New year, new trends. We are ready for the weddings, parties, galas, and more events in 2024 — and with our list, you will be too. You see, we’ve spent hours, days, and weeks talking to top vendors and looking at their latest and greatest gatherings to get a feel for what in-the-know party hosts will be up to in the coming year. Let’s just say this: It’s gonna be memorable.

Read on to find out how going from here to there just got better, what is replacing florals, and why performance stages are now optional.

Oh, and don’t miss our line-up of more trend content to see what catering, kid’s parties, corporate events, and creative themes will look like in the new year.

1. Spiral Aisles

The best way to get from here to there is no longer a straight line. More and more, we are seeing creative couples rethinking traditional aisle shapes.

A spiral aisle allows every guest to have a front row seat to your wedding procession. And aerial wedding photography reveals that a bird’s eye view of spiral ceremonies is even better; it’s a new kind of wedding wonder.

Boho Wedding at Xalet del Nin in Barcelona, Spain

Bohemian Passage

AWE: Amazing Weddings & Events worked closely with Dani and Matt to envision a wedding that perfectly expressed their free-spirited personalities; that included curating an aisle as unique as the couple. Set in Barcelona, the wedding featured a boho aesthetic and lots of memorable details like shot-glass place cards, feather décor, and tabletop lamp centerpieces (another trend on our list!).

Unique Spiral Wedding Ceremony Configuration and Dinner Reception Featuring Fornasetti Table Decor

Chic Coil

This Palm Beach wedding from the team at YSD Events is one to see. Inspired by decorative arts company Fornasetti’s work, the affair featured artistic moments at every turn. Speaking of turns, the spiral aisle wowed. Set on a lush lawn, a swirl of acrylic chairs led to a central ceremony. The nuptials eschewed the usual arch and instead put floral adornment at the aisle entry.

2. Venue Pattern as Inspiration

2024 will be a year of prints at events. Maximalism has been going strong in interior design circles — and the use of bright hues, layered patterns, and rich details can be seen outfitting the most stylish celebrations.

Clever party hosts are now taking their cue from their selected venue — using the space’s patterns to inspire everything from their invitations and linen to their catering and party favors.

Black & White & Chic All Over

It takes a savvy event planner to know that inspiration can come from anywhere. Given that this bride is an event planner, and that she hired the experts at Cassie LaMere Events, they were well-positioned to find the perfect element to tie this event together — the wallpaper print at the venue itself. The chic green, black, and cream floral design was repeated everywhere from the invitation suite and linen elements to the catering service.

Palm-Laden Paradise

The wallpaper at Mondrian South Beach in Miami is the epitome of tropical elegance. Fittingly, it served as inspiration for Brooke and Spencer as the couple worked with the talented team at An Affair to Remember by Marci to design their wedding invitations. Their envelope’s liner offered a prelude to the upcoming celebration in the most stylish way possible — by perfectly matching the hotel’s design aesthetic.

3. Disco + Another Motif = Unique Party Theme

Disco has been inspiring fun and funky parties for a few years now as 70s-inspired fashion and dance moves hustled their way back into style. We always love a party filled with disco balls — the more the better. And we simply adore what we’ve been seeing lately: a classic disco theme combined with another creative motif.

Think jungle disco, space-cowgirl disco, neon disco, desert disco, and even disco basketball. When it comes to party themes, your only limit is your imagination. And don’t forget to add at least one disco ball.

Enchanted Garden Disco

This is the garden disco party we didn’t know we needed. The Colony Palm Beach provided flexible indoor and outdoor spaces for GLDN Events to work their magic. The GLDN team produced a Bat Mitzvah celebration featuring bright florals, moody lighting, and disco elements galore. Disco balls outfitted everything from the place cards and centerpieces to cocktail stirrers, and, of course, the dance floor.

Tropical Disco

This vision in peach florals and palm fronds from the design team at RL Design HTX is gorgeous at every angle. A live band brought partygoers to the dance floor of this venue’s opening party to boogie under a chic mix of disco balls, rattan chandeliers, and greenery. The rooftop space offered lots of open air for lounging on palm printed chaises and peach-hued chairs.

4. Balletcore

Barbiecore has had a nice movie-fueled run, but it’s time for that trend to step its stilettos aside to make room for a more elegant style: Balletcore. Last year, runways were filled with the ballet flats, satin dresses, and corsets that are currently filling the shelves of boutiques everywhere.

And, as often happens, fashion trickles its way into events in beautiful ways. When it comes to Balletcore-influenced celebrations, we’re seeing graceful performances, chic pastel hues, and lots and lots of tulle. In ballet lingo, it is on pointe.

