthday themes you’ve seen?

Oh wow, there are so many! We’ve seen a beautiful mermaid-themed party, an under-the-sea one, a very cool carnival theme, a lush forest theme, Alice in Wonderland, a party centered around sweets, and of course various princess themes.

But wait, there’s more…

See additional kids birthday party themes including music-themed celebrations, sports-themed parties, animal-themed gatherings, and many more birthday ideas.

COVID-19 Couldn’t Stop This Nurse and Restaurant Owner from Celebrating Their 1-Year Anniversary in Style

Samantha Palmieri knew that she wanted her one-year wedding anniversary to be special. Like many newlyweds, she and her husband Frank had plans to go out for a nice dinner. After that, they intended to stay the night at Hotel Monaco, the same hotel where they had spent their wedding night. There was the usual excitement and anticipation — with happy thoughts of finally indulging in the top tier of wedding cake and reminiscing about all of the meaningful moments from their wedding reception, like dancing in each other’s arms as EastCoast Entertainment’s band Blue Label lured guests onto the dance floor.

And then, everything changed.

On March 21, 2020, as more COVID-19 cases spread across the country, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy ordered all residents to shelter in place. As Samantha and Frank’s anniversary date of April 13th began to approach, they were forced to join millions of other Americans in adapting to a new way of life.

Because Samantha is a nurse at Cooper University Hospital, she was increasingly at risk for infection — especially once her floor was converted to COVID-19 ICU. With that in mind, Samantha and Frank decided that it would soon be safer to shelter in place separately. “Aside from the fact that now I’m working hands-on with patients who have tested positive for COVID-19 every day,” Samantha shares, “Frank is immunocompromised, and I just couldn’t take the risk.”

Moreover, as Frank was preparing to open his seasonal restaurant Ike’s Famous Crabcakes for takeout and delivery, he needed to take extra precautions to ensure the safety of his staff and customers. Samantha tells us, “I knew once that opened then that would be even more of a reason to distance for the safety of him, and others.”

With a temporary separation pending, Samantha and Frank were more determined than ever to have a meaningful anniversary celebration. “Obviously, plans had to change,” Samantha says. “I still wanted to do something special, but had no idea what to do.” And then a light bulb went off.

Samantha texted Laura Nikolich, a friend and entertainment consultant for EastCoast Entertainment, to see if she could get the set list from her wedding night. Laura then reached out to Jefe Ebbert, the band leader of Blue Label. “He emailed me within a day,” Samantha tells us. “He was actually on a walk with his family but sent me over an abbreviated list just to get it to me, then later that day resent the full set. It meant a lot that they felt it was a priority and responded so quickly.” Once she heard from Jefe, Samantha began to make a Spotify playlist to surprise Frank.

On the day of their one-year wedding anniversary, Samantha and Frank woke up and enjoyed breakfast with mimosas in their wedding-day Champagne flutes. They watched their wedding video by KarmaPants and looked through their wedding photography by Joy Masi. Later, they took a drive by Front & Palmer, their wedding site and reception venue.

“We came home and got ready for dinner,” Samantha says. As she put on her wedding dress, she says she felt like she was getting ready for her first date. “I had butterflies!” she tells us. “We opened a special bottle of wine and ate a delicious dinner from a local Italian spot in Haddonfield: Tre Famiglia.” And then, after slicing into that top tier of wedding cake, Samantha surprised Frank with the Spotify list. From that moment onward, they danced the night away.

Samantha tells us, “Honestly, I wouldn’t change one thing from the day. Sure, I was looking forward to going out and celebrating, but there will be plenty of anniversaries in the future for that. Our first anniversary was unique, and we will alway remember how we made it special. I am so grateful that we were able to spend it together.”

A lot has changed since Samantha and Frank’s wedding anniversary on April 13. Laura, of EastCoast Entertainment, says that for them, it’s a time of long hours and organization. “We are putting a great deal of time and effort into rescheduling events that would be happening right now and are working hard to balance the time put into these reschedules with helping new potential clients as well.” Additionally, agencies like EastCoast Entertainment are helping new clients virtually pick their bands with live videos, reviews, and references. Laura adds, “For all clients, I try to be available as much as possible and offer to talk at any time of day. I have clients on the front lines working 24-hour shifts, clients that are homeschooling their children, and clients that may be caring for a loved one. Some only have the option of talking at either 6am or 10pm. If I can make it work, I’ll take the call.”

