22 Kids’ Birthday Party Trends for 2022

Your kid’s birthday party only happens once a year. Sadly, if you were like many parents, you may have had to make the difficult decision to cancel last year’s celebration. Now, after so many months of social-distancing, celebrations have never felt more important. While the pandemic is far from over, there is finally a light on the horizon. Kids’ birthdays are back — in both new and creative ways.

Last year, we predicted kids’ birthday party trends would include individually-packaged meals, take-home desserts, and on-theme face masks. While some of these trends will inevitably continue, birthday vendors are dreaming up even bigger ways to celebrate your little one.

Get ready for sophisticated setups — inspired by some of the hottest wedding trends. You’ll also find unique tablescape ideas that might even convince your kid to sit down and eat a vegetable or two.

From wow-worthy décor to imaginative photo ops, these kids’ birthday party trends have us excited for 2022. Get ready for the best year yet — where birthday wishes really do come true.

Kids’ Birthday Party Themes for Outdoor Enthusiasts

We’ve all gained a greater appreciation for the great outdoors over the last couple of years. With on-and-off social-distancing mandates — where even holidays and major life milestones were often celebrated over Zoom — the outdoors has come to represent a place of freedom and connection. In fact, backyard birthdays and weddings have never been more popular.

Consequently, we’re not surprised that nature-themed kids’ parties are gaining traction. Plant, animal, mineral — you name it. The natural world is worth celebrating, along with your little one.

As it turns out, a slice of watermelon is all you need for the ultimate birthday inspiration. With a bright pink and green color palette, this kid’s birthday party wows with on-theme food, immersive activities, and plenty of photo ops. Discover everything from melon mojitos (for the adults, of course) to a hot pink bouncy house.

Animal sounds are some of the first “words” babies learn. It seems like kids never outgrow their love for animals, and with good reason. They make the best party themes, after all. This year we’re shining a spotlight on the small but mighty butterfly. We love how this birthday party soars to new heights with a pastel color palette and wings for all the younger guests.

Chairs That Make Kids Want to Sit Down

Parents know the difficulty of keeping little ones in their seats — especially at dinner time. Fear not. With creative seating arrangements, kids will be eager to settle into their chairs (and maybe even eat their vegetables).

After the birthday cake, party rentals are a number one priority for your kids’ birthday party. Make sure to check out PartySlate’s curated directory to find top local and national rental companies. It’s time to sit down and celebrate in style.

When Wedding Trends Invade Kids’ Birthday Parties

At PartySlate, we always have our eyes on the latest wedding trends. Over the last few years, some of our favorite trends have ranged from tie-dyed florals to ultra adorable mini charcuterie boards.

As Picasso famously said, “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” We 100% approve of kids’ parties taking their cues from some of the most glamorous wedding celebrations. See how wedding ideas are the gift that keeps on giving.

Is there anything more unique than teal palm leaves or cotton candy-hued foliage? Dyed floral centerpieces took over wedding centerpieces last year — and are now making their mark on the most photo-worthy kids’ tablescapes. Make sure to see how an overarching balloon installation kept the color theme going at this whimsical birthday celebration.

Pampas grass routinely made an appearance in some of PartySlate’s top events of the last few years. In fact, it seems like pampas grass will always be trending. Even the Death Star and planets like Tatooine can benefit from this ultra-chic foliage. We are obsessed with how Star Wars gets a new (and elevated look) with the help of pampas décor. The pandemic had caterers scrambling to rethink serving stations at weddings. Lo and behold, the mini charcuterie board was born. We hope this trend is here to say, and we are happy to see it appearing at kids’ birthday parties. After all, kids also deserve to indulge in the finer things in life — and stay safe while doing so. Click to see other personalized dining ideas like individually-served desserts. Talk about yum.

Lessons from the Pandemic

COVID-19 forced everyone to adapt, including event planners. With a combination of strategic planning and creative thinking, celebrations persevered — and were forever changed along the way. The pandemic led to new types of celebrations such as micro weddings and virtual events, as well as new ways of celebrating with social-distancing and testing/screening precautions.

While we are overjoyed that life is beginning to return to normal (at least the new normal), we are glad to see event planners continuing to stretch their imaginations. As far as we’re concerned, these pandemic party trends can stick around for another year or two.