French Féte

Lisi Korn Signature Events produced this French-inspired dinner party with joie de vivre — and the talented team of Birch Event Design — from the clawfoot tub filled with pink-labeled Champagne to the velvet couch flanked in florals that was the perfect perch for connecting with friends or taking portraits. We love the delicate touches like the pale pink satin napkins and the memorable moments like the ballet performances.

photographer: Sean Henderson | design & floral: Revel Decor | venue: Revel Motor Row

Life in Pink

This “La Vie En Rosé”-themed gathering was well-placed at Revel Motor Row, with its chic courtyard that transitioned beautifully from day to dreamy night. Revel Decor created a perfectly pink vision with decadent chandeliers and lush florals. The team took tulle to new heights with overhead installations of the sheer fabric in muted ombré hues and created flowing table décor with the fabric, which was accented by linen from Nuage Designs.

5. Experiential Entrances for Guest Engagement

This year, it’s all about the journey — not the destination. Consider your event flow as an activity in and of itself. We love how experiential entrances create “wow” moments for guests transitioning from one part of a celebration to another.

Choose Your Own Path

Guests at this stunning networking event from Gilded Group Décor and Chris Weinberg Events had a choice. Would they enter the event by unlocking the door to transformation, connection, or growth? Each concept was on full display once guests entered the “The Little Prince”-themed soirée. Just see the bar area designed to look like an airplane in takeoff. We especially love how this engaging activity came with the perfect party favor: a custom keychain.

Greet Guests With Live Entertainment

PartySlate’s Associate Director for Consumer Marketing spends a good majority of her day looking at real event albums uploaded onto PartySlate — so she knew that she wanted to do something unique for her wedding ceremony. The Gold Coast All Stars serenaded guests as they ascended to the Grand Ballroom at Four Seasons Hotel Chicago. Make sure to see how the musical performances only got better with a lively reception and themed after party.

6. Back to Black (& White) — A Classic Palette Returns

There is no more stark color contrast than that of black and white. The duo is a classic for a reason — it merges old Hollywood glamour with sleek modernity. It’s a balance of brightness and drama.

While the timeless combination has always held some measure of popularity, its use in events is simply soaring as we head into the new year. Party hosts and couples have embraced the palette and are infusing their affairs with striking duochromatic tableaus.

Clever Colors

This 40th-birthday party from Events by Picnics In The City rocked a black and white palette and fun signage like “Sips About to Go Down” at the bar and “More Espresso, Less Depresso” at the coffee cart. From the “Take a Shot, Take a Seat” place card wall festooned with mini Patron tequila bottles with black and white straws to the classic checkered dance floor, this event wowed at every turn. Also, don’t miss the custom latte art and the cute churro cart.

Two-Toned Elegance

This event from the team at Jackie Rose Events curated a dinner party with chic black-and-white details at every turn. From the mirrored photo spot with its neon signage and cascade of balloons to dark and white chocolate strawberries and a color-split menu, the chic refined palette was expressed throughout. The three-tiered cake brought an additional celebratory element that guests loved.

7. No More Matchy Matchy: Stacking Pastel Colors

Goodbye monochromes; hello crisp color divisions. This is the perfect trend for party hosts who are looking for something more playful than a classic black and white color palette. Remember, layering your color scheme is just as much art as science, so make sure to hire a design team to perfect the look.

photographer: Jose Villa Photography | design & floral: Bustle Events & Tulipina | venue: Blackberry Farm | rentals: Found Rental Co.

Bridging the Rainbow

When your mountain landscape features soft, muted colors — it’s time to add a splash of whimsy. We love how this couple walked down the aisle with dreamy blue florals on one side, and romantic pink blooms on the other. A rainbow arch that bridged the two pastel color schemes was the perfect focal point for an exchange of vows. Make sure to see how the colorful floral motif continued indoors — a pop of playfulness against more neutral furnishings by Found Rental Co.

photographer: Maggie Braucher | design & floral: Haley Kelly Events & Flowershop & Emily Valentine | venue: The Dewberry Charleston | rentals: STRADLEY DAVIDSON

Layered Linens = Pastel Perfection

This whimsical tablescape is a lesson in the art of layering. We love how a flash of pastel purple popped between gold menus and delicately patterned table linen. Pastel blooms and tapered candles beautifully complemented the rustic seating by STRADLEY DAVIDSON. For even more pastel layering inspiration, check out the unique bridesmaid attire.

8. Faux Floral Place Settings

Florals and fêtes are natural partners — but the blooms don’t always have to be natural. We are loving the embodiment of floral décor in non-flower event elements. From embroidered and painted blooms to silk and gold leaves, faux florals are adding interest to tabletops at all kinds of events.

This type of ornamentation lasts and lasts and allows for the use of favorite flowers that may not be in season. Plus, you’re not limited to specific hues — those blue roses and tulips you’ve been dreaming of can be yours!

photographer: Twah Dougherty Photography | event planner: The Lynden Lane Company | design & floral: Lark Farnum Design | venue: Private Residence

Embroidered Elegance

Last year, we predicted that 2023 celebrations would be seeing more of grandma’s aesthetic — from catering service in mini cast iron pans to antique-style china — and this touch continues that trend. We adore the delicate detail of linen napkins embroidered with greenery and blooms that harken back to this wedding invitation’s liner print.

photographer: Andreas & Nico & Studio Leon | event planner: Lynn Dale Events | florist: JNG Event Consulting | venue: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston

Charming Chargers

A museum was the perfect setting for this unique custom wedding that featured artistic moments galore. From the stark beauty of single-bloom decals adorning the bar to the burst of printed florals in the invitation, a range of pink hues in inventive displays elevated this celebration. Don’t miss how striking floral chargers and mirrored tabletops brought interest without linen.