Two guitarists and drummer perform in a raw industrial space.

For now, Samantha and Frank are staying in separate bedrooms and using different bathrooms. Once Frank’s restaurant opens up full-time, he will be staying somewhere else altogether. “We had to make decisions that we felt were best for us,” Samantha says, “and that might not be the same for other people — and that’s okay.”

Samantha goes on to say, “Life will continue to change, just as it is changing for everyone — and it will get hard (as if it hasn’t been already), but I try to remember that there are brighter days ahead.” Samantha is grateful for all the times she and Frank have had together and will have again in the future. As she reminds us, smiling, “In sickness and in health… and I’d prefer the latter.”

This Virtual Bat Mitzvah in New York Created Meaningful Memories, Thanks to Strategic Planning & Technology

When it comes to getting ready for a Bar or Bat Mitzvah ceremony, children prepare for well over a year. They memorize Torah portions; they write essays about what the holy words mean to them; they undertake a Mitzvah project and write about that too. Torah portions correspond to the calendar, so it’s a lot of — very date-centered — work. What happens when you undertake all of this preparation and plan a very personal celebration, but then a global pandemic interferes? This is the question thousands of pre-teens and their families are now struggling to answer. We have one such story to inspire you and perhaps offer up new perspectives and hope.

How Do You Reschedule a Rite of Passage? You Don’t.

Thirteen-year-old Jordan Sokoloff was all set to have her Bat Mitzvah ceremony at her temple, New York City’s Central Synagogue, on Saturday, April 4. As the date grew closer though, it became clear that new arrangements needed to be made — for both the ceremony and the party. Enter event planner, Amy Katz of Amy Katz Events, who had been working with the family to plan the Bat Mitzvah party.

Katz says, “Sadly, these types of decisions have become the new norm at this time. We highly suggest having the service on the original date so that the child does not need to learn any new Torah material, since they have been preparing for months on end. Hold Bar or Bat Mitzvah services virtually, so that grandparents, family, and friends can still be a part of, and celebrate, this momentous accomplishment.”

Amy Sokoloff, Jordan’s mother, shares that the family decided to host their temple’s first “Zoom Mitzvah” from their home, with their rabbi and cantor joining from their respective homes. She says, “The temple gave us the option to postpone the service, but Jordan worked so hard and was ready to go. Our family was excited for the weekend, and we decided we should just do it and give everyone something to look forward to.” Sokoloff mentions that they’ve been members of the temple for 13 years and were so looking forward to celebrating this milestone there and that they’re considering ways to do so in the future.

What to Consider for a Virtual Ceremony

Sokoloff shares an insider look into what she learned firsthand while preparing for her daughter’s Zoom Mitzvah. First, she notes that they needed to find a “pretty spot” in their home for the ceremony. “The temple offered us an image of the temple that we could use as a Zoom backdrop, but we declined,” she says. Instead, the family set up a table for the materials like Jordan’s Torah portion, candles, and notes. Sokoloff added some festive flowers for the occasion.

Additionally, the family needed to consider where and how to set up computer cameras and screens so that Jordan could see her friends and family, as well as the rabbi and cantor — and they could all see and hear her. And with all of those eyes on her, Jordan needed to look great. Sokoloff says, “I was the hair and makeup person — and the manicurist.”

Lastly, the family arranged for a take-out meal from one of Jordan’s favorite restaurants. “Jordan was a great sport. We made it as special as possible given the circumstances,” says Sokoloff. Overall, the experience was a unique one that, now that it’s over, she describes as “truly a special day.”

The Party — However — Should Be Postponed

Don’t give up on celebrating life’s big moments; instead, consider postponing. Trust us: we will all need happy reasons to gather together after the threat of this pandemic has faded. Katz says, “We are all facing an unknown future now. But, postponing to a later date is the only option at this time. We moved the party date to six months later in the hopes that the world will be safer.”