We especially love how packaging became the perfect blank canvas for branding and party themes. These “tackle box” snack packs are just one of many picture-perfect details at this fishing-themed party. Discover everything from fishing bobber cake pops to “live bait” fruit cups.

Kids’ Birthday Desserts That Makes You Look Twice

Ask any chef. Food can rise to the levels of fine art. While molecular gastronomy has been reinventing restaurants (and even corporate events) for years, kids’ catering is finding its own ways to shine. Caterers are thinking outside the box (and the traditional birthday cake) with new presentations and flavors. Sometimes, wishes really do come true.

Kids’ Birthday Décor Goes Round and Round

We’ve said it before: Party vendors have been forced to think outside the box over the last couple years. Luckily for us, the sphere was born.

Spherical birthday party décor is transforming backyards and venues alike. More than just party decorations, circles and orbs are creating everything from the perfect photo op to immersive activities. We have to give a round of applause.

Photo Spots are Still Hot

Even the greatest kids’ birthday party must come to an end. Luckily, photographs last forever. In addition to hiring a skilled photographer to capture your little one’s big day, we suggest creating the perfect photo op. While your kids may not be on Instagram, they will certainly appreciate an opportunity to pose for the camera.

13 Styles to Consider for your Fall Wedding Bouquet

There’s always been a buzz around June weddings; but like the tortoise overtook the hare, October has been slowly and steadily rising to become the most popular wedding month. And September isn’t far behind. Sure, there are things that fall lacks — like spring’s sneeze-inducing pollen, summer’s hair-frizzing humidity, and winter’s toe-chilling temperatures — thankfully.

We think fall’s crisp weather and vivid color-scapes make it the perfect season for picturesque nuptials. In addition, there are many vibrant flowers that bloom in autumn. From a variety of richly-hued ranunculus and chrysanthemums to more neutral pampas grass, your fall wedding flowers will wow your friends and family.

When it comes to fall wedding bouquets, the options are both beautiful and endless. We’ve got autumn wedding bouquet ideas from real fall nuptials that will help narrow your choices. See 13 bouquets you’ll fall for.

11 South Asian Wedding Trends for 2022, From Leading Vendors

As the year draws to a close, PartySlate is already dreaming about next year’s South Asian wedding trends. While new event testing and screening services lead to safer celebrations, wedding vendors must continue to think strategically over the next year. Supply chain disruptions and uncertainty over new variants will force industry elites to get creative — with new, yet wow-worthy results.

South Asian weddings represent a diversity of cultures and traditions. As Denise Lillie Engagements, a San Francisco-based event planning, company reminds us, “It’s not a monolith.” Click here to explore their team’s interactive map and learn more about common wedding traditions by region and religion.

South Asian wedding planner Events by C tells us, “There is such a wide array of cultures within the South Asian community and each of them come with their own traditions.” But despite this rich diversity, all South Asian couples must navigate the wedding world post-COVID-19. We reached out to eight top South Asian wedding planners and vendors to learn their top predictions for South Asian wedding décor, entertainment, catering, and more.

Yanni Design Studio, a Chicago-based design and floral studio, tells us, “Couples have found innovative and meaningful ways to celebrate with weekday weddings, live streaming, and smaller guest counts.” Nahid’s Global Events, a San Diego-based event planning company, also tells us to expect more outdoor wedding venues as well as destination weddings.

From intimate backyard weddings to luxurious destination celebrations, discover the top South Asian wedding trends for 2022 from 8 top wedding vendors. Despite our changing times, you can still expect dazzling décor, meaningful rituals, and immersive entertainment — but with a modern twist.

1. Lower Guest Counts

Eventrics Indian Weddings, an Orlando-based wedding planner, expects to see a reduction in guest count over the coming year. According to Denise Lillie Engagements, “Many second-generational couples are less interested in a 700-person guest list.” Between that and the need to practice social distancing at times due to COVID-19, intimate South Asian weddings are becoming increasingly popular.

In fact, micro weddings are here to stay for couples across many different cultures. Smaller guest counts reduce the chance of a super spreader event. They also offer unique opportunities for personalized décor and more intimate moments.

Sukhadia Caterers, based in New Jersey, tells us offbeat locations are trending. Moreover, couples are incorporating the natural landscape into their outdoor events.