9. Symmetrical Split Arches — A Nod to Your Other Half

You and your beloved complete each other, and it shows with these perfectly symmetrical arches. Of course, symmetrical doesn’t have to mean traditional. In 2024, expect to see arches that split down the middle and serve as a unique framing device for your ceremony vows.

Pink Seaside Wedding at Montage Laguna Beach in Laguna Beach, California
photographer: Duke Images | venue: Montage Laguna Beach

Phases of the Moon

This stunning pink arch captures the phases of the moon with a full circle and waxing and waning crescents. We especially appreciate how the three arches evoke another 2024 trend: layered pastels. Make sure to see how this seaside reception was just as romantic with suspended pink floral centerpieces and plush neutral seating.

photographer: Boonetown Story | event planner: Anthem House | design & floral: Once Gathered | venue: The Bradford

A Heartfelt Ceremony

What happens when you join these two crimson arches? You get a perfectly shaped heart. We love how this minimalist setting allowed the romantic installation to take center stage — not upstaging the couple, of course. See how individual floral stems kept the minimalist motif going during the wedding reception. Sometimes, less is more — especially with a bold hue.

10. Forgo Florals: Greenery-Only Centerpieces Are Trending

In 2024, non-floral is still fresh. As party hosts lean into more eco-conscious décor options, centerpieces are going greener — both literally and figuratively. Remember, a few accent blooms can add a hint of drama to lush foliage. Don’t be afraid to mix and match greenery with minimalist floral details.

photographer: Jose Villa Photography & Joel Serrato | design & floral: Élan Artists & Yonder Design & Gregory Blake Sams Events & Kathleen Deery Design | venue: Montage Healdsburg | rentals: Found Rental Co.

Monochromatic & Modern

When event industry professionals gather, you can expect a sophisticated setting. This lush welcome party embraced a sleek design with an all-black table and black-accented seating. Black candles segmented bouquets of organic greenery for a fresh and refined look. Make sure to see how candlelight kept the party going after dark.

photographer: Jonathan Scott Studio | event planner: Guerdy Design | venue: Fisher Island Club & Resort

Tropical Tablescapes

This tented wedding, planned by Guerdy Design, evokes a lush tropical setting with tablescapes laden with white orchid table runners ending in a cascade of oversized palm leaves. Paradise continued with twinkling string lights and candlelit ceiling décor suspended over an opalescent dance floor.

11. Stone Signage

A few years ago, we saw the rise of the agate. The banded gemstones in vibrant colors were everywhere at events — from slices acting as place cards to cakes with agate-like centers spilling open.

But now things are getting even more natural with rock elements at the most elegant celebrations. Think mini slabs of granite or slate identifying table numbers or acting as bar or directional signage. We love the organic aesthetic that stone details are bringing to all kinds of celebrations.

photographer: Los Ebano | event planner: Lucky in Love | design & floral: Cristina Gonzalez | venue: Baja Luna

Rock & Revelry

This wedding, set at Baja Luna in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, is already placed in a serene natural space, so it makes sense to bring in even more organic elements. We love how the table numbers carved into stone extend that style to the tabletops. Also don’t miss the greenery suspended above the nuptial arch and draping over the cocktail area for a beautifully cohesive celebration.

photographer: Lauren Sims Photo | event planner: BWEDDINGS | venue: The Arbory Chicago

Stone Ages

This multicultural wedding was full of warm personal details, from cocktail napkins telling the couple’s story to a memory wall honoring those not present. The Arbory Chicago provided a historic space that added character with vintage industrial elements that were perfectly married to natural details like potted palms and luxurious stone bar menus.

12. Boldly Draped Tents

We love bold hues at events. And, from luxury tented weddings to summer dinner parties, a tent structure covered in flowing fabric creates a special space. Combine the two and you get magic: an enclosed spot that feels both private and vibrant.

photographer: Studio Leon | event planner: GoBella Design & Planning | design & floral: Bloom Flower Shop | venue: Keystone Ranch

Peach Perfection

Take a picturesque mountain backdrop and add a tent structure with layers and layers of sheer peach drapery, and you’ll get this gorgeous wedding from the planning team at GoBella Design & Planning. We adore the luxurious palette and dreamy candlelight and how they work together to create the aesthetic of being inside a perfect beautiful jewel box.

photographer: Liz Fogarty Photography | event planner: Pamela Barefoot Events + Design | design & floral: Fabrication Events & Sophie Felts Floral Design | caterer: Well Dunn Catering

Green Glamour

From olive to pine, greens can warm up any wedding. This rich moss-hued draped reception made chic use of the color, surrounding guests to create an intimate vibe in a sprawling space. Don’t miss how velvet linen, ruffled plates, miniature glass lamps, and loads of candles brought glamour to the tabletops.