Sokoloff says of breaking the news to Jordan, “She was obviously disappointed, but not surprised, as she had just seen it happening with some of her friends. She understood that there were limited options.” The family was grateful to be working with Katz, as she worked tirelessly to find a new date in October for Jordan’s Bat Mitzvah party.

Plan B: Choosing a Friday Night Celebration

Katz says, “The first call was to the venue — the Edison Ballroom in Times Square — to get availability on any Saturday dates in 2020. Unfortunately, there were none available. Our plan B was to find another alternative. My clients decided that the best night to celebrate would be on a Friday night in October.”

“A lot of Jordan’s friends are in the same position — every Saturday in the fall is already booked with Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Some are doing Sundays. We’re glad we were able to get a Friday evening,” says Sokoloff.

After Katz lined up some possible Friday evening dates, her next calls were to entertainment company More Than Music, décor firm Diana Gould Ltd, photographer Denis Leon, and videographer and montage-maker Artisan NY. She says, “Luckily, this was one of the first Bat Mitzvahs that needed to be postponed, so all event partners were accommodating and available. Working with an amazing team of professionals makes it easier when challenges arise as we all want the same outcome at the end of the day. The party must go on!”

Sokoloff says of the change, “Thank God I have Amy Katz —  when push came to shove and we had to postpone, it was a full day of checking with all of our vendors, and she was instrumental.” She notes that it was a rapidly changing time in terms of the pandemic in our country and that decisions about celebrations were becoming the reality. And she says, “Everyone at the same time was realizing they needed to postpone.”

Looking Ahead

The April 4 Bat Mitzvah party planning was well underway, with the Sokoloff family set to see their final table décor from the Gould team when the date needed to be postponed. The celebration, in the classic hues of black and white, silver and gold, will go on — on one fun Friday evening in October. Sokoloff says that the party will have “no theme, but a funky vibe.” They’re planning for a very fun evening of dancing all night. She adds, “We are very much looking forward to celebrating with family and friends.”

In fact, assuming all is up and running, the family is going to plan for a small temple service on the Thursday night before Jordan’s party, “We’d love for her to experience going up on the bimah and having the opportunity for a temple photoshoot,” says Sokoloff. Invitations for the first and postponed dates are from Julie Maloof Designs, while And That will be providing the personalized event swag.

Katz reminds us, in times like these, “Everyone needs to stay positive and focused as the situation will indeed get better. Having a new date in place to celebrate is something to look forward to, and this event will be even more meaningful than what was originally planned.”

How One New York Event Planner is Making a Difference During the Coronavirus Pandemic — & How You Can Too

How Gregoli Has Leveraged Her Skills & Contacts for Good

Top New York event planner JoAnn Gregoli of Elegant Occasions by JoAnn Gregoli has spent years honing her organization and crisis management skills by producing flawless, beautiful, and elaborate weddings and celebrations. But during this national crisis, she’s leveraging her talents in a new way — to help frontline health care workers in New York as hospitals get overrun with coronavirus patients.

“My focus has shifted — first, I helped my brides and grooms find new dates and grieve their postponements, then I turned my attention toward figuring out what I personally can do to make a difference. I realized the need was great and put a call out to others to help. After all,” says Gregoli, “our event community is full of project managers — we know how to stay calm in a crisis.”

The response to her request has been heartening. She began by calling New York City hospitals to ask about their needs. Then she called every wedding dress designer she knows in New York to ask them to make masks. But she didn’t stop there in her quest to ensure that our health care professionals have the tools they need to help others while staying safe. “I also contacted designers, knitting clubs, sewing clubs, and the Girl Scouts of America to ask them to sew masks,” says Gregoli.

When she heard from hospitals that they needed meals for their workers, as well as candy to keep up their energy in a pinch, Gregoli reached out to Mars Incorporated to ask them to send cases of their Skittles, M&Ms, Twix, Snickers, and more to New York hospitals. “I’m relentless and won’t take no for an answer,” she says. Gregoli also contacted her catering friends to arrange for meal preparation and leveraged her limo service contacts for pickup and delivery. She also created a drop spot at a local police station for neighbors who want to drop off packaged snacks, masks, and more to be taken to hospitals.