According to Nahid’s Global Events, destination weddings are also becoming increasingly popular. Denise Lillie Engagements tells us how destination weddings are great because they still allow for a multi-day event.

Sonal J. Shah Event Consultants, a New York event planner,  advises, “If you are going to make your guests travel, take them to a place they may not think of going on their own. We are talking 16 to 20 hour flights, but the journey is well worth it once the guests experience the location and resort.”

That’s not all. “Full buyout of resorts are huge right now,” Shah says. “It offers complete privacy. The guest interaction is only with each other, and it elevates the entire wedding experience.”

Yanni Design Studio agrees. “Couples are becoming very creative and innovative with ways of entertaining their guests. Jazz ensembles, harpists, circus acts, and vocalists all have become very popular in the last year.”

11. A Virtual Component

“Due to the pandemic and travel restrictions,” Yanni Design Studio tells us, “virtual elements are becoming a key part in weddings.” Many photographers and videographers now offer live streaming during the ceremony and reception.

Additionally, “Slideshows allow couples to share their love story via Zoom or other video chat platforms. Virtual guests can also be included in the fun by uploading photos and videos via a wedding hashtag.”

What are Some Common Elements Found Throughout South Asian Weddings?

“There is such a wide array of cultures within the South Asian community and each of them come with their own traditions,” Chandani Chandekar of Events by C shares. That being said, “An element that we have seen across many South Asian cultures is the baraat!” Chandani tell us. “Many of our Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, and even Christian weddings have started their wedding ceremony off with a baraat. The baraat is the groom’s procession signifying him traveling from his home to the bride’s home for the wedding. Back when marriages were arranged, and commonly took place within the same village, the groom and his family would actually dance their way to the bride’s home. In modern times, the groom’s side will dance around the venue’s parking lot and arrive at the main door.”

Chandekar continues, “Another element that we see in all South Asian cultures and religions is choreographed performances! The siblings, cousins, and friends of the couple work together for months to choreograph dances especially for the bride and groom. Many times the dances are to popular Bollywood songs, and sometimes the performances are more intricate skits which tell the couple’s story through song and dance. We’ve seen many talented family members and friends choreograph on their own, while others defer to a professional choreographer to team them the steps.”

11 Movies That Make the Best Kids Birthday Party Themes

There’s something about the pure energy of a kids movie that still has my heart at 26. While my friends anticipate the latest blockbuster action films and rom-coms, I’m always eager to see what creative genius Pixar will top themselves with next.

One of my all-time favorite movies is Inside Out. The movie takes viewers inside the head of an 11-year-old via personified emotions. Between the wild visuals and outrageous adventures, you’ll discover important life lessons for all ages. So while most kids’ movies are light-hearted, there’s a lot of hidden meaning behind your little one’s favorite film (or your favorite, I’m not judging).

All of this is to say: Kids movies make the absolute best birthday party themes. From being brave like Moana to finding unlikely friends like Woody and Buzz Lightyear, there’s no better way to celebrate a milestone than with inspiration from your favorite characters.

Minion-themed birthday cake
photographer: Charmaine Mallari Photography | design: French Accent Design | rentals: Creating a Scene Winnipeg | cake: Sugar and Blooms Cake

Winnipeg, Manitoba

Minions is probably one of the most adorable kids party themes on this list. The cheery color palette alone is reason to make this your movie party choice. We love a plot (and celebration) that encourages teamwork, eating bananas (hello, potassium), and staying curious.

Minions also tells us that it’s okay to make mistakes — just don’t let it be missing out on a creative party opportunity, like this one.

Playful Toy Story Themed 5th Birthday Celebration
photo courtesy of, planner & design: ChrisFête Events

Detroit, MI

I’ll be honest, I have a personal attachment to Toy Story. Kids around my age basically grew up with Andy, and when he left for college in Toy Story 3 we were leaving too (or weren’t far from it).

But there’s a lot more to work with here than a timeline. From heartwarming music including “You’ve Got a Friend in Me” to all the toys that came alive, the design, prop, and experiential element options are endless. You can even dress the part (I certainly did when I was little).

Magnificent Sing Themed 3rd Birthday Party in Boston, Massachusetts
photo courtesy of, planner & design: ChrisFête Events

Boston, MA

There’s so much to love about Sing, I won’t even attempt to fit it all into this paragraph (if you haven’t seen it, you should, immediately). The overall message is to believe in yourself.