13. Back to the Future With Metallic Fringe

Fringe is no longer on the fringe — and it’s back in futuristic form. Inspired from 2024 fashion runway trends, this event element pairs playfulness with absolute glamour. Remember, color is your friend; so lean into bold palettes with plenty of shimmer.

Weddings by Stardust planned one delight after another, including metallic fringe on everything from the ceiling to the photo ops. See how the birthday cake sported the same shimmering fringe design (with a few disco balls for good measure).

14. Quiet Luxury — In Cake Form

The style of “quiet luxury” is one of high-quality ingredients paired with a minimalistic aesthetic. Quiet luxury is not flashy; it offers timeless appeal. In the world of fashion, it is expressed through classics like khaki trench coats and crisp white button-ups.

For weddings and other celebrations, quiet luxury can be an elegant all-white cake with minimal adornment. It is beautiful in its simplicity — and photos of such a cake will never look dated, but rather always in style.

Towering Elegance

This Miami wedding from the visionary planners at Posh Parties used color to differentiate each part of the celebration at the iconic Faena Hotel Miami Beach. The hotel offered varied spaces to realize the vision, ending in an all-white reception. The couple’s understated wedding cake’s unique pleated design and crisp lines perfected the aesthetic.

Black & White Beauty

What do you get when you combine a castle set against mountainous countryside and a chic black and white palette? This stunning wedding at Greystone Castle in Colorado. With a classic checkered dance floor defined overhead by fringe, it makes sense that the wedding cake would be timeless and modern too. Its white ruffles are quiet and luxurious, indeed.

15. Dedicated Mocktail Bars for the Sober Curious

According to Michael Stavros of M Culinary Concepts, “The ‘Sober Curious’ movement is growing and will be a big thing in 2024. What started as ‘Dry January’ a few years ago is evolving into year-round reductions in alcohol consumption, especially among Millennial and Gen Z consumers.” Mocktails will no longer be a side offering at 2024 celebrations. This is the year for dedicated mocktail bars — and we’re all here for it.

Match Your Mocktail to Your Color Palette

We love how this stunning Pakistani dholki wedding celebration features a warm amber color palette — with mocktails from Hedrick’s Catering & Events to match. A monochromatic white bar allows both sips and florals to steal the spotlight. Check out the beautiful dance floor and backdrops that featured the same rich hues in delicate floral patterns.

Zero Proof Cocktails With Zest

2024 is a year where details count. Cocktail recipes are just as important as photo-worthy décor. According to Brian Flora of M Culinary Concepts, “This zero proof cocktail screams pool vibes without the sunburn (hangover). Inspired by a tropical margarita, this riff utilizes a zero proof tequila alternative combined with a fruity approach to enhance the ‘agave’ notes.” We recommend incorporating this signature cocktail into any event with bright hues, tropical flair, or disco beats.

16. Hand-Painted Cake Stands

In 2024, couples are looking to leave cookie-cutter designs and mass production behind. There’s renewed interest in customization, thoughtfulness, and intention. While we’ve seen cakes become more and more elaborate over the last few years, cake stands are finally getting their due. Dessert is nice, after all; but customization is even sweeter.

Lush Floral Wonderland

What better way to welcome a new addition to the family than with garden-themed Baby Sip and See? Event manager Jessie Khaira partnered with Lux Affairs Production Firm to curate this enchanting scene with jewel-toned velvets, suspended florals, and one-of-a-kind hand-painted cake stands. Make sure to check out how even the ghost chairs benefited from a customized touch.

17. Furniture as Art

Fringe isn’t the only celebratory element to get a futuristic touch. Event rentals and furnishings are embracing the bold hues and shapes of the modern art movement. Chairs, lighting fixtures, and tablescapes have become as integral as floral arrangements for bringing an aesthetic to life.

Casa De Perrin made sure that the rentals were on point with sleek heating lamps that doubled as disco décor. See how elongated disco balls turned a simple tablescape into a futuristic dreamscape.

18. Chic Table Lamp Centerpieces

Centerpieces are a staple of wedding and event décor. While florals will always have a place at the table, non-floral décor is only becoming more popular as the years go by. This year, lamplight is at the forefront of tablescape decorations. Get ready to explore one of our favorite 2024 trends with the flip of a switch.

19. Passed Fine China

Fine china elevates any table. When presented enmasse — like at a wedding or other celebration — it can really wow. Which is why we love that china patterns have hopped off tabletops and onto cocktail and dessert plates. Why reserve those gorgeous prints for a sit-down meal? Put them in guests’ hands from the beginning to the end of your event to create a chic mood throughout.