Grateful doctors and nurses have snapped pics of themselves wearing the colorfully-printed masks that Gregoli has sent their way. She says, “I feel for the first time in 30 years that I’m making a real difference. I never felt like this in my whole life.”

For Gregoli, the fight against coronavirus is personal. She has already lost four family members to the infection and has several more under hospital treatment. Further, she says, “I have kids on the front lines.” Her daughter is a physician assistant and her son is a police officer. She says she’s been so motivated that she hasn’t had time to wallow in the sorrow of not making any money right now; she’s shifted her focus away from herself.

Gregoli is drawing inspiration from the iconic “Rosie the Riveter” — a call to action now, just as it was during World War II when the Norman Rockwell graphic became the symbol of women joining the fight by working in factories and shipyards. Even this national inspiration is personal for Gregoli: “The drawing was actually based on my son-in-law’s grandmother,” she says. “Norman Rockwell was her next door neighbor.” Gregoli has tweaked the message to: “Save a life. Make a mask!”

3 Ways You Can Help Others Right Now

“To be complacent is a bad thing; doing nothing is a bad idea,” Gregoli reminds us. We all have more free time now and can be using it for good. “If you can sew, sew. If you can, donate money to GoFundMe pages (check out Gregoli’s page here, which is raising funds to employ out-of-work caterers to feed healthcare workers). Provide packaged snacks to hospitals — host dropoff points and deliver them,” she says. Below are just a few of Gregoli’s ideas for getting started now in the fight against coronavirus:

1) Contact your local hospital, ask for their community director, and inquire about their needs. “But don’t stop at hospitals; reach out to dialysis centers, cancer outpatient centers, and any other local health care facility that has the potential to be overwhelmed,” says Gregoli.

2) Reach out to volunteers in your community to fulfill requests. “I’ve got 80-year-olds sewing masks,” she says.

3) Create a distribution point. For Gregoli, this took the form of a local police station. When she goes to sort and prep items for delivery, she says she dons gloves and a mask and wields a can of Lysol to keep herself safe.

Gregoli describes New York as a “war zone” and warns that even if our cities feel safe right now, it’s headed our way. “It’s going to ramp up quickly, when it does, so start doing everything you can now,” she says. She adds, “It will make you feel better about yourself in this tough time.” We love how her ideas give us a sense of control — that there’s something we can do in a crisis that has left us all feeling kind of helpless.

A Video Save-the-Date, Gluten-Free Menu, and Epic After-Party are 3 Ways a Top NYC Bar & Bat Mitzvah Planner Made Her Daughter’s Celebration Super Personal

When it comes to planning a celebration, there is perhaps no more difficult client than a teen — make that your own teen, and you’re in for a world of strongly-held opinions and potential eye rolls. Luckily for seasoned event planner, Florie Huppert, she had already planned dozens of super-personal, meaningful Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations, including her own son’s event in 2017. In fact, as the founder of Florie Huppert Design, Huppert is one of the most accomplished Bar and Bat Mitzvah party planners in New York, so she wasn’t daunted by the prospect of having her own daughter as a client.

Huppert describes the planning process as full of “challenges and joys”, and she notes that kids are consistently opinionated about the same things: swag, photo booths, and when the presentations are happening. Huppert says, “Conceptually, planning an event like this is so big for any kid, that I only gave her the information she really needed to know,” says Huppert.

Expert Advice on Choosing a Theme

“What’s really important is that every event feels and looks like the culture of the family. The theme and any logo or branding should embody the kid being celebrated,” says Huppert. It’s about more than getting kids to articulate their interests—meaning Huppert doesn’t necessarily latch on to kid’s activities like tennis for a tennis-themed celebration, when planning. Instead she attempts to create a celebration that feels authentic to the spirit of the child, and family, being celebrated. “For inspiration, I pay close attention to the stuff they circle back to as we’re planning,” Huppert says.