When it comes to a Sing party, I’d suggest activities like kids karaoke, and a sing-along playlist. This birthday offers the perfect inspiration. Each small guest found colorful microphones at their kid-size stools, along with iced cookies representing the main characters.

Dumbo Carnival Celebration
photographer: Christy and Co | planner: One Inspired Party | décor & rentals: Bambini Soiree | balloons: Balloons by Luz Paz | graphic design & cake stand: Nicks and May | cakes: Divine Delicacies Cakes | sweets: Baked with Love, You can call me Sweetie | printing: Sebastian Barragan

Miami, FL

I’m sure you know the plot of Dumbo, but in case you don’t, it tells the tale of a circus elephant born with oversized ears. And you guessed it, what made Dumbo different also made him extremely talented and special.

So why choose an ordinary circus theme when you can give it a Dumbo twist like this 1st birthday? Our team is especially loving the marquee letters spelling out the birthday boy’s name and the life-like Dumbo cake.

Beauty and the Beast Inspired Party
photographer: Unique Design Studios | planner: Monica Pardo Events | design, floral & props: Bambini Soiree | venue: Coral Gables Woman’s Club | sweets: Catalina’s Bake Shop | cake: Moulin Rose Bakery | caterer: Dish Catering by Luis | hair station: Lovely Locks Parties | dj: Power Parties | production: Maxon Productions | entertainment: Bubbles Show; Black and Wine | vinyl wrapping: Wrapafloor | stationery: Love Paper Creations

Coral Gables, FL

The Beauty and the Beast storyline tells us that it’s what’s on the inside that counts — except when it comes to a Beauty and the Beast-themed party, that is.

This 6th birthday went all-in on décor with vibrant red rose centerpieces, intricately designed desserts, and a fairytale photo op. An iconic, yellow Belle outfit for the birthday girl or boy wouldn’t hurt either!

Frozen Themed Birthday Party
photo courtesy of, planner & design: Sugar Rose Events | rentals: SJB Events | balloons: Signature Creations

Dix Hills, NY

For all the parents with Capricorn, Aquarius, and Pisces kids, this is the best winter party inspiration. From “Let it Go” to “Do You Want to Build a Snowman,” consider yourself warned that the music will be stuck in your head for days to come.

Hire a balloon artist to create a winter white ceiling installation like this celebration, and have a rental company add white draping and some sparkly silver linen, and your little guests will be immediately transported to Arendelle.

Moana-themed birthday cake
photographer: Tatiana Teo Photography | planner: The Party Muse | floral: Barbara’s Flowers | cakes: Lulu’s Cake Boutique | calligraphy: Minted Feather | cups & favors: Noir Style

New York, NY

I won’t tell you how many times I’ve watched Moana, but I will tell you it would make the best kids party theme (and the details from this 3rd birthday prove it).

Moana is not your typical Disney princess, and for that, we love her even more. If your little one has a summer birthday, or you’re simply looking for a tropical feel, this movie puts an adventurous spin on a popular party style.

Vibrant and Virtual Trollz Theme Birthday Party in Miami, Florida
photographer: Bufotos | planner: The Treehouse Events | bespoke paperie: Lexi Kay Paperie | bon bon boxes & troll pods: Oh La La Party Paperie

Miami, FL

There’s never been a better time to emphasize the importance of finding the silver lining, and Trolls does that in a kid-friendly way. This virtual 4th birthday party offers inspiration to bring the movie to life (and it’s no coincidence that there’s silver tinsel wall linings).

When it comes to a Trolls party theme, bring on the color. From invitations to party favors, desserts and more, this movie will make for a memorable milestone, guaranteed.

Off to Neverland!
photo courtesy of, planner & décor: Simply Perfect Events | floral: Arthur Golabek | venue: Town stages new york | rentals & fabrications: Decco By Party Up Productions

New York, NY

According to Simply Perfect Events, all that was needed was “faith, trust, and pixie dust” to make this Peter Pan party soar. Taking guests to Neverland may seem like an obvious party theme, but the depth of detail and wide range of elements you can use makes each Peter Pan party totally unique.

The best part? This theme is totally transferable to adult parties — after all, we never need to grow out of such a classic.