Guests enjoyed their slices on the same blue floral Savannah plates from Event Rents Colorado on which they ate their meals, lending cohesiveness to the whole affair. BBJ La Tavola set the tables with crisp white linen allowing the plates to wow.

20. Performers Intertwined in the Party

We’ve seen it thousands of times: a designated dance floor, a stage set above the crowd. But what if entertainment occurred wherever you happened to celebrate — be it while mingling over cocktails or enjoying a seated dinner? This year, performers are taking center stage…on miniature stages set throughout the celebration.

See how Constellation Culinary Group joined the immersive performance with pilot attire, as well.

21. Walks to Remember

Move your guests from the ceremony to the reception or from the reception to the afterparty — but do it in style. In the rich tradition of New Orleans’ Second Line — brass-heavy, ragtag parades that pick up people as they go — comes this trend we are calling “walks to remember.”

Trust us, your guests will not forget having your band or other performers lead them in a parade (that feels impromptu but was actually well-planned) from one place to another. It’s a joyful way to engage guests in what would otherwise be a simple saunter. Plus, jazz is having another moment.

Guests at this glamorous wedding at the iconic hotel, The Newbury Boston, were delighted to be escorted from the reception to the afterparty in a fun way. Partygoers at this Carrie Darling Events-planned wedding were wowed by every little detail, like the drawings of each guest and the super-fun beach ball wall photo spot. But they were especially engaged with the showgirls — donning red feather boas and headdresses — dancing them to the afterparty.

22. Save Paper (Programs That Double as Fans)

Eco-conscious will never mean boring. If anything, saving paper can lead to even greater creativity. Couples and corporate hosts alike will love these custom-made programs that double as fans for guest comfort. Work with your invitations and print company to design a motif that highlights your personal or company’s brand. Make sure to incorporate the print in everything from your invitations to dinner menus.

23. Experiential Favors

Forget the engraved frames and branded koozies. Instead, opt for a party favor that not only creates an experience, but leaves a lasting impression. We’re seeing more and more visionary event hosts offering long-lasting, meaningful take-home gifts that will remind guests of their good time for years to come.

Winery Wedding

With wine barrels as their nuptial arch and polaroid cameras galore, it’s no surprise that this creative couple hired a tattoo artist to work their wedding. We love the idea of getting a permanent reminder of a special occasion — and flash tattoos are a great way to do just that. Don’t miss seeing how they brought a cool vibe to an industrial setting.

24. Sophisticated Neon Tablescapes

When it comes to lighting, nothing is off the table. In addition to table lamps, expect to see neon centerpieces and table décor. No, we’re not talking about neon lights in bold bright colors; we mean cool, crisp tones that exude elegance and sophistication. The future is bright, indeed.

Forget Candlelight; Neon Lighting Creates an Intimate Mood

A ballroom as elegant as the one in Four Seasons Hotel Chicago calls for luxury. Of course, luxury doesn’t have to mean traditional. James Bond would certainly approve of this 007-inspired Bar Mitzvah party with neon centerpieces that evoked the famous franchise’s opening movie sequence. We are just as impressed with the starlit dance floor with riveting musical performances by Magen Boys Entertainment. With the right lighting, it’s easy to achieve a glamorous effect.

People Also Ask…

Where can I find a wedding or event planner?

1. Beachy Themes Catch a Wave

Our kids might not have hit the work scene yet, but that doesn’t mean they don’t know how to appreciate a beach vacation. This year, birthday bashes are indulging in sun, sand, and waves. This gender-neutral theme delights even without a body of water in sight. Check out how the following kids’ birthday parties recreate a beach vacation right at home.

Balloon artists are bringing this painting technique to life with creative 3D balloon installations. Fine art has never been more approachable — or adorable.

8. No Ideas Are Off the Table

10. Colorful Bubble Cakes

Ask any kid, and they’ll tell you: One of the best parts of a birthday party is the cake. Bakery and dessert companies only get more creative as the years go by. This year, that creativity is resulting in colorful cakes with bubble icing. The best part? You can match your cake to your balloon décor for a seamless aesthetic.

12. On-Theme Coffee Keeps Parents on Their A Game

The key to hosting a stress-free kid’s birthday party lies in two steps. First, hire a kid’s birthday party planner. Second, make sure there’s plenty of coffee on hand. We’re not talking about boring drip coffee. Adults deserve their “wow” moments too, so make sure there’s on-theme custom latte art. Your photographer (and taste buds) will thank us.

Pantone Gets Peachy in 2024 — And Your Events Should Too

Each year on a chilly December day, you’ll find PartySlate’s editorial team up early hitting refresh, refresh, refresh on our browsers. You see, we are eagerly awaiting Pantone’s prediction for the color that will define the coming year. It’s always worth the wait.

For 2024, the Pantone Color of the Year is Peach Fuzz. It’s a pastel hue that falls somewhere between blush and apricot, somewhere between daybreak and soft candlelight. It’s the color of your grandmother’s vintage lace and of a cocktail you might raise to toast at a breezy beachside cáfe. It honors the past and brings hope for the future, making it perfect for your most meaningful celebrations.

Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute, shares of their selection process, “The Pantone Color of the Year reflects what is taking place in our global culture at that moment in time…We discuss our color psychology and color trend research looking to connect the mood of the global zeitgeist with the corresponding color family. From there, we drill down further to identify the exact right shade.” Then the color-choosing team sets about naming the hue to conjure mood and emotion.

We happen to think that’s exactly what the best celebrations do — conjure mood and emotion. See real celebrations below that are rich in the peachy tone, and get inspired to plan your own peachy soirée.

How do I choose a color scheme for a party?

Your party colors will determine the tone and mood of your celebration, so it’s important to choose a color scheme that fits your vision. While an experienced event planner can successfully pair any color with any style, some colors works with best with certain party themes. For example, it’s far easier to create a playful vibe with a punchy peach hue than a sleek black and white color palette.

Luckily, finding the right colors for your fête doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Use PartySlate’s curated color guide to narrow down your color scheme by season, location, and more. You’ll also learn more about color theory and important tips on how to incorporate cultural significance into your party palette.

Break Out Your Neon & Spandex for These 80s Theme Party Ideas

There’s no shortage of visual inspiration when it comes to an 80s theme party. The decade has become one of the most popular and recognizable party themes we’ve seen. After all, who wouldn’t want to bring back the era’s vivid patterns, neon fashion, and over-teased hair? (For one night only, that is.)

A decade that brought us so many staples (hello: Air Jordans, Bruce Springsteen, and Pac Man) deserves an epic night of remembrance. In the words of Bowling for Soup, we’re still “preoccupied — with 1985,” and it’s time to bring it back to life.

So whether you’re looking to travel back for a nostalgic memory or a first time experience, we’re breaking down 19 of the best 80s theme party ideas we’ve seen on PartySlate. Grab your boombox, blast Bon Jovi, start scrolling (and enjoy the ride).

1. Add Big Balloon Backdrops (& Bigger Hair)

photographer: Dave Robbins Photography | planner: Little Miss Party | venue: INDUSTRIA

It’s time to flip your hair, whip out those shoulder pads, and gather your brightest accessories. That’s right, we’re taking you to the prom, circa 1980. Click into these party photos for the raddest décor (and outfit) inspiration, including old school photo ops and props, and bushels of bright balloons.

2. Let 80s Arcades Inspire Your Ice Ice Baby

photographer:  Janine Licare Photography | planner & design:  Kate Siegel Fine Events | floral: Loop Flowers & Event Arts | signage & installation:  Underwood Letterpress

This birthday bash paired some of our favorite 80s games with tinted pampas grass and boho California florals — as well as the chicest arcade we’ve ever seen. Our favorite part? The incredible attention to detail; including retro arcade lettering across napkins, ice cubes, and custom drink stirrers (all paying tribute to the 40th-birthday boy).

3. Pop Culture Onto Your 80s Theme Party Desserts

80'S THEMED BIRTHDAY PARTY
photographer: Show Ready Photo | planner:  All Set | rentals: Bright Event Rentals; Blueprint Studios | lighting: Got Light | cake: Pretty Please Bake Shop

These 80s theme party photos are about to spark some bright ideas. We’re obsessed with the event’s signature cocktails, which were named after classic 80s hits including “Hit Me With Your Best Shot” and “Bourbon Bohemian Rhapsody.” The celebration continued its tribute to 80s pop with poster-covered bars showcasing some of the era’s legendary artists.

4. Spark 80s Nostalgia From the Start

Pretty In Pink 50th Birthday
photographer: Cavin Elizabeth | event design: HauteFetes | invitations:  Whimsíque: Designer Invitations & Stationery

This party host handed out mixtapes before guests even arrived. We’re talking custom invitations that teased an unforgettable “pink 80s prom night” in retro-chic style. A tulle-wrapped birthday cake, hot pink satin table linen, and a tassel-filled balloon arch took older guests back to their high school dance (but this time, they didn’t have to spike the punch).

5. No Duh You Need an 80s Theme Party Bar

80s Theme Party Bar With PInk and Blue Lighting | PartySlate
photographer & videographer:  Hart Studios| planner & swag: M.Studio Events | production, décor & staging: Geo Events | venue: private club

We bet you never thought you’d see a Hamptons country club turned into a high school gym. Nonetheless, this birthday party did just that, taking guests back in time for yet another 80s-style prom. Cocktail tables made of VHS tapes, 80s slang swag, and a funky bar backdrop are just a few reasons this celebration is the perfect source of fresh 80s theme party inspiration.

6. Walk This Way (With Your Leg Warmers)

80s Themed New Years Even Party With Vibrant Blue Uplighting and Small Neon Cubed Stage | PartySlate
photographer: Mindful Photo | venue: MGM National Harbor DC | entertainment: EastCoast Entertainment; The Deloreans

Your favorite Halloween costume just turned into a party of its own. “Let’s Get Physical” on the dance floor with 80s workout-inspired dancers and matching neon platforms. We especially love the idea of ringing in a new year with décor from a past one — like this New Year’s Eve celebration did.