Artful Inspiration Struck, Resulting in the Perfect Theme

Long before the celebration itself, the Huppert mother-daughter duo settled on a theme, which they then employed everywhere from the invitations to the take-home gifts. Inspiration struck when Huppert was walking by a mural in Williamsburg, Brooklyn; it said: “Be Optimistic.” She says, “I stopped in my tracks and took a picture. I knew that was it.” Huppert’s daughter’s name is Bea, and the more the planner considered the idea, the more she realized how perfectly it fit with her daughter’s spunky, fun-loving, generous personality.

“We decided to use the play-on-words with her name to send happy messages directly to our guests. You be happy, you be wild, and so on. It’s a message for all of us from Bea.” Of course, Huppert personalized the messages by tweaking them to “BEA Happy, BEA Wild, BEA Sweet, BEA Crazy,” and so on, honoring the core theme of “BEA 13.” At PartySlate, we love when kid’s celebrations are young, happy, fun, and bright—the perfect expression of childhood itself; add the perfect play on words and we are, well, BEAwitched.

A High-Tech Solution Fits with How Kids Communicate

Huppert elected to use a video as Bea’s save-the-date announcement, and she started the “BEA…” theme then. Kari Otero, of Kari Otero Photography, “worked hard to figure out how to make the process easier,” says Huppert. “It’s hard to mass-mail a video without an expensive infrastructure, so we decided to send out our message via text and Snapchat.” In this case, the delivery system was another inspired stroke; as any parent of a teen knows, Snapchat, TikTok, and YouTube are the languages they speak, so this save-the-date was a real attention-getter.

Choosing Décor that Captures Personality

“Bea is a hugely colorful human,” says Huppert of her daughter. “She’s tiny with an enormous personality and basically radiates rainbows.” Creating a colorful celebration was a necessity. Huppert began by looking at colors that she loves together until she settled on a bright, electrifying palette—with Bea’s approval, of course adding big graphics and gorgeous portrait shots by Otero.

Huppert is no stranger to the world of impression-making graphics. Once upon a time—in college and even before—she worked for Pentagram, one of the most highly regarded graphic design firms in the world, responsible for many of the branding and identity designs we know and love, like the new Dixie Chicks album art, the Fischer-Price toy logo and new-media Slack’s corporate identity. “Graphic design is important to me and I really focus on creating the right branding for events,” says Huppert. She wanted Bea’s celebration to be colorful but also dramatically big, with mega-graphics that were “bold, loud, and clear.” Huppert was especially inspired by Paula Scher’s work with The Public Theater

Choosing the Perfect Space for the Perfect Event

When it came to choosing a space that could showcase oversized graphics, as well as provide seamless guest flow from one element of the celebration to the next, Huppert knew she needed a venue that offered multiple spectacular spaces. Enter Weylin. The space, originally built in 1875 as the Williamsburg Savings Bank, is grand in scale and detail, featuring soaring ceilings, a frescoed dome and incredible period décor. Huppert says, “Weylin, even empty, is the most magnificent space in NYC.” We agree—in fact, PartySlate co-hosted a Vera Wang Spring Bridal launch in the glorious space last year.

When Bea got her first look at the decked-out space, Huppert says she “freaked out.” It was, after all, the culmination of all their planning and collaboration, and was, literally, her dream come true. Guests knew they were in the right spot when they arrived at Weylin with its exterior lit in glowing hot pink and neon blue, which set the scene for the vivid celebration to come. Partygoers arriving at the main staircase were ushered into the first domed space; adults stayed put for cocktail hour while kids were invited into the lower level.

A Delectable Gluten-Free Menu Honors Food Sensitivities

“We decided to serve the majority of the food in the cocktail space, then left it open for grazing the whole night,” says the planner. The fare included a massive sushi bar, a Korean food station, Mexican, and Greek stations, and more. Huppert says of the international choices, “We crafted a naturally gluten-free menu and leaned toward culinary choices that made it easy to accomplish that. I felt that Bea, as a celiac, should be able to eat anything at her party on her day.”