Star Wars Themed 5th Birthday
photographer: Alyssa Hunter Photography | planner, design, balloons & rentals: Hello Pretty Events | floral: Daydream Studio LA | acrylic signage: Crafting Gems | cotton candy & shaved ice: The Jolly Sheep | live balloon art: BalloonWorkz | cake: KT Cakes Bakeshop | star wars characters: OC Characters IO | mobile zoo: Mobile Zoo of Southern California | rentals: Belle of the Ball Event Decor

Westlake Village, CA

Okay, Star Wars isn’t the most kid-friendly movie on the list, but it is PG — and for that reason I couldn’t leave it out.

This “trooper training” birthday optimized the theme for young ones with character-lined centerpieces, a galaxy-inspired balloon installation, and a Yoda cake topper (resist that, you will not). Animated chair backings, “choose wisely” dessert carts, and a costume station prove that every detail counts when it comes to making your theme party stand out.

People Also Ask…

How do you choose a good party theme?

There are a few things to consider when selecting your little one’s party theme. First, what are their interests and hobbies? There are plenty of movies that can align with your kids’ latest obsession. From Cars to Paw Patrol it’s easy to find characters that reflect something they love.

You can also consider the season. Finding Nemo and Surf’s Up make great summer party themes, while Frozen and Ice Age might suit winter birthdays better. If you need more ideas, you can filter real kids’ birthday parties on PartySlate by theme, season, style, and more.

What is a Micro Wedding — and Why They’re Here to Stay

“Micro wedding” is the new buzzword for couples looking to commit. While small weddings were always an option, they are officially a mainstay. COVID-19 has forced many couples to rethink their wedding plans. With travel restrictions and social distancing guidelines — not to mention, constantly-changing regulations — intimate weddings offer a safer way to celebrate.

Make no mistake, micro weddings are anything but the “lite” version of a grander celebration. Be prepared for unique venue spots, lavish décor, and personalized details. We sat down with the team at Jennifer Matteo Event Planning to learn more about this popular phenomenon. As it turns out, small weddings are the new big thing.

What is a Micro Wedding?

Intimate barn wedding with plum-colored linen and white seating | PartySlate
photographer: Heather Lauren Photography | planner: Jennifer Matteo Event Planning | floral: Victoria Blooms | venue: Mission Lago Estate | linen & chargers: BBJ Linen

While everyone agrees that micro weddings feature fewer guests than the average wedding, the actual guest count is up for debate. At PartySlate, we’ve heard of guest counts ranging from 10 to closer to 50.

According to Jennifer Matteo Event Planning, a micro wedding has 30 guests or fewer. “Once a reception starts including 50 people, it’s just a wedding,” the team jokes.

Dip too low in guest count and you might find yourself hosting a minomony (10 guests or fewer) or experiencing an elopement.

Whatever the size, micro weddings are certainly intimate celebrations. Their scaled-back guest counts allow for creative designs, personalized details, and a more meaningful experience. As we learned from Matteo’s team, small weddings can result in some truly spectacular moments.

How Do Micro Weddings Differ From Large-Scale Celebrations?

Tuscany-inspired wedding recessional of bride and groom | PartySlate
photographer: Jillian Margret Photography | planner: Jennifer Matteo Event Planning | floral: Victoria Blooms | venue: Esplanade Golf & Country Club

In many ways, micro weddings are similar to their larger counterparts. Matteo’s team uses the same timeline for planning any event, from mood board inspiration to vendor acquisition. Most likely, a couple will also use the same type of vendors: photographer, florist, caterer, etc. That being said, you can expect a greater emphasis on meaningful moments and personalized details.

More Intimate Moments

“Micro weddings are definitely more intimate for the guests as well as the couple,” Matteo’s team tells us. “We like to see everything personalized for guests.” This can include everything from inviting each guest to “speak” at the wedding or having some type of pre-wedding, immersive experience.

“We have had a lot of our couples, especially here in Sarasota, who want to do a pre-wedding activity like paddleboarding or a sunset cruise.” The team adds, “It gives guests more to talk about.”

A Sweet Serenade

Los Angeles, CA

Smaller guest lists require less time “working the room” or transitioning from ceremony to reception hour. Fill this extra time with meaningful moments that honor your love as a couple. We appreciate how this groom took a moment to serenade his bride during the cocktail hour. May we request an encore?