7. Solve Your Décor Dilemma With Rubik’s Cubes

photographer: Heather Kincaid | planner & design: JOWY Productions | floral & candles: CJ Matsumoto | venue: Smog Shoppe

If you don’t know where to start in your 80s theme party planning, Rubik’s Cubes are always a fun idea. From bar designs to dance floor patterns, dessert inspiration, and more, we’ve seen them brought to life in every which way. However, this birthday party brought back more than just a decade of games. A neon-striped DJ booth, dance floor, and floral arrangements helped the guest of honor ring in 80 right.

8. We Want to Dance With Somebody (Under a Slinky Ceiling)

Neon slinkies suspended above a dance floor
photographer: Jeremy Lawson Photography | planner:  LOLA Event Productions| décor: HMR Designs | venue: 19 East | lighting: Frost Chicago  | entertainment:  BeatMix Music

It’s true, slinkies originated well before the 1980s; however, they didn’t gain popularity until this beloved decade began to unfold. Thus, neon slinkies (with a side of disco balls) made for the perfect suspended dance floor décor at this 80s theme birthday party. We can just picture the neon toys bouncing above guests as they rocked out to U2.

9. Phone Home About This Tubular 80s Theme Party Décor

E.T.-inspired wall projections

It’s not everyday a tween Bat Mitzvah girl is keen on a retro party theme, and this event team loved every second of it. A kid-friendly version of the 80s included E.T.-inspired wall projections, Rubik’s Cube signage, and an old school MTV-inspired logo. Take one look at these party photos, and you’ll be trying to convince your little one that this theme is perfect for them, too.

10. Scrunchies are an 80s Girl’s Best Friend

AN 80S BIRTHDAY BASH

We love the vivid décor that comes with an 80s party. But in this case, we love the photo ops even more. Secure retro props for your guests to take on-theme photos, and encourage 80s theme party clothes in your dress code ( just like at this birthday bash). After all, is it really an 80s party if no one has a scrunchy in their hair?

11. Spike Your 80s Theme Party Drinks Neon

This cocktail party celebrated Pride month with an 80s theme. The celebration ensured each guest would experience 80s-inspired elements from start to finish, right down to the drinks. We know the decade after disco was all about color, and these beverages added just the right amount of on-theme detail.

Rustic Winter Wedding Centerpieces

Rustic weddings have gone from trending to a classic wedding style that’s always in vogue. Their laid-back elegance is perfect for the no-fuss couple. While rustic weddings are often associated with summer and autumn months, where couples can celebrate outdoors, winter weddings can also benefit from rustic vibes. Keep coziness at the forefront of your winter wedding with an inviting tablescape — and the right centerpieces.

This rustic wooden tablescape gets a modern upgrade with ghost chair seating, white ethereal drapery, and dark and moody centerpieces.

3. Clear Wedding Tent Ideas

A clear wedding tent is the perfect solution for couples who want to enjoy the outdoors — regardless of weather. Not only do clear tents offer a window to stars, they also beautifully reflect chandeliers and candlelight.

Much like a frame tent, transparent tents allow for open floor plans and unobstructed views. Wedding planners and design teams will love the freedom to bring your wedding vision to life — without the need to work around poles or other obstructions. A clear-top tent wedding, like a blank canvas, awaits your imagination.

The Creative Planners prove that a wedding tent can be as elegant as any hotel ballroom. Drapery lends softness to the refined lines of this transparent tent setup. Stemmed candle holders and bulbed candlelight add an extra layer of enchantment to the scene.

This ultra-romantic wedding, planned by Pop Parties, features a spacious clear tent by Sandone Productions and cascades of neutral ombré drapery. Elevated greenery and dreamy blooms by David Kimmel Design perfect the look.

White Tented Beach Wedding

Beachview Event Rentals and Design made this modern, transparent tent wedding an affair to remember. Partygoers were able to enjoy the stunning Georgia sky and sands from this luxurious transparent structure. Make sure to “head inside” and see how suspended white orchids garlands brought a contemporary vibe to this lavish setting.

This backyard tent wedding combined rustic elegance with ballroom-style glamour. Kehoe Designs gave this transparent tent a twist with natural wooden beams and brass chandeliers. We also love how colorful floral centerpieces added a whimsical touch to this elegant setting.

A wedding set in a historic conservatory is bound to be picturesque. Three premier rentals companies made this beautiful setting even dreamier with a clear-top tent and luxe rentals. Twinkling lights by Fantasy Sound Event Services and gorgeous florals brought the garden indoors. Best of all, open side panels gave guests the option of walking out beneath the stars.