Pride Caterers ensured that even items not typically gluten-free, like the meatballs at the Italian station, were crafted with care so that Bea could fully enjoy her celebration. Even local fan-favorite Dinosaur BBQ made an appearance and, in an inspired cultural touch, a latke bar accompanied the kiddush.

Merging the Adults and Kids into One Dance Party

The beginning of the party found kids downstairs, enjoying a huge beauty bar, custom cubbies, gaming, elaborate themed-food stations—and, of course, presentations from friends to the new Bat Mitzvah. Then they were invited to join the adults upstairs for the dramatic reveal of the main party space. A wall lifted up into the dome revealing an immense room featuring a gorgeous bar adorned in florals by Enza Events, swanky lounge areas from CERF and Bubble Collection, as well as a huge dance floor.

“I like a freeform party with lots of dancing,” says Huppert of her decision to forgo some of the formalities usually associated with Bar and Bat Mitzvah celebrations. “There was a montage and speech but mostly just love and laughter, in keeping with our family’s culture of having a good time and enjoying each other,” she adds. And enjoy they did in front of the massive video wall from Fusion Productions. In fact, Huppert confirms that it was “the biggest video wall Fusion had ever built”, and that in planning the dance space she was inspired by concert staging. The high-tech addition featured intelligent lighting embedded in its base to dramatically illuminate the dance floor. Total Entertainment kept the dance floor filled with thrilled partygoers while Brooktech ensured an enveloping sound experience.

When One Party Ends, Another Begins

“At dessert time, we had dancers clad in mirrored disco-ball heads arrive to ‘Pied Piper’ the kids back downstairs where the space had been transformed into a neon afterparty,” says Huppert. This second party included a new DJ with a new setup as well as blacklights creating a fun glow. The kids changed into their “BEA Sleepy” pajamas and enjoyed desserts (gluten-free, of course) from Thomas Preti Events to Savor

Upstairs, adults boogied to a dance set of early 90s and pop—Huppert always makes sure that at multigenerational celebrations, everyone gets their favorite music—before spending their last hour downstairs with the kids. “It’s such a wow for guests to enter a whole new space, especially at the end of a celebration,” says the planner. Another little detail that made the evening seamless was the transport of all coats to the bottom floor to ensure a smooth exit.

An Evening to Enjoy — and Remember

Throughout the celebration, Kari Otero, Nathaniel Johnson Photography, and Courtney Collins Photography captured every beaming moment. Guests were able to take home snaps that night thanks to the Shake and Share Media photobooth, which was built in the vault of the bank. The TikTok booth allowed friends and family to create and share fun moving images.

In addition, guests left with custom swag. In addition to their PJs, guests rocked “BEA Happy” and “BEA Wild” hats and “BEA Crazy” tees, like the one Bea herself pulled on over her dream dress for the after-party.

Now that the celebration has ended and she has all the photos for memories, Huppert feels overwhelmed with gratitude. She says, “I loved this party so much—I have so many amazing industry friends who brought their A+ game to make this the party of Bea’s dreams. Everything was pretty spectacular.”

12 Event Photographers in NYC Who Captured Some of Our Favorite Shots of 2019

It may be a new year; but here at PartySlate, we’re still reminiscing over our favorite photographs of 2019. Long after the celebration ends — be it a wedding, corporate event, or milestone birthday — the good times live on forever in our photographs.

It’s no surprise to us that some of our favorite event photography hails from New York City. Home to the Met Gala, Broadway Theater, and dynamic Wall Street, this vibrant city is a hotspot for visually-stunning private events. These 12 event photographers in New York City know this spirited city inside and out, from where to find the most scenic backdrops (including gritty side streets and graffiti murals) to where to catch the best lighting. Most importantly, they know how to capture the perfect celebratory shot — whether it’s a first look in front of a city food cart or a dynamic aerialist performance at one of New York’s iconic venues.

A lot can happen in a year. At the end of the day, it’s the moments of human connection and celebration that we always continue to cherish. So with that in mind, here’s to a new year — and all of the joyful memories that we plan on bringing with us.