Elevated Details

Many couples who have been forced to narrow down their guest list are choosing to put a greater focus on wedding décor. Think about it: It’s easier to have 30 unique chargers or place settings than 150.

Hosts are also transforming lemons into lemonade — with picture-perfect results. One of  Matteo’s clients had to narrow down the original guest list due to the Delta variant. Because her cake was already ordered, “She decided to go with custom cake boxes, so now guests will have a plated slice of cake during the reception, as well as a slice of cake to take home with them.” As the team says, “People are getting really creative.”

What are the Benefits of Hosting a Micro Wedding?

photographer: Arianna J Photography | planner: Jennifer Matteo Event Planning | floral: Victoria Blooms | venue: Historic Spanish Pointe

Micro weddings can be more convenient for the couple and their guests. “For a micro wedding, we can usually keep all your guests in the same place, especially resort-wise,” Matteo’s team tells us. “Here in Sarasota we have a lot of super cute beach resorts. When we do a micro wedding, usually all of the guests can stay in that area or property, versus being at a bigger hotel.”

Couples can also get creative with their venue choice. “Especially with destination weddings, it’s easier to get a smaller guest count to your location.” Couples can also choose to host their celebration closer to home — or even at home. “We’ve transformed some beautiful backyards.” Matteo’s team even took advantage of an inground pool to create an acrylic, floating wedding aisle.

Wedding Budgets: What is Included in a Micro Wedding?

Micro wedding at home-like venue with decorated front steps and floral-covered bar panel | PartySlate
photographer: Ailyn La Torre Photography | planner: Jennifer Matteo Event Planning | floral: Ivy & Vine Floral Design | venue: The Orlo

Do micro weddings cost less than large-scale affairs? “It totally depends,” Matteo’s team tells us. “We can do a beautiful little ceremony on the beach with an arbor and small floral touches, which will be a large cost savings.”

Matteo’s team also explains, “With a smaller group of people, we can do a quick cocktail hour, which can shorten their time with a videographer or photographer, so that’s another way people can save money.”

Rehearsal dinners may also be replaced with going out for cocktails or a more casual meet and greet.

At the same time, many couples who have been forced to narrow down their guest list are choosing to put a greater focus on lavish décor or creative cuisine.

With a smaller guest count, couples can also reallocate their budget to immersive activities throughout the wedding weekend, such as sunset cruises or renting a fishing charter.

Work with your wedding planner to determine your priorities. While your guest list may be small, your wedding day is still a big event. Don’t be afraid to get creative. With a smaller guest list, anything is possible.

17 Fall Wedding Ideas That Blend Cozy With Classic

Is there any season more romantic than fall? By the middle of August, the PartySlate team is already dreaming of sweater weather, pumpkin spice lattes, and our favorite fall wedding ideas

June weddings have become iconic, but fall is still the most popular season to exchange vows. And with good reason. Fall weddings routinely win us over with their dramatic décors, cozy ambiances, and harvest-worthy cuisines.

As new autumn weddings appear in the Wedding Gallery, our team often erupts with exclamations like “Did you see that velvet tablescape!?” and “Those vibrant trees are the perfect wedding backdrop!”

Discover our favorite fall wedding ideas, both classic and trending. From fall-hued florals to apple cider cocktails, we’ve narrowed down the best autumn inspiration for a standout wedding. We can already feel the thrill of a chill (and romance) in the air.

Autumn days range from bright and sunny to crisp and chilly. Keep your celebration weatherproof with transparent tenting. We love how this clear tent gave guests a chance to admire the fall foliage at every turn. Click to see how this rustic celebration also incorporated bonfire seating and Scrabble board signage for an autumn-themed celebration.

How Geometric Wedding & Event Décor is Making Math Fun (Yes, Really)

The inner workings of the universe may always be a mystery. One popular theory posits that the world is actually made up of mathematical equations. At PartySlate, we suspect geometric wedding and event décor fuels the cosmos (or at least the latest trends).

Geometry is making its mark on weddings, corporate events, and milestone celebrations. Triangles, circles, diamonds — you name it — are all finding their way into mathematical-inspired event décor. From ceremonial archways to funky centerpiece additions, it’s time to indulge in the “theory of everything.”