4. Wedding Canopy Tents (and Pole Tent Weddings)

Imagine a beautiful tent on a sprawling lawn, and you will likely conjure up an image of a wedding canopy tent. These iconic tents capture the imagination with their soaring pitched roofs.

Sailcloth tents, like pole tents, are another popular option that captures natural lighting while adding a nautical element to your setting.

While a pole tent wedding comes with some limitations (such as the need for ropes, stakes, and center poles), a talented wedding planner and design team can help create a floor plan that optimizes such a space.

Keep reading to see how these design teams take advantage of all the bells and whistles that come with this photo-worthy style of tent.

5. Frame Tent Weddings

Unlike the canopy tent, frame tents are open structures. The lack of ropes and poles result in a more flexible floor plan — with the option for custom installations.

Wedding planners and design teams love a frame tent wedding for its limitless possibilities — especially when it comes to décor. Expect elaborate wedding tent drapery, wow-worthy lighting installations, and dazzling color combos.

By the way, did we mention the metal frame means a sturdier structure? That’s right. You can use a frame tent on grass, concrete, or anywhere in between.

TYGER Productions transformed this frame tent by PEAK Event Services into a jeweled dreamscape with vibrant blue uplighting, sputnik chandeliers, and a wall of illuminated hurricane glass. Suffice it to say, guests were happy to linger long after sunset.

6. Cabana Tent Weddings

A cabana tent, also known as a beach wedding tent, combines a wooden framework with elaborate drapery. Perfect for waterfront celebrations, these eye-catching structures offer a relaxed (yet romantic) vibe.

Use cabana tent wedding drapery to incorporate your wedding color palette. The overhead beams also create the perfect opportunity to feature wedding tent chandeliers or other unique lighting installations. Ask your wedding planner for more ideas, or check out PartySlate’s Wedding Idea Gallery for additional inspiration.

This all-white cabana tent creates a sense of intimacy — even as guests are separated by several table lengths. Valley & Company Events took advantage of the structural beams to illuminate the evening with glittering chandeliers. You see, cabana wedding tents aren’t just for tropical beaches. We love how this rustic-style cabana by Encore Events Rentals (with romantic pink drapery) creates a dreamy dining space in this mountainous setting. We especially adore how each cabana section boasts a different chandelier style.

How to make wedding place cards?

Elevate the look and feel of your wedding celebration by making sure each detail is perfectly curated. Of course, this includes wedding place cards. A top invitations and print company will ensure your seating chart or wedding place cards are beautiful and photo-worthy.

Make sure to also speak to your wedding planner about how your wedding seating chart or cards can reflect your wedding theme and style.

PartySlate is here to connect you with the best print teams, wedding planners, and other party vendors. Head to our curated directory to search for the best event professionals near you. Make sure to filter by pro category, location, and event type to yield the best search results.

How to address wedding place cards?

While etiquette varies across cultures and eras, you want to ensure your guests feel welcome. With that in mind, we recommend omitting words like “plus one” or “guest” on your wedding place cards. Whenever possible, try to include each guest’s name.

From there, options vary. More traditional approaches include using titles such as Ms., Dr., Mr., etc. For a modern approach, you can omit the titles and just use first and last names.

Additionally, you can list couples on one card or give each guest an individual escort card. The most important thing is to make your guests feel valued and part of the celebration.

Remember, your wedding planner is there to help you navigate these decisions. Make sure to speak to your planner on which style best suits your needs. For help finding a top wedding planner, head to PartySlate’s curated planner directory.

People Also Ask…

What factors go into choosing a sweet sixteen party theme?

“All themed parties begin with a conversation with the guest of honor. This talk allows me to learn more about the honoree and what they truly like,” says Christopher D. Graddick of CHRISTOPHER MARCS DESIGN

He adds, “Sometimes themes are inspired by digital inspiration and industry trends and not a true reflection of what the honoree likes—unfortunately.  Great events—themed or not—reflect the individuals being celebrated. I also believe the best planners/designers know how to exhaust the information from these talks to create a truly customized event beyond the overarching theme.”

Once you’ve decided on a sweet sixteen party theme, how do you bring that theme to life?

Graddick shares, “Actually, the true planning/designing does not begin until after the theme is chosen.  After selecting a theme, I choose the design elements including but not limited to event color(s), the motif, stationery and branding, seating, linens, lighting, rentals, florals, and food. Don’t forget the experts to capture the magic—the photographer and videographer.”

“Themed events give planners/designers a freedom that many formal events often do not consider.  In my experience, experimenting with unique color palettes, seating, lighting/effects, textured/printed linens, and activations are some of the design elements that contribute to memorable milestone events,” says Graddick.

How far in advance do you need to start planning a sweet sixteen party?

Luckily, Graddick tells us that it does not take a lot of time to plan a party, “but many of my clients begin planning their milestone events 6-12 months in advance.”

He adds, “I have discovered that this celebration is—often—one of the largest events that they have planned, so they prefer to begin early to ensure the planning process is not rushed; everything is covered; and take advantage of the time to cover the investments.”
